Autobiography Of African Americans
Introduction
The Merriam Webster dictionary defines "African American," as an American who has African and
especially black African ancestry. Being born in the United States and being American I have always
been classified as African American, because my skin was dark, my hair was tightly coiled and
because my parents were black. As a black child growing up here believed I was African American
because my parent were African. I knew Africa from the Lion King and National Geography. I knew
of the music because it played on a loop in our Georgia home, when I was trying to watch Disney or
Nickelodeon. I knew of the food, because I was made to eat it instead of McDonalds. So to me,
Africa and Africans where distant, it belonged in the world of fairytales. ... Show more content on

She asked if the name Fa is popular in America, like the name Awa is in Gambia, I said no, she was
surprise that I did not know anyone with the same name as me. I explained to her that Fa was short
for Fatou. With this revelation, Awa jumped up and hugged me and said that I was Gambia like her,
just born in America. I was confused, I tried to explain that I was just American, and in America I
was African American because my parents are from Gambia but not me. She went quiet for a minute
and then she shook her head, and said that I did not understand, she asked if I spoke Wolof, I said
yes, she asked if I liked the game Acara, I said yes, she asked what my favorite food was, I answered
Benachin, and then she asked like Bisap (the hibiscus tea), I said yes. She conclude that since I
answered yes to all her questions then I am Gambian too. What she said may not have seem much at
the moment, but for the first time since arriving in Gambia, I felt like I belonged. From then on, the
term African American meant something completely different to me. I embraced it fully, because to
me it meant that I am African because I have lived and had significant life experiences in Africa. I
understand and embody many African values, as well as the American values that I was born with.

The Importance Of Prison Rights In South Africa
With due regard to the placement of prison across countries, it was found that majority of countries'
Ministry of Justice or the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Interior were responsible for prisons. In
one country both ministries were responsible while in two countries a special Ministry for Prisons
and Correctional Services had this responsibility. The relevance of this is the implications it has on
the protection of prisoners' rights. It is thought that these rights are better protected under the
Ministry of Justice. It was also found that while some of the countries had updated some of the
legislation dealing with prisons, 11 countries are still using legislation that dates back to the 1970s
as far back as the 1950s. This means that these countries are operating without the benefit of modern
penal practice requirements, and may not have included in their legislation guidelines such as the
Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners and other legal instruments, both universal
and regional. Other areas covered included number of staff proportional to number of prisoners and
this was found to be 1:3 or less in six countries, and 1: 15 or more in two countries, with most
countries averaging 1: 4–6 members of staff to prisoners. The imprisonment levels vary from
country to country but the prison population rate tends to be higher in southern African countries
and lowest in Central African and West Africa. The average population rate was found to be 119

Historical, Anthropological And Gender Perspective
"Every child has the right to education"; I am sure that at some point or the other, we have all heard
some variation of this very powerful statement. However, is every child given the right to
education? We do not have to look far to notice the gaps in education availability between the
developed and developing countries. I will be comparing and contrasting the educational system in
Britain to that of a third world country, The Gambia. I will explore the history of Western education
in The Gambia, and how this has played into Gambian perceptions of Western education. Because
this class is interdisciplinary, I will attempt to make my paper well rounded by explaining my points
from various perspectives including a historical, anthropological and gender perspective. After
giving general differences and similarities, I will then concentrate specifically on the relationship
between gender and education in both regions and how accessibility to education may differ on the
basis of gender.
The Republic of The Gambia (The Gambia), is a small country located in West Africa with a
population of about 1.9 million people (The World Bank). The capital city of The Gambia is Banjul
and although small, Gambia represents a very diverse culture of about 10 different ethnicities.
English is the language of instruction in schools and also in the legislature. Formally a British
colony, The Gambia gained its independence in 1965 and has since then only had two presidents.

Feminism : Women And Women
Feminism Mankind throughout the history has been cruel to women for far too long, women, for
example have been deprived off of participation in various activities in a mostly patriarchal societies
where in male members of the society have the final say pertaining to the issues affecting the society
there by women can only sit down and look. The book described the modern feminism as a product
of the enlightenment, and 18th century feminists argued that women were secluded from the public
realm, whereas they were well equipped to compete on equal terms with men. These idea in most of
the time has been interpreted as the idea behind the subjugation of women by men is just a so called
idea of womanhood that women are only supposed to be housekeepers, taking care of the domestic
routines that includes, the flowing: cooking, laundry, feeding the kids, make sure their assignments
are done, women also has to fold laundry and iron them all by herself as inferior beings to man. To
some feminist, these ideas were merely to dominate women and make them feel worthless when it
comes to education, politics, things that affects their own surroundings and things that matter the
most. These system of biasness against women, have been in practice for so long and still continue
to be a norm even in some democracies where certain individuals feel the need that they can control
or decide what their female spouses should do. Its worst in mostly undemocratic and overly

Secret Of The Wild Child Analysis
Secret of the Wild Child is a documentary about a real case that occurred in Los Angeles in the
1970s. A thirteen year old girl was discovered by a social worker to be locked in her room and
strapped to a potty chair, severely neglected. She had spent her whole childhood in solitary
confinement because her father believed that she was mentally retarded from birth. The teenage girl
was immediately taken to a hospital to be properly assessed and treated. Doctors and scientists
called her Genie, because much like genies spend most of their life in a lamp, this girl didn't emerge
into society until after childhood. Soon after discovering Genie, doctors learned that Genie had
suffered greatly from her isolation. Genie could not speak, walked as if she was crippled, and did
not understand basic human interactions such as handshakes or maintaining eye contact. Genie's
case gained attention from scientists and doctors all over the world, and soon she had some of the
best researchers with her in Los Angeles to help rehabilitate her, while also observing her. None of
the doctors could agree with how Genie should be treated, however, over the ... Show more content

When it comes to the political set up of the international organizations that positively and negatively

If Gambia failed to secure that assistance, it will further hurt its economy because the country was
running with deficit and the IMF described the then current economic state of the Gambia as

One of the major factors in a state's development is the natural resources which it possesses within
its shores. The Gambia possesses few natural resources and the infrastructure for processing these
resources is underdeveloped. One of the most abundant resources of the Gambia is the various types
of sand which it possesses. The quartz sand which lies on the beaches and bank of the Gambia River
is of a high quality and is perfect for the creation of glass. The government is currently attempting to
gain investors to buy the quartz sand which they possess. The Gambia also possesses heavy mineral
sand which contains metals such as titanium and zirconium which have not been exploited to a very
great degree but are thought to be found in quantities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the economies of these two countries have had a large impact on their levels of
development. The Gambia has an economy based primarily ecotourism now, but throughout most of
its recent history it has been dependent on agriculture and even now has around twenty percent of its
GDP being generated by agriculture. As agriculture does not generally produce a large amount of
wealth it does not give the average citizen wealth enough for investments, education, and healthcare
which promote development. Also, agriculture does not require a large amount of formal schooling
and, as such, it does not promote government investment in education. Ireland, on the other hand,
has an economy dependent on idea–based jobs which generally require a larger amount of
schooling, prompting more government investment in education which increases development. Also,
as the idea–based jobs which the Irish economy is founded on generates more wealth, it allows for
citizens of Ireland to spend money on items of personal welfare, increasing the citizens health,
education, and access to

Abolishing The Gambia, New Zealand And Singapore
Chapter 5: Abolishing the JCPC in The Gambia, New Zealand and Singapore
5.1: Introduction
Based on the importance of the role the judiciary plays in POGG, I theorize that states will choose a
final appellate court that is likely to uphold its policies when challenge. The quantitative analysis
presented in Chapter 4 provides evidence that across the all 28 states in the sample the
probabily.............. This chapter presents a closer look at three states that retained the JCPC at
independence and subsequently abolished the right of appeal. The goal is to increase our
understanding of the factors that influence the decision to abolish all appeals to the JCPC in The
Gambia, New Zealand and Singapore. Firstly, I argue that states are more likely to perceive a
disconnect with the JCPC based on their level of success before the JCPC in cases where the state is
a party to the proceedings. Secondly, cases where the state is the appellant may be particularly
salient. In these cases, the state has decided to use public resources to challenges the decision of a
lower domestic appeals court decision. This indicates that the state takes the challenge very
seriously and would like a final appellate court that is likely to uphold its policies. Finally, I argue
that change in the governing political coalition will influence the view of the court a partner. Seow
(1997) asserts that less democratic or more authoritarian states are likely to be more sensitive to
JCPC decisions that do not uphold the

American In Jail/Prison Case Study
This is an interesting question for me because I accompanied embassy officials who were assigned
to hold negotiations and conduct visitations of American in jail/prison when I was in the Marines
stationed at several embassies and consulates; I served in Central and South America, Africa, and
Eastern Europe.
I realize we are evaluating correction systems for this segment of class, but the real answer rests in
our diplomatic relationship, intent behind the crime, and what crime was committed in the country
in question. Countries with little or strained diplomatic relationships will be hard to secure a release
in, and countries with a strong foundation in place like Islamic Law will be difficult or impossible.

Effects Of The Atlantic Slave Trade
The Atlantic Slave trade was a trade of African people from Western Africa to the Americas. During
this time, the "European settled on the islands like Saint–Louis, Goree, Central May, or in the ports
that were built along the coast, so it was the defensive possibilities of the island that made Goree a
slave center, and its position along the way to the New World from Africa" (Street). "When the
Europe and the Indian populations in the Americas and the West Indies died out, the New World
looked at Africa since it was their last hope" (Street). The Portuguese would arrive and they would
start to come to the people and work something out as in giving them alcohol, wine, spices, guns,
etc. and the Africans didn't think anything of it, so they started collaborating with the Portuguese.
The Portuguese left out a few things and didn't tell the Africans that they were going to start to build
a slavery. The Political conditions that happened in the New World was they would help one's ability
to help capture and then sell them off to criminals or strangers. "The Economic stand point in West
Africa that made the Atlantic Slave trade possible was that large amount of land that was not being
used, it had very cheap labor for the enslaved Africans and, they had local plantation owners"
(Street). The production of peanuts increased dramatically in which the peasants and the slaves paid
the highest price for them. During the drought, they started to have food shortages which affected

Gambia and Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of...
As far as we can go back in history human rights have been violated, nonetheless many attempts
have been made to protect human rights. The first attempt was the signing of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights after World War II. The world agreeing to this declaration was a way
to ensure that the lives of so many people weren't to be lost again for unnecessary reasons. The main
purpose of this declaration is making sure that all humans have the right to freedom, justice, and
peace in the world. It also says that everyone has the right to nationality, religion, and his or her own
opinion. Unfortunately today in many countries human rights are still violated. One of the countries
that violates human rights is The Gambia and I will be focusing on Article 19 of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights.
Article 19 of the universal declaration of human rights states " Everyone has the right to freedom of
opinion and expression; this right includes the right to hold opinions without interference and to
seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."
"Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right. The full enjoyment of this right is central to
achieving individual freedoms and to developing democracy." However in The Gambia although the
constitution and law provide for freedom of speech and press, the government has restricted these
rights.
The Gambia one of Africa's smallest countries and unlike many of its West

Fostering Diversity On School Campuses
Diversity is how we are all different in our own unique way. The concept of diversity encompasses
acceptance and respect. It is about recognizing our individual differences, and working together to
forge a better future. Colleges should aim to establish a climate of diversity and inclusion on school
campuses, so that every student, regardless of background, race, religion or language feel safe and a
sense of belonging. Colleges with a diverse student body helps improve the academic performance
of students and better student collaboration. Queens fostering a diverse community of students, will

I realize that i had a lot to contribute to Queens to interest in fostering a diverse student body. My
diversity is not simply limited to my race, but rather my language, religion, origin and cultural
background. I am from a tiny west African country called The Gambia . Although English should be
the official language of The Gambia, Majority of the population cannot speak it. Our native
languages are the widely spoken languages. When I came to the US, I speak very little English,
people couldn't understand me when I speak. They would often tell me that you have a strong
African accent we don't understand anything that you saying. This makes me feel left out and lonely.
The only time I feel a sense of belonging is when I go to the park to play soccer, Normally before
we play, we divide the teams into two "4 v 4". All of my teammates used to be Hispanics and White,
I have never seen a black person of African playing soccer at the park. Most of my teammates don't
understand me when I speak, but that doesn't stop us from winning. We won most of the games. I
community to my team mates using sign languages usually with my hands. I observe their body
movements to effect my passes. I communicate with them without even talking, and all our other
differences fade away. After going to the park for so long and meeting with different teammates
every single day, I always find a way to move past what makes us different, finding that something
that makes us the same. Whether on the soccer field, in the classroom, on campus, in dorms , dining
halls or on the street. It is the only way to live peacefully and build a better future

Gambia American Influence
One cannot deny that history has a great impact on the development of nations. This can be due to
policies, markets, and infrastructure which are prompted by history which give the nation an edge in
development speed in the future. The Gambia's history is somewhat complex, and while this
complexity can make it difficult to track the course of development, it undoubtedly has had a huge
effect of the Gambia's development. The Gambia was ruled by many kingdoms throughout its
precolonial history, with none of them being strong enough to gain complete control. These
kingdoms often were split into ethnic groups such as the Fulani, Wolof, and Malinki. European
influence began in the late fifteenth century when the Portuguese came and established trading
posts. This is when the peanut, a major crop in the Gambia, was introduced. As these posts were
unproductive those who lived in the Gambia were essentially left alone until the nineteenth century
when the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First off, the fact that Ireland has had a long time being influenced by the English has helped them to
share in the benefits which England brought from its vast economy. The colonization of other
countries by England allowed for a amassing of wealth which the English used, partially at least, to
develop infrastructure in Ireland. The Gambia was only under control by the British for
approximately one hundred and fifty years, meaning that it was not influenced by England as much
as Ireland. When Ireland entered the European Union it had easy access to some of the largest
economies in the world and was able to draw in investors from those countries, bringing revenue
into the country. The Gambia never was able to become a member of an economic alliance as large
as the European Union, meaning that it could not receive foreign investments as readily as Ireland,

Summary Of The White Man's Burden
According to William Easterly, the accomplishments of planned development are not impressive. In
an overly simplified process, governments invest capital to provide aid to developing countries (in
this case food aid), it then does not yield a specific result or target, and the "aid" goes somewhere
unintended (Easterly, 2006). In The White Man's Burden, Easterly discusses the notion that aid
"aims to please the donor instead of their electorate, by focusing on the wrong projects, and project
impacts are often not measured scientifically" (Easterly, 2006). In other words, development aid
does more harm by fostering a dependency in recipient governments (Diriye, et al., 2014). For
developments sake, positive effects are tarnished by the politicization ... Show more content on

In The Gambia, the government received foreign aid to develop rice projects for the purpose to
increase food security from 1966 to 1984 (Carney, 2008). It is important to note that this period
from 1966 to 1984 is a period that evolved from the Second World War. As a result, the justification
for aid and development was to uplift nations from poverty. Furthermore, development was justified
as a moral obligation and as something that advances national interest (Eyoh, 2015). However,
development for the strict purpose of morality or poverty has unintended consequences. According
to Carney, the Gambian government utilized 25,000 hectares of land to facilitate food aid for rice
production. Today, only 10 percent of the initial irrigated land for food aid and food security
purposes remains in production by farmers (Carney, 2008). As these operations emerged, different
labour arrangements (human, mechanical and political) needed to develop in unison. Before the
processes were complete, changes in policy favoured the importation of rice instead of local
production (Carney,

Cohort Study Design
Which study design has been used for research?
The study I chose was a case–controlled study. This study was done on malaria. This study was
conducted in three different health facilities in West Gambia between October and December of
2012. There were 150 children, some with confirmed cases of malaria and others that were
confirmed to not have malaria.
What is your learning from the chosen article and its study design?
Malaria has to potential to effect nearly 3.5 billion people. There are many options for some
protection against contracting malaria such as mosquito nets and insecticide sprays, however,
because of poor living environments and even lack of education on how to protect themselves, the
spread of malaria continued.

The study can help show the frequency of symptoms within an area or amongst a certain
demographic
A case–control study has two different, yet similar groups. The first group is a control group in
which they are not infected with a disease and the second group has been infected with the group.
The actual participants have been chosen so that they are almost identical groups, the only exception
being who does and does not have the disease. Ages, residence and living conditions are all matched
between the two groups in order to be as accurate as possible with results. Thus comparing the two
groups and how the environment, treatments and other factors affect the participants.
What is essentially the main use or purpose of the cohort study design and case–control study
design?
The purpose of any study that is focused on disease and symptoms is to ultimately fine the root
cause and how to best treat and eventually eliminate the disease and the factors that cause it.
When it is best to use the cohort study design and when is it best to use the case–control study
design?
A cohort study should be use before the participant has the disease. This way they can watch a group
of people who may or may not have some of the symptoms and how they are affected and if they
contract the disease and what factors caused it. A case control study is best to watch the effects of
the environment or treatments on a group of people who already have a disease.

Gambian Political Regime Essay
The Gambian Political Regime Introduction This essay takes an in–depth analysis of the different
types of political regimes, and then zooms in on the regime type in the Gambia. It commences with
a definition of a political regime, classifying it into three broad categories, and identifies Gambia as
a hybrid regime based on these typologies. Based on this, a justification is provided for Gambia's
categorization as a hybrid regime, before concluding with ideas on the relationship between regime
type and development. Understanding the dynamics of any country; that is, its politics, development
history, and the future trajectory of its development is highly requisite on discerning the political
regime that persists. Political regimes are "the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Three reasons guide my characterization of Gambia as a hybrid regime: (a) influence of political
leaders in otherwise democratic institutions and freedoms; (b) monopolization of political power by
a single party for two decades; (c) and executive interference in judicial affairs. President Yahya
Jammeh's ruling party, the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), has been
in office since 1996 as the renamed armed forces' provisional council that took office after the 1994
coup which toppled the liberal democratic government that had been in power since independence.
This followed Gambia's promulgation of a constitution which provides for multi–party democracy
and other basic democratic, as well as fundamental human rights and freedoms Elections are held
every 5 years; hence in 1996; 2001; 2006; and 2011 the country held Presidential and Parliamentary
elections. The APRC has emerged victorious in all these elections. However, the free–ness and
fairness of these elections remains contested because of intimidation by ruling–party functionaries
and incumbency advantages the president and his party enjoy (Perfect 2010). The opposition is
sufficiently suppressed, through rare but unconcealed random

In a 6–point scale, the TE rated the project's outcome effectiveness as "Satisfactory". The TE only
briefly summarized the project results at the EOP (End of Project) without comparing them with
expected outcomes. In the same scale, this TER will rate the project's outcome as "Moderately
Satisfactory" based on the evidence presented by the Final PIR (PIR 2014), which shows that some
progress has been made for reaching all of the project targets, but majority of targets were not
achieved 100%. A comparison of the project's achievements against the targets of its indicators is
presented below: (PIR 2014, p.4–53)
The project's Immediate Objectives are:
(i) To conserve the biodiversity of endemic ruminant livestock and improve their productivity
(AfDB)
(ii) To establish effective models for community–based management of endemic ruminant livestock
and its habitats at project sites, and strengthen production, market, and policy environment in
support of theses breeds (GEF)
There are 7 indicators under the project immediate objectives. By the EOP all of the indicators
partly reached or were on the track for fully reaching their targets.
Indicator 1 was the levels of household food security as measured by a household dietary diversity
score (HDDS). The target was at least 20% increase by project end from baseline levels. The target
was 50% achieved. According to statistics available by the EOP: the level for Gambia declined
around 30%; the level for Mali increased 24.3%; the

Universalism Vs Particularism
In this case, I would explain to Issa the relationship we have with Jesus. It is a loving, caring,
committed relationship. It requires nurturing and time. Once we realize how much Jesus loves us,
we will value time spent with Him. We will yearn to be near Him and want our relationship to grow.
Universalism vs. Particularism Issa comes from a particularistic culture which is very different from
my culture. I do not like to barter when shopping. When in countries where that is the norm, I'd
rather not shop at all. I just want to know the price, and pay it. According to the website Access
Gambia, "The cost of things can vary greatly and the final price you pay may well depend on your
bargaining and haggling skills" (2009–2016). There was a time that Issa bought back some goods
after a trip to Gambia. As I asked her the price for a particular necklace, I got the impression that
depending on the person, the price varied. On the surface, it may seem difficult to explain the gospel
to someone from a particularistic culture, but it is not. Jesus expresses universalism in His love for
us. It does not matter who we are, what our family background is, where we are from, what our
occupation, or how much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Senegal is a country on the western most part of Africa, surrounded by Mauritania, Mali, Guinea
Bissau, and Guinea. It also surrounds the small country of Gambia. The capital of Senegal, Dakar, is
the most western part of the country and the continent. Being a sub–Saharan, western African
country, Senegal is very dry and flat, having sparsely vegetated grasslands and sand covered plains
without much in the way of hills or mountains. There are three main rivers in Senegal, the Gambia,
the Casamance, and the Senegal, all of which sustain many towns and cities on their banks.
There are five major ethnic groups in Senegal; the Wolof, the Pular, the Serer, the Diola, and the

It wasn't until the French settled in the 17th century, however, did western influence start affecting
the country. When the French took over Senegal, they changed the main crops grown by the
Senegalese to cash crops like peanuts and rice. The people of Senegal went from a simple bartering
system that was for the most part fair, to mercantilism serving the French empire. The French also
introduced more patriarchal practices by taking the land from the women and having the men work
it as indentured workers, paying them for only a small fraction. This caused a major shift in
economic dependence in families and set Senegal on a very patriarchal path. Women no longer
could own land and work it for themselves, and thus were forced to rely on the profits, now greatly
reduced, of their husbands. In addition to the new ways of money is made in a family, colonialism
introduced ideas about women's bodies and sexuality that created a tradition of racial manipulation.
Many Senegalese women have gone to such extremes, such as bleaching their skin, to achieve
lighter skin tones that they are doing serious damage to their bodies . An equal number of theses
women are also putting most of their extra money towards purchasing wigs to mimic western

How the atmosphere that surrounds us make us who we are? For us, this is the main theme in the
film. The story itself is about a kid, Lucas, who urges to be a man, but that urge ends up tricking him
since he hasn't the courage to become a man and involves himself with some characters that are the
predators of that jungle in the film. Not having that courage he doesn't know how to manage all that.
My inspirational film is 'A Prophet' by Jacques Audiard.
My inspirational film is also by Jacques Audiard, 'Rust and Bone'.
It came up from the eagerness of wanting to explore that space, those characters and the almost
animalistic atmosphere.
When I got in there I felt that everything was possible. There, everything is possible, and people can
really be whoever they want to be. That space ends up transforming us, and the characters, and
therefore it becomes also a character itself.

Early Portuguee Expedition
The document from Luis de Cadamosto detailed an early Portuguese expedition in 1455 to Gambia,
located on the coast of West Africa. Cadamosto was a chronicler of Portuguese decent who took part
in this expedition, and narrated the events that took place. The document entails that the Portuguese
did not quietly sail to Gambia, but rather they were met with resistance that resulted in a conflict
between the Portuguese and those encountered. However, this document does provide information
of early expeditions. In this short essay, I will discuss how this document provides insight into the
interactions between different sides of the Atlantic Oceans, as well as shedding light on the possible
motivations of early oversea expeditions and presence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Portuguese were one of the first to initiate the transatlantic slave trade, and once sugar would
arrive on the scene, by the 1570s most of the slave labour used Africans. Therefore, slavery could
very well be a reason for the conflict in Gambia. Cadamosto mentioned that that they had good
relations with those in the kingdom of Senegal, only for them to respond saying that those of
Senegal could not be anything but bad for being on good terms with the Portuguese after hearing the
type of trading they do. (p. 33) Africans did participate in selling other Africans into slavery, which
could mean that those in Senegal were selling Africans to the Portuguese, and the reason why they
seem to have had distaste for Senegal. Moreover, Cadamosto also added, "But they were certain that
we Christians eat human flesh and we buy blacks solely to eat them." (p. 33) He wrote that they
believed that bought Africans solely to eat them, but what is more important were that they bought
Africans. Cadamosto did not deny that they bought Africans, which goes back to the point that they
could have bought Africans from Senegal. For this reason, it could explain the hostility towards the
Portuguese. Consequently, the people of Gambia heard what the Portuguese were doing which led
them to believe the Portuguese would do the same to

Robert Hayden's Poem 'Middle Passage'
Robert Hayden's poem, "Middle Passage", illustrated the experiences of Black captives and of
sailsmen during the journey to America. Reading lines like, "the sweltering cattle stowed spoon–

the cabins" angered me. I believe the poem spoke to how whiteness blinded the captains from
recognizing black misery and the humanity of the captives. This is similar to silent, white majority
of America that cannot identify issues facing Black Americans such as: colorism, police brutality,
and economic inequality without stating a reason that reinforces stereotypes of Blacks as lazy and
ungrateful. I can recount the conversations had with students and faculty

The Causes And Effects Of British Imperialism In Africa
British Imperialism is a monstrous, militarized, and advanced system of oppression. British
imperialism in Africa destroyed indigenous peoples lives and land. Once the slave trade became
illegal, Britain's economy was in shambles. Therefore, Britain's imperialists went to Africa seeking
wealth from its raw materials. The British was able to overthrow an already weakened governments,
and put in place settler colonies. They installed authoritarian governments and exploited Africans by
forcing them to do strenuous labor for Britain's profit. British imperialism in Africa is important
today because it provides an answer as to why an entire continent is suffering for mass poverty,
famine , and underdevelopment.
One of Britain's major economic profits was the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The Slave Trade was
extremely profitable because humans were in high demand and their forced labor brought in even
more profits. "The British first became involved in the trade in the 16th century and became major
players by the 18th century." (Jones 1). Britain amassed large amounts of wealth due to the Slave
Trade and was a large exporter of slaves. This is also an indication that Britain is gaining experience
within the land and with indigenous peoples. "Throughout the Eighteenth Century, British ships
ended up carrying over half the slaves across the Atlantic" (Luscombe 1). Britain dominated other
countries when it came to exporting slaves. "...following the collapse of the profitability of the slave
trade, its abolition and suppression..." (Iweriebore 1). Once the Slave Trade was abolished, Britain's
economy was not thriving like once before. Which obviously caused strife within Britain. "The slave
trade era was followed by the era of "legitimate commerce," a period between about 1800 and 1870
during which African–European economic enterprises were forced to find other products to replace
illegal human cargoes" (Candice 1). This is important because it shows that Britain needed to find
another source of economic growth. Ultimately, this was the main motive for Britain to place
settler–colonies in Africa.
Britain was going through somewhat of an economic setback due to the abolishing of the Slave
Trade and needed a way to stay

Ndi. In Sharp Contrast To South Africa, Burundi Officially
NDI
In sharp contrast to South Africa, Burundi officially holds the ICC as a 'Western tool to target
African governments'. This allegation of institutional political bias is not a new one but has gained
ground in recent times with nine out of ten situations being currently investigated by the office of
the prosecutor being in Africa (Mali, Cote D' Ivoire, Central African Republic, Libya, Kenya,
Sudan, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo). Georgia is the only country outside Africa facing
such an investigation.
The ICC's inability to try heads of state of any of the P5 countries or even launch preliminary

and geopolitical prejudice in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since 1994, The Gambia has been under the rule of President Yahya Jammeh, who exercises full
control over the military and those critical of government policies have been at the receiving end of
state excesses. With its questionable human rights track record, including the crackdown on political
opponents, The Gambia sooner than later faced the prospect of emerging as a contender for an ICC
investigation (Joseph, 2016).
While efforts have been made to portray the withdrawal of South Africa, Burundi and The Gambia
from the ICC as a response to ingrained geopolitical prejudice against the African continent, a closer
examination reveals that domestic considerations, including the possibility of imminent prosecution,
play a key role in ICC pull–outs.
The African continent is not a monolithic entity with many different nations appreciating the role of
the ICC as a defender and a safeguard in the fight against impunity. Also, closer coordination with
the ICC is viewed as a desirable value to be pursued. However, the perception of a bias against
Africa is a strong one with robust justifications as well and the ball is in the ICC's court to weed out
any trace of geo–institutional prejudice which would be fatal in the struggle against global impunity
(Miyandazi et al 2016). RECOMMENDATIONS

against impunity in the world not only in

Gambia Chapter 2 Episode 1 Summary

the moment of conception, but days after our story can take the most unexpected turn.
Holly, Jessica, Ellie and Gorgie are the 1 in 64 million identical quads whose lives changed forever
when they were a clump of a few hundred cells. For reasons no–one can really explain the
connections binding their cells were mysteriously broken and four clumps of cells started to behave
independently from the rest. Against the odds these cells each went on to form four entirely separate

International Trade Theories, Trade, Cultural Diffusion,...
In this assignment, the author will analyze, and identify differences between the basic and base
concept of international trade theories. The author will examine and critically assess the concept of
international trade. This paper agrees with the economist that international trade is the
interdependence of nations in terms of trade, cultural diffusion, and economic interdependency.
International business trade theories are basically different theories with their concept of trade how
they explain international trade. The concept of majority of economist believe that, trade is about
exchanging goods and services between two people or countries within the world. People do trade
because they believe that, from the exchange of goods and service, both can benefit from each other
resources. They need the goods and services which they are exchanged. Though at the surface, this
may sound very simple, there is a great deal of theory, policy, and business strategy that constitutes
international trade. The author will talk about the different trade theories that have developed over
the past century and which are mine. Most applicable in today 's business world. In addition, the
author will explore the issues which impact international trade and how businesses and governments
use these issues to their respective benefits to promote their international trade.

how everyone should just get along, and how there is a God and a saviour watching over all of us.

Autobiography Of African Americans

  • 1. Autobiography Of African Americans Introduction The Merriam Webster dictionary defines "African American," as an American who has African and especially black African ancestry. Being born in the United States and being American I have always been classified as African American, because my skin was dark, my hair was tightly coiled and because my parents were black. As a black child growing up here believed I was African American because my parent were African. I knew Africa from the Lion King and National Geography. I knew of the music because it played on a loop in our Georgia home, when I was trying to watch Disney or Nickelodeon. I knew of the food, because I was made to eat it instead of McDonalds. So to me, Africa and Africans where distant, it belonged in the world of fairytales. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She asked if the name Fa is popular in America, like the name Awa is in Gambia, I said no, she was surprise that I did not know anyone with the same name as me. I explained to her that Fa was short for Fatou. With this revelation, Awa jumped up and hugged me and said that I was Gambia like her, just born in America. I was confused, I tried to explain that I was just American, and in America I was African American because my parents are from Gambia but not me. She went quiet for a minute and then she shook her head, and said that I did not understand, she asked if I spoke Wolof, I said yes, she asked if I liked the game Acara, I said yes, she asked what my favorite food was, I answered Benachin, and then she asked like Bisap (the hibiscus tea), I said yes. She conclude that since I answered yes to all her questions then I am Gambian too. What she said may not have seem much at the moment, but for the first time since arriving in Gambia, I felt like I belonged. From then on, the term African American meant something completely different to me. I embraced it fully, because to me it meant that I am African because I have lived and had significant life experiences in Africa. I understand and embody many African values, as well as the American values that I was born with. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Importance Of Prison Rights In South Africa With due regard to the placement of prison across countries, it was found that majority of countries' Ministry of Justice or the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Interior were responsible for prisons. In one country both ministries were responsible while in two countries a special Ministry for Prisons and Correctional Services had this responsibility. The relevance of this is the implications it has on the protection of prisoners' rights. It is thought that these rights are better protected under the Ministry of Justice. It was also found that while some of the countries had updated some of the legislation dealing with prisons, 11 countries are still using legislation that dates back to the 1970s as far back as the 1950s. This means that these countries are operating without the benefit of modern penal practice requirements, and may not have included in their legislation guidelines such as the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners and other legal instruments, both universal and regional. Other areas covered included number of staff proportional to number of prisoners and this was found to be 1:3 or less in six countries, and 1: 15 or more in two countries, with most countries averaging 1: 4–6 members of staff to prisoners. The imprisonment levels vary from country to country but the prison population rate tends to be higher in southern African countries and lowest in Central African and West Africa. The average population rate was found to be 119 prisoners ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Historical, Anthropological And Gender Perspective "Every child has the right to education"; I am sure that at some point or the other, we have all heard some variation of this very powerful statement. However, is every child given the right to education? We do not have to look far to notice the gaps in education availability between the developed and developing countries. I will be comparing and contrasting the educational system in Britain to that of a third world country, The Gambia. I will explore the history of Western education in The Gambia, and how this has played into Gambian perceptions of Western education. Because this class is interdisciplinary, I will attempt to make my paper well rounded by explaining my points from various perspectives including a historical, anthropological and gender perspective. After giving general differences and similarities, I will then concentrate specifically on the relationship between gender and education in both regions and how accessibility to education may differ on the basis of gender. The Republic of The Gambia (The Gambia), is a small country located in West Africa with a population of about 1.9 million people (The World Bank). The capital city of The Gambia is Banjul and although small, Gambia represents a very diverse culture of about 10 different ethnicities. English is the language of instruction in schools and also in the legislature. Formally a British colony, The Gambia gained its independence in 1965 and has since then only had two presidents. • 7. Feminism : Women And Women Feminism Mankind throughout the history has been cruel to women for far too long, women, for example have been deprived off of participation in various activities in a mostly patriarchal societies where in male members of the society have the final say pertaining to the issues affecting the society there by women can only sit down and look. The book described the modern feminism as a product of the enlightenment, and 18th century feminists argued that women were secluded from the public realm, whereas they were well equipped to compete on equal terms with men. These idea in most of the time has been interpreted as the idea behind the subjugation of women by men is just a so called idea of womanhood that women are only supposed to be housekeepers, taking care of the domestic routines that includes, the flowing: cooking, laundry, feeding the kids, make sure their assignments are done, women also has to fold laundry and iron them all by herself as inferior beings to man. To some feminist, these ideas were merely to dominate women and make them feel worthless when it comes to education, politics, things that affects their own surroundings and things that matter the most. These system of biasness against women, have been in practice for so long and still continue to be a norm even in some democracies where certain individuals feel the need that they can control or decide what their female spouses should do. • 9. Secret Of The Wild Child Analysis Secret of the Wild Child is a documentary about a real case that occurred in Los Angeles in the 1970s. A thirteen year old girl was discovered by a social worker to be locked in her room and strapped to a potty chair, severely neglected. She had spent her whole childhood in solitary confinement because her father believed that she was mentally retarded from birth. The teenage girl was immediately taken to a hospital to be properly assessed and treated. Doctors and scientists called her Genie, because much like genies spend most of their life in a lamp, this girl didn't emerge into society until after childhood. Soon after discovering Genie, doctors learned that Genie had suffered greatly from her isolation. Genie could not speak, walked as if she was crippled, and did not understand basic human interactions such as handshakes or maintaining eye contact. Genie's case gained attention from scientists and doctors all over the world, and soon she had some of the best researchers with her in Los Angeles to help rehabilitate her, while also observing her. None of the doctors could agree with how Genie should be treated, however, over the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their goal was to see just how human their chimp Lucy could become. When it comes to the political set up of the international organizations that positively and negatively affects poorer nations can be classified in realist's point of view as powerful nations lobbying the international organizations to pass their agenda that affects smaller countries in the interests of promoting national hegemonic power. As a results, of this, regardless of the debts accumulated by powerful international organization's veto power, they are still on top of the average poor nation because of its political hegemonic power and influence over International Organizations. • 13. Gambia Essay One of the major factors in a state's development is the natural resources which it possesses within its shores. The Gambia possesses few natural resources and the infrastructure for processing these resources is underdeveloped. One of the most abundant resources of the Gambia is the various types of sand which it possesses. The quartz sand which lies on the beaches and bank of the Gambia River is of a high quality and is perfect for the creation of glass. The government is currently attempting to gain investors to buy the quartz sand which they possess. The Gambia also possesses heavy mineral sand which contains metals such as titanium and zirconium which have not been exploited to a very great degree but are thought to be found in quantities ... The Gambia has an economy based primarily ecotourism now, but throughout most of its recent history it has been dependent on agriculture and even now has around twenty percent of its GDP being generated by agriculture. As agriculture does not generally produce a large amount of wealth it does not give the average citizen wealth enough for investments, education, and healthcare which promote development. Also, agriculture does not require a large amount of formal schooling and, as such, it does not promote government investment in education. Ireland, on the other hand, has an economy dependent on idea–based jobs which generally require a larger amount of schooling, prompting more government investment in education which increases development. Also, as the idea–based jobs which the Irish economy is founded on generates more wealth, it allows for citizens of Ireland to spend money on items of personal welfare, increasing the citizens health, education, and access to ... Abolishing The Gambia, New Zealand And Singapore Chapter 5: Abolishing the JCPC in The Gambia, New Zealand and Singapore 5.1: Introduction Based on the importance of the role the judiciary plays in POGG, I theorize that states will choose a final appellate court that is likely to uphold its policies when challenge. The quantitative analysis presented in Chapter 4 provides evidence that across the all 28 states in the sample the probabily.............. This chapter presents a closer look at three states that retained the JCPC at independence and subsequently abolished the right of appeal. The goal is to increase our understanding of the factors that influence the decision to abolish all appeals to the JCPC in The Gambia, New Zealand and Singapore. Firstly, I argue that states are more likely to perceive a disconnect with the JCPC based on their level of success before the JCPC in cases where the state is a party to the proceedings. Secondly, cases where the state is the appellant may be particularly salient. In these cases, the state has decided to use public resources to challenges the decision of a lower domestic appeals court decision. This indicates that the state takes the challenge very seriously and would like a final appellate court that is likely to uphold its policies. Finally, I argue that change in the governing political coalition will influence the view of the court a partner. Seow (1997) asserts that less democratic or more authoritarian states are likely to be more sensitive to JCPC decisions that do not uphold the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

American In Jail/Prison Case Study This is an interesting question for me because I accompanied embassy officials who were assigned to hold negotiations and conduct visitations of American in jail/prison when I was in the Marines stationed at several embassies and consulates; I served in Central and South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe. I realize we are evaluating correction systems for this segment of class, but the real answer rests in our diplomatic relationship, intent behind the crime, and what crime was committed in the country in question. Countries with little or strained diplomatic relationships will be hard to secure a release in, and countries with a strong foundation in place like Islamic Law will be difficult or impossible. • 19. Effects Of The Atlantic Slave Trade The Atlantic Slave trade was a trade of African people from Western Africa to the Americas. During this time, the "European settled on the islands like Saint–Louis, Goree, Central May, or in the ports that were built along the coast, so it was the defensive possibilities of the island that made Goree a slave center, and its position along the way to the New World from Africa" (Street). "When the Europe and the Indian populations in the Americas and the West Indies died out, the New World looked at Africa since it was their last hope" (Street). The Portuguese would arrive and they would start to come to the people and work something out as in giving them alcohol, wine, spices, guns, etc. and the Africans didn't think anything of it, so they started collaborating with the Portuguese. The Portuguese left out a few things and didn't tell the Africans that they were going to start to build a slavery. The Political conditions that happened in the New World was they would help one's ability to help capture and then sell them off to criminals or strangers. "The Economic stand point in West Africa that made the Atlantic Slave trade possible was that large amount of land that was not being used, it had very cheap labor for the enslaved Africans and, they had local plantation owners" (Street). • 21. Gambia and Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of... As far as we can go back in history human rights have been violated, nonetheless many attempts have been made to protect human rights. The first attempt was the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights after World War II. The world agreeing to this declaration was a way to ensure that the lives of so many people weren't to be lost again for unnecessary reasons. The main purpose of this declaration is making sure that all humans have the right to freedom, justice, and peace in the world. It also says that everyone has the right to nationality, religion, and his or her own opinion. Unfortunately today in many countries human rights are still violated. One of the countries that violates human rights is The Gambia and I will be focusing on Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 19 of the universal declaration of human rights states " Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes the right to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." "Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right. The full enjoyment of this right is central to achieving individual freedoms and to developing democracy." However in The Gambia although the constitution and law provide for freedom of speech and press, the government has restricted these rights. It is about recognizing our individual differences, and working together to forge a better future. Colleges should aim to establish a climate of diversity and inclusion on school campuses, so that every student, regardless of background, race, religion or language feel safe and a sense of belonging. Colleges with a diverse student body helps improve the academic performance of students and better student collaboration. I realize that i had a lot to contribute to Queens to interest in fostering a diverse student body. My diversity is not simply limited to my race, but rather my language, religion, origin and cultural background. I am from a tiny west African country called The Gambia . Although English should be the official language of The Gambia, Majority of the population cannot speak it. Our native languages are the widely spoken languages. When I came to the US, I speak very little English, people couldn't understand me when I speak. They would often tell me that you have a strong African accent we don't understand anything that you saying. This makes me feel left out and lonely. The only time I feel a sense of belonging is when I go to the park to play soccer, Normally before we play, we divide the teams into two "4 v 4". All of my teammates used to be Hispanics and White, I have never seen a black person of African playing soccer at the park. Most of my teammates don't understand me when I speak, but that doesn't stop us from winning. We won most of the games. I community to my team mates using sign languages usually with my hands. I observe their body movements to effect my passes. I communicate with them without even talking, and all our other differences fade away. After going to the park for so long and meeting with different teammates every single day, I always find a way to move past what makes us different, finding that something that makes us the same. • 27. Gambia American Influence One cannot deny that history has a great impact on the development of nations. This can be due to policies, markets, and infrastructure which are prompted by history which give the nation an edge in development speed in the future. The Gambia's history is somewhat complex, and while this complexity can make it difficult to track the course of development, it undoubtedly has had a huge effect of the Gambia's development. The Gambia was ruled by many kingdoms throughout its precolonial history, with none of them being strong enough to gain complete control. These kingdoms often were split into ethnic groups such as the Fulani, Wolof, and Malinki. European influence began in the late fifteenth century when the Portuguese came and established trading posts. This is when the peanut, a major crop in the Gambia, was introduced. The colonization of other countries by England allowed for a amassing of wealth which the English used, partially at least, to develop infrastructure in Ireland. The Gambia was only under control by the British for approximately one hundred and fifty years, meaning that it was not influenced by England as much as Ireland. When Ireland entered the European Union it had easy access to some of the largest economies in the world and was able to draw in investors from those countries, bringing revenue into the country. • 31. Summary Of The White Man's Burden According to William Easterly, the accomplishments of planned development are not impressive. In an overly simplified process, governments invest capital to provide aid to developing countries (in this case food aid), it then does not yield a specific result or target, and the "aid" goes somewhere unintended (Easterly, 2006). In The White Man's Burden, Easterly discusses the notion that aid "aims to please the donor instead of their electorate, by focusing on the wrong projects, and project impacts are often not measured scientifically" (Easterly, 2006). In other words, development aid does more harm by fostering a dependency in recipient governments (Diriye, et al., 2014). For developments sake, positive effects are tarnished by the politicization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Gambia, the government received foreign aid to develop rice projects for the purpose to increase food security from 1966 to 1984 (Carney, 2008). It is important to note that this period from 1966 to 1984 is a period that evolved from the Second World War. As a result, the justification for aid and development was to uplift nations from poverty. Furthermore, development was justified as a moral obligation and as something that advances national interest (Eyoh, 2015). However, development for the strict purpose of morality or poverty has unintended consequences. According to Carney, the Gambian government utilized 25,000 hectares of land to facilitate food aid for rice production. Today, only 10 percent of the initial irrigated land for food aid and food security purposes remains in production by farmers (Carney, 2008). As these operations emerged, different labour arrangements (human, mechanical and political) needed to develop in unison. Before the processes were complete, changes in policy favoured the importation of rice instead of local production (Carney, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Based on this, a justification is provided for Gambia's categorization as a hybrid regime, before concluding with ideas on the relationship between regime type and development. Once we realize how much Jesus loves us, we will value time spent with Him. We will yearn to be near Him and want our relationship to grow. Universalism vs. Particularism Issa comes from a particularistic culture which is very different from my culture. I do not like to barter when shopping. The French also introduced more patriarchal practices by taking the land from the women and having the men work it as indentured workers, paying them for only a small fraction. • 65. The Causes And Effects Of British Imperialism In Africa British Imperialism is a monstrous, militarized, and advanced system of oppression. British imperialism in Africa destroyed indigenous peoples lives and land. Once the slave trade became illegal, Britain's economy was in shambles. Therefore, Britain's imperialists went to Africa seeking wealth from its raw materials. The British was able to overthrow an already weakened governments, and put in place settler colonies. They installed authoritarian governments and exploited Africans by forcing them to do strenuous labor for Britain's profit. British imperialism in Africa is important today because it provides an answer as to why an entire continent is suffering for mass poverty, famine , and underdevelopment. One of Britain's major economic profits was the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The Slave Trade was extremely profitable because humans were in high demand and their forced labor brought in even more profits. "The British first became involved in the trade in the 16th century and became major players by the 18th century." (Jones 1). Britain amassed large amounts of wealth due to the Slave Trade and was a large exporter of slaves. This is also an indication that Britain is gaining experience within the land and with indigenous peoples. "Throughout the Eighteenth Century, British ships ended up carrying over half the slaves across the Atlantic" (Luscombe 1). Britain dominated other countries when it came to exporting slaves. "...following the collapse of the profitability of the slave trade, its abolition and suppression..." (Iweriebore 1). Once the Slave Trade was abolished, Britain's economy was not thriving like once before. Which obviously caused strife within Britain. "The slave trade era was followed by the era of "legitimate commerce," a period between about 1800 and 1870 during which African–European economic enterprises were forced to find other products to replace illegal human cargoes" (Candice 1). This is important because it shows that Britain needed to find another source of economic growth. Ultimately, this was the main motive for Britain to place settler–colonies in Africa. Britain was going through somewhat of an economic setback due to the abolishing of the Slave Trade and needed a way to stay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

RECOMMENDATIONS 1. The international criminal court needs to show that it is open and impartial in its role in the fight against impunity in the world not only in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
