7. Rock Cut Caves / Rock Cut Architecture
It is believed that it was built by King Kharvela for the Jain ascetics. These caves depicts beautiful carvings, splendid
sculpture work and some of the very ancient inscriptions of ancient Odisha.

Udayagiri has 18 caves
Khandagiri has 15 caves
Udaygiri Caves:
ā¢ Hathigumpha : or the elephant cave as its known bears
the inscriptions of King Kharavela. The seventeen lines
mentions about his many conquests and his way of
governance.
ā¢ The Rani Gumpha : or the Queen cave ; is a double
storeyed structure with beautiful carvings. Exquisite
carvings apart, the cave is known for its acoustic
characteristics.
ā¢ The Ganesh Gumpha : the Ganesha Cave known for its
carvings of Jain teerthankarās and other sculptures. The
carving of Lord Ganesha and two elephants were added
much later.
ā¢ The VyagharaGumpha : or the Tiger cave is so called
because the entrance is shaped like the head of the
tiger and the door shaped like a tigerās throat.
11. ā¢ Barabhuji Gumpha features the twelve armed Sasana Deviās facing each
other along with Tirthankar sculptures.
ā¢ Trushula Gumpha ā One can find the twenty-four Jain Teerthankarās carved
on the walls of the cave. The sculpture of TirthankarRishab Dev stands out.
ā¢ Ambika Gumpha - The Yaksha and Yakshiniās of each Tirthankar is carved on
the walls of the cave.

Dates- 100- 1200 CE & 500- 1300 CE.

Ratnagiri / "hill of jewels"
ā¢ Dates-500 CE onwards, with the last work in 1300,
and the peak period of work done between about the
700- 1000 CE.
ā¢ The reign of the Gupta king Narasimha Baladitya in the
first half of the sixth century, and flourished until the
twelfth century.
ā¢ The main construction of the surviving part of
Monastery 1 was under the rule of the (mainly)
Buddhist Bhauma-Kara dynasty, whose capital was
nearby at Jajpur.
ā¢ Stone- Blue-green chlorite and local Khondalite, a
āgarniferous gneiss with plum-coloured overtonesā.
ā¢ "Post-Gupta" style, continuing the classic style
of Gupta art.
ā¢ (27) Bronze & Brass figures in excavations.

ā¢ Excs.-Diamond Triangle sites conducted in 1905 by M.M. Chakravarty in 1927 and
1928, R.P. Chanda, in 1937, protected monument by the central government, In 1977
excavations by the Utkal University, Detailed excavations by the ASI 1985 and 1991.
ā¢ Dates- Starting from the post Mauryan period (322ā185 BC) till 1300
CE.

Langudi / Pushpagiri
ā¢ Jajpur dist.,
ā¢ Excs.-1996-2006 Discovery of an inscriptions from the monastery
as puį¹£pa sabhar giriya, and identified as Pushpagiri. 1993,
Pradeep Mohanty published in the Bulletin of the Deccan College
Research Institute, In 1996, the Orissa Institute of Maritime and
South East Asia Studies and the Odisha state's archaeology
department started exploring the site, Between 1996 and 2006,
the Institute carried out excavations, In 2000 excavation by
Debraj Pradhan discovery of a large stupa, he believed the stupa
to have been erected by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka (304ā232
BCE): Although Xuanzang suggests that Odra had 10 stupas
erected by Ashoka, this is the only one to have been discovered
so far. B. N. Mukherjee of Calcutta University supported Pradhan
view. By 2007, 34 rock-cut stupas of various sizes had been
discovered on the northern part of the hill. In 2007, the ASI took
over the excavated site.
