• Kings Fund Project with Cancer Patients 
• Concerns about in-patient mental health care 
nationally 
• Betts ward is first in-patient mental health 
service to participate in Co-Design.
What Happens? 
• Staff Focus Group – identified questions the service user 
wished to ask: 
• What does a ‘good admission’ look like? 
• How can we manage conflict effectively? 
• How can we best apply ‘blanket rules’? 
• What makes a difference in first 24 hours of admission?
FILM 
Film – People with lived experience talking about 
their admission. 
Made and edited by ResearchNet

• Event - film played back to staff and those with 
lived experience at the next focus group. 
• Smaller focus groups - service staff and those 
with lived experience develop action plans.

  • 4. Background • Kings Fund Project with Cancer Patients • Concerns about in-patient mental health care nationally • Betts ward is first in-patient mental health service to participate in Co-Design.
  • 5. What Happens? • Staff Focus Group – identified questions the service user wished to ask: • What does a ‘good admission’ look like? • How can we manage conflict effectively? • How can we best apply ‘blanket rules’? • What makes a difference in first 24 hours of admission?
