An award-winning youth and community project in East Cowes is set to re-open in January, thanks to a
generous grant.
Community action IW will manage The pavilion, Vectis road, which has received a £20,000 windfall.
The money has come from developer contributions paid to the IW council which must be used to
benefit the community.
The pavilion won the prestigious Queen’s award for Voluntary service in 2010 but closed its doors
around 18 months ago because of a lack of funding.
When the building re-opens, it will include a community café and activities for the elderly, as well as
internet access and office space available for community groups to host their events and meetings.
There will be a youth team, who will work with and help youngsters in the area. Cllr Julia Baker-Smith
who assists Community Action in securing the grant. “Projects like these are immensely important –
they help prevent social isolation which has become a big problem.
My copy story
 An award-winning East Cowes youth club is set to re-open in January. The
pavilion- which won the Queen’s Award for voluntary service in twenty-ten- is set
to re-open following a twenty-thousand pound grant from the Isle of Wight
council.
Councilor Julia Baker-Smith (PRON Jew-lee-ah Bay-ker Smith) - who assisted
the grant, believes these projects are essential.
CUE AND CLIP:
“Projects like these are immensely important- they help prevent social isolation
which is a big problem”.
Why I made the copy story the way I did
 Jenna Paine and I, having analysed the original story in the Isle of Wight county press,
decided that the key points were:
 The Pavilion being a youth club.
 The date in which it is re-opening.
 The fact it won the Queen’s Award.
 The fact it was funded and the exact amount of the grant.
 And so I summarised these key points an order that I felt best conformed to the typical
conventions of a radio bulletin.
 We chose this clip because we felt it was the most emotive quotation within the story
and the person being interviewed has high status and is therefore a person of interest
concerning the bulletin.
