Course Description:

This one day course introduces participants to the key concepts and helps them develop and

Course Outline:
• Define and explain dependence, independence, co-dependence, selfreliance, disempowerment, empowerment, social model of disability,
enablement
• Institutionalisation vs Personalisation; Identify the advantages and
disadvantages to staff and service users
• Person Centred Planning; What is it? Why is it important? What
difference will it make to the service user? Tools for PCP
• Person Centred Care; What is it? Why is it important? What difference
will it make to the service user? Application of PCC using case studies
• Enablement; What is it? Why is it important? What difference will it
make to the service user? How to agree SMART goals with the service
user; short term and long term; how to measure progress and evaluate
success against set goals
• Empowerment; What is it? Why is it important? What difference will it
make to the service user? Use of case studies to demonstrate how to
empower service users
• Participation; What is it? Why is it important? What difference does it
make to the service user? Effective vs tokenistic participation. Levels of
participation (the participation ladder). Tools for effective participation.
Applying the tools with individuals with LD, Dementia, Mental Health,
Issues and Disabilities
• Barriers to enablement, empowerment and participation and how to
overcome them; time, costs, ignorance, power and control
