Throughout our media product (the news bulletin), Jenna and I have consistently
attempted to conform to the typical conventions of a genuine broadcast- or at
least what we believe is our best interpretation of one. I hope that you have
identified our initial attempt of replicating a stereotypical bulletin aimed at our
target audience in the way in which we inserted a bed. In this case, we chose to
use a backing track that had an upbeat tempo, in order to represent a particular
social group; young people interested in receiving news in a quick and orderly
fashion in-between listening to the newest music. We have also followed the
conventions that I previously stipulated in an earlier post by introducing our
bulletin in a calm and professional manner. In addition to this, one of our most
commonly used conventions would be cue and clip- which we found added a
higher level of interest to our previously bland bulletin.
However, I feel in some cases we somewhat challenged the typical forms and
conventions of a typical media news bulletin. Rather than adapt a pre-
established bulletin structure, we diverted and decided to re-evaluate the order
of our stories based on what we believed would most attract and maintain the
captivation and interest of our target audience.
I have found that my initial research into the quintessential structure and recital
of news was extremely helpful and has taught me a valuable lesson: reading
news is a performance. There are rules to follow, and whether or not you stick
to them, you have got to make sure you do what is best for the audience- and I
believe Jenna and I have.
