Fair Use: Incopyrightthe term fairuse meansthat whichallowsradio producers, andanyinvolved
inmusic, what theycan andcan’t do regardingcopyright. The certain rulesthattheyhave to follow,
so theycan fairlyuse the copyrightedmusic.Forexample if someone wishestouse the music, and
theyhave permissiontouse the musicbutonlywishtouse a small part of the musictheyare
allowedto, butif theydon’thave permissionanduse the music, that isn’tfairuse.Fairuse isthere
to make sure that the artist’smusicis usedfairlyontheirbehalf.

7 SecondRule: Radioadvertisersoftenuse the “7 secondrule”, whichmeansthat theycan include
any songtheywantto theirad as longas it playsfor7 secondsor less.Thisisinfact illegal;anysongs
that are broadcastedhave tobe coveredbycopyrightand the radioproducershave to have the
artist’spermissiontouse it.
Strategies: There isno waythat radioproducerscan use an artist’smusicwithouttheir permission,
eventhoughthe license feescanbe quite expensive, butthere are some waysthattheycan
minimize the costsof the license. The waytheycando thisis:
1. Composingtheirownmusicandthenhiringa musiciantoplayit
2. To purchase the copyrightto a song they wantto use and thenhave itperformedby
someone whoisn’tthe original artist.
