The document provides details on the plans and influences for a magazine mood board and final product. Key elements of the mood board include using bright colors, varied font sizes, appealing photos that grab attention, interesting patterns, and photos of unfamiliar environments. The mood board influences the final product's layout, focus on nature/UK locations, use of different photo techniques, and factual rather than misleading information. Influences noted are avoiding fake information, drawing on personal writing interests, learning from existing magazines like National Geographic, and the landscape photography of Thomas Heaton.
5. Mood Board
Bright color scheme
on the outside to
help the magazine
stand out
Range of different
font sizes to show the
importance of some
parts compared to
others e.g. masthead
is the most important
Have a picture that
looks appealing to
the audience,
matches the theme
and grabs the
audiences attention
but which also
matches the color
scheme
Have interesting and visually appealing
patterns so my magazine is more
appealing and different to competitors
Is a picture of an
environment that my
audience doesn't see
daily or may have not
seen at all. Increasing
the interest that they
have for my magazine
and helping to grab
their attention
6. Mood Board
Has got different
colored fonts to show
the importance of one
compared to the
other. This also makes
the writing bolder and
help to make the
masthead stand out
more to the public
walking by.
Colors that are often used in
modern day magazines that also
help to make each other more
vibrant and bolder.
The certain
photo helps to
make the
magazine seem a
lot more
detailed and in
depth. The
person in the
photo also helps
to make the
magazine more
breathtaking and
appealing to the
audience
because this
man gives the
audience a
better
understanding of
how tall the
trees really are.
(inspiration) My product will focus on
facts rather then twisting the words to sell
more of my product and cause panic
Will be talking mainly about
the UK however I will have
articles on places world wide.
Will focus on more
nature and the British
environment however
I will have some
city/town shots to
interest other parts of
my audience
7. Mood Board
Will focus on
more nature
and the British
environment
however I will
have some
city/town
shots to
interest other
parts of my
audience
However I will be trying to get shots of a range of different
locations throughout the UK to add more variety to my
magazine. For example one of the main reasons people
visit the UK is because of the structures such as the castles
and walls
I will use a range of different techniques and shots
when getting my photographs for my magazine such
as panoramic shots, long shots, long exposure shots
and possibly overviews. However my magazine will
focus mostly on Landscape photography
8. Mood Board Photos of the
environment that
have some sort of
weather e.g. fog,
clear sky's and
other effects such
as the sun setting
causing the
clouds to change
color as well as
entry shot photos
Collect shots from the
country side, coast and urban
environments to show all the
different types of
environments in the UK
9. Mood Board
Use fonts that are modern
and that suit certain
images. For example the
beach image has a thin
font to not block too much
of the image and the
rainforest image has font
that has a sort of fog effect
and is see through to
match the theme.
Use different effects on my font to
make my text stand out more or
more appealing. This can be done by
adding a shadow to the text however
I want to stick to quite a thin font to
match the modern theme that I’m
going for which can also been done
by adding certain shapes and
patterns to my font as well as my
background.
10. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
My mood board inspires my because it shows what I want to talk about in my product such as my own personal
opinion on locations to travel which I get to express in any way I want. It has also inspired me to focus more on
the photography aspect of my magazine because, photographs are a major part in magazine design especially
in travel magazines where the audience wants to see what place you’re talking about no matter what your text
to picture ratio is. My mood board has also inspired me to challenge myself and do different ideas I haven’t
done before, for example I will try to make certain effects in my magazine with the use of shapes either by
doing something 3D that matches the topic I’m talking about for the background or by using some sort of
interesting shapes round the border of my magazine to add more detail and to make my product stand
out/different to other competitors in the market. My mood board has inspired me to make a more factual and
truthful magazine instead of using clickbait and twisting peoples words to make my magazine more attractive. I
think this will make my audience attracted to my brand more because of the fact that they know it’s a
trustworthy brand that they can trust and helps them to make the right decision on where to go without them
needing to think if what my magazine states is true or not.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
My mood board has influenced the type of colour scheme I am going to use because at first I was going to stick
to a dark tone because I didn't think a lot of light colours worked well together until I found a picture on the
internet of 4 vibrant colours that worked well together and would help to make my magazine stand out while
also looking visually appealing so that my audience doesn't get put off of buying my product and so that they
don’t think my product looks unprofessional.
My mood board has also made me want to focus on making more of a modern looking magazine. I think this
will be a very good feature to focus on because it lets me be a lot more creative with my work by adding
features such as interesting patterns that help to add to the theme. However because this has influenced my
product to be more based off a modern magazine I will have to be carful with the amount of colour I use and
where I use it so that the modern theme isn’t ruined, this will be the case because many modern magazines
have vibrant colours but only use very few colours and keep the majority of their magazine reasonably bland.
11. How will your mood board influence your final product?
The main way that my product has influenced my final product is how I’m going to lay out my magazine. For
example I was going to have a much larger text ratio then picture ratio on every page/article but after looking at
existing products I have decided to have a larger text ratio then picture on some pages where there might be an
article about my personal opinion but then on other pages where there is an article talking about a specific
location or advertisement I will have a larger picture ratio to text ratio to help sell the location to the audience
by showing them what the place looks like.
One of the main things that I think will influence my final product is the time and the weather that might occur
when taking my photographs for my magazine because the time and weather can have such a large impact on
how the photos impact the audience looking at them. For example if I take a picture of the coast when the sun
is setting making the clouds change colour the reader will feel relaxed, calm and happy whereas if I take a
photo of an empty path in London where its raining and there are large grey clouds the reader will possibly feel
cold, lonely and sad. This means I will have to be careful when deciding what photographs I want and where in
my magazine. For example the London picture I talked about would suit an article that talks about the bad
features of London whereas the coast picture that I talked about would better suit an article talking about why
people should come to the UK or possibly be used as the magazines cover to attract people and get their
attention. This is means that in my final product I will aim to get shots of environments in the UK in weather
where it isn’t raining to try stick to the positive type of style I want in my magazine.
Finding images of magazine brands such as the national geographic and placing it on my mood board has also
influenced me to focus on more unusual topics that people haven’t really heard of or topics that are important
which more people should be aware of. This will require me to focus more on trying to find unusual topics
which will take longer then if I just collected information then the most popular places to go. However I feel like
in the end it will make my product more appealing to my target audience because not only will it be something
new but the magazine will have articles talking about a wide range of different topics suitable for a wide range
of people instead of just talking about the same activities in 10 different locations round the world.
Mood Board Analysis
12. How will your mood board influence your final product?
On my mood board I have also looked at how fonts are an important part of my magazine and how
articles, the cover and advertisements will all have different fonts. A great example of this is the fonts on
my cover because my masthead will be in the largest font because I want that to be the first thing the
audience sees when looking at my cover and so from a distance they can see that my product was made
by this certain brand possibly making them more likely to come look at my product or less likely
depending on how they feel about my brand. Then there will be my cover lines which won’t be larger
then the masthead but will still be bigger then other information on the cover because it is a very
important feature of the magazine and it’s main purpose is to get the audiences attention or tell the
audience about a certain topic that is inside the magazine using four or six words. For example the
magazine National Geographic (as seen on slide 15) has a cover line on their magazine which says “we
are not alone” with a picture of space as the cover making the audience start to think and get more
interested in the magazine before they even read it which is what I will try to do on the cover of mine to
make my product more enticing to read. Then there is the text that will be smaller then the masthead
and cover lines which you will only be able to read if you’ve already got the magazine in your hand. This
type of text will be used for subjects that are less important then the cover lines but will still be useful
information for the reader, telling them things like the price of the magazine, other interesting topics
and other parts of information that will be in the magazine.
Mood Board Analysis
13. Key Influences
• Fake Information
The fact a lot of magazine company's and just company’s of products in general twist words to
make something seem like its not and trick their audience in believing things that simply aren't true
makes me want to focus on making a truthful magazine that will have articles where I talk about
my personal opinion, other peoples opinions (that are word for word and not altered) as well as
information off the internet that has been checked to make sure it is not fake. I want to do this for
my product because I think that it will make my product more appealing to my audience by the fact
that they know they can trust the brand and when they see an interesting title on the magazine
they know its actually real and not think someone has twisted what happened to make it sound
more interesting then it really is. However this will mean that I will need to spend a lot more time
when getting information for my magazine that's from the internet because I will need to make
sure its factual, this could possibly effect the overall quality of my work because it will mean I have
lest time to design my product and the layout but will mean that my written work is of better
quality. This relates to my product because in many travel magazines the pictures they take of the
locations aren’t entirely true. For example this picture I have on my mood board (as seen below) is
a picture of an environment in the UK that only looks like that for a very small part of the day and
if you do get there at that time it might not even look like that. The
Clouds might not be that colour, there could be lots of tourists
there, there might be boats in the background etc. However in my
magazine I will have some shots that are more accurate to what
the environment actually looks like.
14. Key Influences
• Personal Interest
I have always had a personal interest in writing from a very young age. One of the reason why I
like writing so much is because of how It allows me to express my thoughts and how I feel about
certain topics that I am passionate about, I also think its one of the best ways to get your
thoughts across to other people allowing them to see the point you’re trying to get across. I think
this will help to influence my product because I am talking about travel and the local environment
which I am very interested in meaning that when I am writing about it I will have a lot to talk
about and I will find it much easier to talk about this subject in detail. Also because I am
interested in this topic that I am talking about and just my product in general my audience will be
able to tell throughout my writing that I have an interest by the way that I talk about my topic,
hopefully making my product more appealing and interesting to them because of how clear it is
that I’m passionate of what I’m doing and not just trying to sell the most copy's of my product.
15. Key Influences
• Existing product
National Geographic's magazine is one of the other things that has influenced
me to make this product. The main thing that influenced me was the fact that
they back everything up that they say with facts and don’t jump to any
conclusions without giving a valid reason which I think many magazines should
do but don’t. I also like how they always focus on important or interesting
topics that no other magazine company really talks about because it helps to
make their magazine more unique and different to other competitors. This has
made me want to do the same with my product, I want to focus on topics that
many people don’t really know about as well as backing up my points with key
information because I think this will overall make my product more attractive
to my audience and a better quality because doing this will allow me to add a
much wider range of information.
16. Key Influences
• Thomas Heaton
Another key influence for me to make this product is a landscape photographer called Thomas Heaton.
One of the main reasons for this is because he takes photographs using the same techniques that I
want to such as taking photographs that involve entry shots. I also especially like him because of how
much the weather impacts his photographs and how he uses the weather to make an already
incredible shot into an even more impressive one. I think this is a very important skill and will be very
important for me to try and use when making my product because I need to make sure my shots are
appealing to my audience and make them want to go to the location that I’m talking about. However I
will not do this for all my photographs because I still want to stick to my theme of being honest with
my audience when showing them locations.
