4. Main Characters
 Winston: Outer Party
member. Works for Big
brother in the forgery
department. He seems like a
very sad man, so I
empathized with him
 Julia: Outer Party member:
Works in the fiction
department, Winston’s lover
 O’Brien: Inner Party
member: He has an air
of mysteriousness
about him, so I was
very intrigued by his
character. It was also
such a surprise to me
when he introduced
Winston and Julia to
the brotherhood.

5. Literary Devices
 Winston smokes victory
 Ministry of Peace-deals with
tobacco and drinks victory
gin. He doesn’t like the taste
too much, but it tames his
paranoia. His little vices are
a symbol of how unhappy he
is with his life
 Ministry of truth- deals with
propaganda and forging the
past.
 Ministry of Love- punishing
and torturing those who are
suspected
warfare.
 Ministry of Plenty- deals
with food and rationing
 It’s ironic how the ministries
are named according to their
opposites.

6. My Impressions
 I never read a book like
1984. The concept in itself
is incredibly interesting and
gives much food for thought.
Not only that, but the author
also tells the story with very
descriptive language and you
can submerge yourself in the
depth of the book. 5 Stars.
