How our indie film challenges conventions
1. In what ways does
your media product
use, develop or
challenge, forms
and conventions of
real media
products?
2. Genre⢠The genre of film we have made is predominately
indie.
⢠Examples of other indie films we looked at in the
process of designing and making the film include
Submarine (2010) and Donnie Darko (2001)
3. Camera
Submarine âWhite Liesâ
Compared to other indie films, such as the 2010 British indie film âSubmarineâ, we think
weâve used similar camera shots/angles. Weâve used some curious shots, such as the one
in Rosieâs bedroom, where we positioned the camera behind the bars in her bed, to give
an over-the-shoulder shot from the bedâs âshoulderâ. This fits the genre as indie films are
quite quirky and unusual, just like this film. Weâve used a lot of wide shots like Richard
Ayoade (director of âSubmarineâ) used in the film.
4. AudioWe have also used an original soundtrack in our film, which is a trait used in most
films, but weâve made our music quite unordinary and quirky, alike the music in an
indie film. For example, the music in Donnie Darko is bass-orientated and dark which
reflects the whole plot of the film (parallel non-diegetic sound is used throughout),
weâve made ours build up to intensity to reflect our plot, but used diegetic sound
through to a sound bridge to make the music connect with her life, as well as being
parallel to what is going on.
5. Mise En SceneWe have used a lot of mise-en-scene that you would find in an indie film; we used a
real life coffee shop to keep the plot looking realistic. Furthermore Rosieâs outfit is
very low key which reflects the deviance and secrecy of what she is about to do. In the
deleted scenes of inside the coffee shop we see the âvillainâ wearing dark clothes to
this places Rosie at the same level as the villain.
6. Editing
Jump cuts from our production, âWhite Liesâ
We have used continuous editing found in most films, but have used jump cuts
which are more likely to be found in indie films as they are not âHollywoodâ, the
technique is quite controversial and rarely used.
7. Unique Elements
Our production does have aspects of uniqueness in it; for example, we have used jump
cuts in the bedroom scene which are rarely used in films nowadays.
We also gained a blue tint on the bedroom scene which was unplanned but also quite
happily surprising and we think this adds to the melancholy of her life.
