2. ADULTS
Before beginning CPR, check if the person is
conscious. If the person seems unconscious, ask if they
are okay loudly. If they don't respond, have someone
call 911 as you begin CPR. If you are alone, begin
CPR for one minute and then call 911. If an AED is
available, use one shock on the person and then begin
CPR like so in the following slide :)...
3. 1. Restore blood circulation!
● Put the person on their back and kneel beside their neck and shoulders. Place the
heel of one hand over the center of their chest between their nipples. Place your
other hand over the top of your first. Keeping your elbows straight, use your upper
body weight and compress the chest at least 2 inches. Push hard at a rate of 100
compressions a minute. If you aren't trained in CPR, perform until there are signs of
movement. If you ARE trained, continue by checking the airway.
2. Clear the airway
● If you are trained, open the persons airway by using the head-tilt, chin-life
maneuver. Put your palm of their forehead and gently tilt it back. With the other
hand, tilt the chin forward to open the airway. Check for normal breathing and look
for chest motion. Gasping is not normal breathing! If not, and if you are trained in
CPR, begin mouth-to-mouth breathing. If you believe the cause of this person is a
heart attack, skip mouth-to-mouth and continue chest compressions.
3. Breathe for the person!
● With their airway open, pinch the nostrils shut and cover their mouth with yours,
making a seal. Give the first one second rescue breath and watch to see if their chest
rises. If it does, give the second breath. If not, repeat the head-tilt, chin-lift
maneuver and give the second breath. Thirty chest compressions followed by two
breaths is considered one cycle.
4. (continuing step 3...)
● Resume chest compressions to restore circulation. If
the person is still not moving after five cycles and an
AED is around, apply it and follow directions. Give
one shock then resume CPR. Use pediatric pads, if
available, for children ages one through 8 years old.
DO NOT use an AED for babies younger than one.
If there is no AED, continue CPR until there are
signs of movement or until help has arrived!
5. CHILDREN
● CPR for a child is similar to that for an adult (slide
before) except if you are alone, perform five cycles
of compressions before calling for help. Also, you
only use one hand to perform heart compressions
and you breathe more gently. Use the same
compression-breath rate as for adults (30
compressions followed by two breaths, which equals
ONE CYCLE.) After five cycles of CPR and there is
still no response, apply an AED and follow the
prompts. Use pediatric pads if available... if not, use
adult pads! Continue until the child has moved or
help has arrived.
6. INFANTS
● Babies usually fall into cardiac arrests due to lack of
oxygen caused usually by drowning or choking.
● To begin, examine the situation. Touch the baby
(don't shake) and see if they response.
● If no response, follow the next slide's directions as
to how to proceed CPR...
● If you are the only rescuer, do CPR for about two
minutes before calling 911. If someone else is
available, have them call as you attend to the baby.
7. 1. Restore blood circulation
● Place the baby on their back on a flat surface. Under the baby's horizontal
nipple line, place two fingers of one hand in the center of the chest.
Compress the chest about 1.5 inches. Count aloud as you pump a fair
rhythym (100 compressions a minute.)
2. Clear their airway
● After 30 compressions, gently tip the baby's head back by lifting their chin
and pushing down on their forehead with the other hand. Check for
breathing.
3. Breath for the baby!
● Cover the baby's mouth and nose with your mouth. Using your cheeks, blow
2 gentle and slow puffs of air into their mouth. Watch to see if their chest
rises. If it does, give a second breath. If not, repeat the head-tilt step and give
the second breath. If the baby's chest still won't rise, make sure no foreign
material is in their mouth. If yes, sweep it out. If the airway seems blocked,
perform first aid for a choking baby. Give 2 breaths after every 30
compressions. Perform CPR for around 2 minutes before calling 911 and
continue CPR as you wait for medical help to arrive.
