3. COSTUMES AND PROPS
Typical Conventions in our OTS
• Suits
• Guns
• Whisky
• Cigarettes
Untypical conventions in our OTS
• Pocket - watches are a typically
English prop and film noir films
are typically set in America.
• Flat Caps – Also a prop which
has an English theme to it.
Often worn by hunters.
4. Location
We knew that we wanted a dark
and gloomy look for our OTS. My
house has old fashioned wood
furniture which we thought
would look quite authentic when
in black and white. I removed all
personal and modern items from
the room ready for filming. As
it’s a terries house we have ally's
around the side and back of the
building. I thought that this
would work well for the
shooting as when in black and
white can look isolated and
suspicious; which is perfect for a
murder scene.

5. Casting
My partner and I used friends with the
right look for the era that we were
aiming for. We felt that we should stick
with an all male cast when writing out
our story board. Film Noir as a genre is
very masculine and we wanted to
strongly highlight this. We worked
together on the selection of actors as
we thought it was important to make
the decision as partners rather than
independently planning and working. Ethan Rundle

6. Audio
Music
For the music I wanted to record a song that
was on vinyl on a turn table. I wanted to do this
because of the crackling sound before the and
during the record. I thought that it would add
an aged feel to the footage. At first I looked at
Arctic Monkeys cover of the Nick Cave song
‘Red Right Hand’ because the original came up
in research. I liked the loud bold sound in parts
but I felt that it was to close to my research
material. I then chose to test watching the
footage with a song called ‘Dogmeat’ by the
band Drenge. Its loud and masculine so I
thought that it suited the feel of the OTS well.
We used this as an alternative to the Jazz and
blues which is usually in film noir. It makes our
OTS more of a neo noir.

I was in charge of choosing and styling all of
the text for the OTS. For our ident I created
a mechanical sound to go with the cogs of
the animation which my partner created. It
reminded me slightly of the sound of a type
writer which is why I chose this style of
font.
I then chose a bold masculine font to use
for the actual titles of the OTS. I then
chose the placement of them within the
frames. This is more of a modern way of
putting titles and would not really be seen
in traditional film noir.
