Costus igneus, also known as the insulin plant, has leaves that are used as a dietary supplement to treat type 2 diabetes. The leaves contain corosolic acid, which helps regulate blood sugar levels by promoting insulin production and the transport of glucose into cells. Several studies on animal models of diabetes found that extracts of C. igneus leaves reduced blood glucose and increased insulin levels. While conventional diabetes medications have side effects, C. igneus appears to be a safer alternative based on traditional use and preliminary research. Further clinical trials are still needed to fully validate its anti-diabetic effects.

3. DIABETES MELLITUS
It is a chronic disease associated with abnormally high levels of the sugar
glucose in the blood.
It is caused by inherited and/or acquired deficiency in production of
insulin by the pancreas.
It is of three types:
Type 1 DM: insulin-dependent
Type 2 DM : non-insulin-dependent
Gestational DM: hyper glycemic with blood glucose occurring
during pregnancy
4. Diabetes in India
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research-Indian Diabetes
study (ICMR-INDIAB), a national diabetes study, India currently has 63
million people with diabetes.
India represents the world’s second largest diabetes population after
China.
This is set to increase to over 100 million by 2030.
The majority of people with diabetes (>90%) have Type 2 diabetes
(T2DM)
5. Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Non insulin dependent
Results from the body’s ineffective
use of insulin
Symptoms:
Constant hunger
Weight gain
Weakness and fatigue
Slow healing of cuts
6. Treatment of type 2 diabetes
Diet and exercise Conventional medicine
• Improve insulin availability
exogens insulin
sulfonylureas
meglitinide analogues
• Overcome insulin resistance
bigunanides
thiazolidinediones
glucsidase inhibitors
7. Side effects of conventional medicine
• Hypoglycemia
• Non specific side effects like
nausea
vomiting
flatulance
headache
weight gain
• Hypersensitivity
8. Introduction On Plant
Costus igneus a medicinal plant is a Magic Cure for type 2
Diabetes mellitus.
It is also known as insulin plant
Its leaves are used as a dietary supplement in the treatment of
diabetes mellitus type 2
12. Geographical Source
Costus igneus is native to Southeast Asia, especially on the Greater
Sunda Islands in Indonesia.
It is also found in India including west bengal
In southren India the plant already are used as a dietary
supplement for the treatment of diabetics.

14. Microscopic character
microscopic characters of leaves include
• epidermis with anomocytic stomata,
• mesophyll cells with calcium oxalate crystals
• fibres associated with parenchyma cells.
15. Chemical constituents
• The leaves mainly contained :
Corosolic acid Ascorbic acid
• Other components :
α-tocopherol β-carotene Flavonoids
17. Anti-diabetic Activity
Costus igneus is helpful to treat Type-2 diabetes
The leaf of insulin plant contain corosolic acid that effect on blood sugar level.
Corosolic acid work in metabolism of insulin from pancreas that reduces blood
sugar level by transporting glucose into cell and out of the blood stream.

20. Conclusion
This review supports :
The few conventional therapies available are either expensive or often
related with adverse effects.
Although medicinal plants provide better alternatives as they are
generally less-toxic and affordable.
So medicinal plant is better to use in the treatment than conventional
medicine.
The anti-diabetic effect of its leaves is currently been tested in diabetic
patients.
