2. Attach the bag-valve mask to an oxygen supply if present.
3. Hold the mask over the face with your hand.
❖ Place your thumb over the mask near the nose (C)
And
❖ Support the jaw with the middle finger and ring fingers (E)
Ensuring a tight seal
4. Use your free hand to compress the bag.
5. Ventilate with bag at a rate of 10 compression per minute

Bag-Valve Mask (BMV)/ Ambu Bag Ventilation
3. A
Steps:
1. Identify the need for oropharyngeal airway
❖ If the airway is obstructed Or the patient is unconscious.
❖ BY LOOK – LISTEN – FEEL
2. Size the airway by measuring the distance
❖ FROM the angle of the mouth
❖ TO the angle of the jaw (mandible)
3. Insert the airway so that its concave side faces away from the tongue
4. Insert the airway into the mouth to approximately 1/3 of its length.
❖ Whilst gently pushing the airway further in
❖ Rotate it 180° and slide it in to full extent.
❖ Check for breathing by LOOK – LISTEN – FEEL
Oropharyngeal Airway Inserstion

4. Steps:
1. Ensure personal safety: Put on gloves, be careful with sharps.
2. Check the victim for a response by
❖ shaking both shoulders,
❖ Asking " Are you fine? انتكويس "
❖ OR shouting out his/ her name.
3. If the victim responds, leave in position and try to assess what is
wrong with him/ her.
-----------------------------------------------------------
4. If the victim does not respond, turn the victim on the back and call for
help.
5. Clear the airway.
6. Assess airway for obstruction. Maintain patent airway.
❖ If you are suspicious of cervical spine injury, use the " Jaw thrust "
maneuver.
❖ Otherwise, use " Head tilt- chin lift " maneuver or insertion of
oropharyngeal airway.
7. If trained, check for breathing and assess the carotid pulse at the
same time.
8. If Unconscious and there is no carotid pulse, no breathing, start
cardiopulmonary resuscitation ( CPR ) immediately.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Application of cardiac compression
1. Place your interlocked hands in the middle of the lower half of the
sternum.
2. Position yourself vertically above the victim's chest, and with your arm
straight depress the chest by 5-6 cm aiming for a rate of 100
compressions per minute.
3. After each compression release the pressure on the chest without
losing contact between your hands and the sternum.
4. Compression and release should take an equal amount of time,
compression / release ratio = 1 : 1
5. Give 30 chest compressions followed by 2 ventilations 6. When 2 or
more rescuers are available switch chest compressors every 2 minutes
or after about 5 cycles of compressions and ventilations at a ratio of
30 : 2 ) to prevent decreases in the quality of compressions.
Adult Basic Life Support
5. Ventilation : Start " Head tilt - Chin lift maneuver " and give rescue
breathes ( mouth to mouth )
1. Place your hand on his forehead and gently tilt his head back.
2. With your fingertips of the other hand, under the point of his chin, lift
the chin to open the airway, pinch the nose and ventilate. Use a
barrier to prevent close infection.
3. If 2 rescuers; secure the airway of the patient. Once the airway has
been secured, continue chest compressions uninterrupted at a rate of
100 compressions per minute and ventilate the lungs approximately
10 breaths per minute. Only stop compressions for defibrillation or
pulse checks.
6. Steps:
Reassure
A. IF victim can cough effectively encourage cough.
B. IF cough is ineffective
1. Call for help
2. Deliver five back blows between the person's shoulder blade with
the heel of your hand.
----------------------------------------------------------------
If not effective ( perform Heimlich maneuver )
1. Stand behind the choking person
2. Wrap your arms around the waist and bend the person forward
slightly
3. Grasp your fist with the other hand, press hard into the abdomen
with a quick upward thrust as if trying to lift the person up .
4. Alternate between five back blows and five abdominal thrust until
the blockage is dislodged.
Emergency care for Choking – Conscious victim
7. Steps:
1. IF THE PERSON BECOMES UNCONSCIOUS - call for help if not
already done
2. Give care for an unconscious choking adult beginning with looking
for an object in the mouth.
3. GIVE 2 RESCUE BREATHS:
❖ If the chest does not rise with the rescue breath, retilt the head and
give another rescue breath
4. GIVE 30 CHEST COMPRESSIONS
❖ Then look for the object,
❖ If not seen in the mouth, give 2 rescue breathes.
❖ If the chest still does not rise, give 30 chest compressions
5. Person must be on firm, flat surface. Remove CPR breathing
barrier when giving chest compressions
6. Look for and remove object if seen.
7. If the object is not seen, give 2 rescue breaths
8. IF BREATHS DO NOT MAKE THE CHEST RISE, repeat chest
compression, look for and remove object if seen, and rescue
breathing.
9. IF THE CHEST CLEARLY RISES - CHECK for breathing
10. Give CARE based on conditions found
11. Person must be on firm, flat surface. Remove CPR breathing
barrier when giving chest compressions.
