Short Story: Tragic Hero
"Uncle Barnabas!" Tabbie cried, running up to a large man giving orders to the docking crew. The
man turned towards her voice and smiled when he saw who had called, "Ah hello, you must be
Tabitha Belcher aren't you?" Laurance frowned, "You haven't met each other yet?" "Ah, Laurance
Nye, I didn't know you'd be gracing my vessel this evening." Barnabas stated, shaking Laurence's
hand. "Neither did I," Laurance said, "but my friend Tabitha here told me you wanted to make her an
apprentice on your ship." Barnabas nodded, "Aye, that's right. While I've never met her in person
I've talked to her father quite a bit and he tells me of her magnificent engineering skills." He turned
his grin on her, "So what do ya say, ready Tabbie be a sailor?" ... Show more content on

"May we meet the head engineer?" "Course," Barnabas replied, pointing towards the ship's hull,
"He'll be down there. You'll know him when you meet his eye." Laurance frowned, he seemed to be
doing quite a bit of that today, "What's that supposed to mean?" Barnabas winked, "You'll know."
"Don't be such a grouch Lance." Tabbie tugged on his arm and descended down the stairs, "Let's go
meet my new teacher." The two headed down to the surprisingly large hull. Tabitha lead the way.
Choosing a seemingly random direction she advanced forward with excitement. "Do you even know
where we're going?" Laurance asked, glancing around suspiciously. "Of course," Tabbie huffed,
"I've studied the design of airships since I was little. I think I would know the way to the engine
room." She looked over her shoulder at him, "Shouldn't you know all this stuff 'Mister Owner?'"
Laurance gave an exaggerated snort, "Please, I'm so busy being important and rich that I couldn't
possibly be bothered with normal people

Essay on The Tragic Story of Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo's life was full of sad tragic events and political affairs. Hugo once said, "To die is
nothing; but it is terrible not to live." And living is exactly what Hugo accomplished. He wrote
numerous stories and essays, lived a vivacious love life and had heated opinions about the
government in France. In the end of it all though, Hugo was a great romantic author who still lives
on today in his works of literature. Before Victor Hugo there was Joseph Lēopold–Sigsbert Hugo
and Sophie Trēbuchet. Mr. Hugo was a soldier for Napoleon's army in France, while Sophie was an
orphan living with her aunt. Mr. Hugo believed himself to be a hero because he survived being shot
through the neck, thought this fact did not impress Sophie when they ... Show more content on

Hugo's boyhood was full of traveling and war. Though he was not like his other brothers who were
interested by playing war and strategy games; Hugo was more interested in drawing animals and
humans. At this age he wrote little plays and created the backdrops and stages for them. They boys
also had schooling in France, but it was incomplete due to the number of times they moved. In 1817,
Hugo received his first taste of fame at age 15 when he entered a poem contest at the Acadēmie
Française. No one could fathom that a boy of his young age could write as well as he did and for this
reason he did not win the grand prize but received a mention honorable. He was also fairly young
when he became secretly engaged to his childhood friend, Adèle Foucher, in 1819; she was only 15.
This young romance was soon spoiled though when Adēle's parents found Hugo's love letter and
forbade them to see each other. Hugo's young adulthood was not filled with happy times. In 1821
Sophie became ill with consumption, known today as tuberculosis. Sophie moved to Mezieris where
she became better but fell ill once again. Then in June1821, she died from tuberculosis after she fell
ill again. Hugo was shaken by his mother's death but his brother Eugéne was even more. Though
Hugo did realize he could not do what he wanted to do: marry Adēle. At last the long–awaited
marriage happened on October 12, 1822. Hugo was upset at his father for failing to attend to his

William Shakespeare 's Romeo And Juliet Essay
There is no questioning that William Shakespeare's plays are influential. They were written centuries
ago, yet are still enjoyed by people to this day, and hold a place in modern high school and
university curricula. However, as with many other literary works, some of Shakespeare's plays are
received better by audiences and readers than others. Romeo and Juliet, the tragic story of two "star–
cross'd lovers" (Shakespeare, 5) who pursue their love for each other despite the feud between their
families, is considered by some to be one of Shakespeare's greatest works; however, the question of
whether it is his greatest tragedy remains under dispute. This play is different from other
Shakespearean tragedies in that in several ways, it does not fit the traditional characteristics or
structure of a tragic work. It can be feasibly argued that this, as well as the fact that the main
characters are much younger than those in Shakespeare's other plays, takes away from the tragic
element. Through analyzing Romeo and Juliet, one is able to reasonably conclude that while it is
classified as a tragedy, it is not a very effective one. One of the unique things about Romeo and
Juliet is that the structure of the first three acts more closely follows that of a comedy, i.e. a non–
tragic play, than that of a tragedy. In a comedy, the protagonist must overcome obstacles in order to
solve a problem, usually with the help of another character. This is seen quite clearly in acts one to
three: Romeo

Othello : An Aristotelian Tragedy And Tragic Hero
Othello, an Aristotelian Tragedy and Tragic Hero When reading a story, specifically a tragedy, what
stands out? Tragedy often enables its audience to reflect on personal values that might be in conflict
with civil ideas, on the claims of minorities that it neglected or excluded from public life, on its on
irrational prejudices toward the foreign of the unknown (Kennedy & Gioia, 2103, p. 857). Readers
feel sympathy for the characters, especially the tragic hero. Othello, the Moor of Venice is a prime
example of a great tragic story which follows the example Aristotle brings to light in his Poetics
(guidelines to drama). The Aristotelian definition of a tragedy and a tragic hero have certain
requirements; these requirements are met in Othello, the Moor of Venice, as a story of imitation,
incorporating pity, fear, perpeteia, anagnorisis, and catharsis, Othello is also seen as an Aristotelian
tragic hero as someone that is good, appropriate, lifelike, of noble birth, is of high character, and
who has a tragic flaw which meets the Aristotelian definition. The requirements for a work in drama
to be considered an Aristotelian tragedy are explained in Aristotle's Poetics. These requirements
make it difficult to signify a drama as a tragedy. "Aristotle's Poetics is a powerful, insightful, and
informative document concerning the nature of art, but very few works have been written, Greek,
Elizabethan, or modern, that conform to is standards for achieving the essential nature

Is the story Daughters of the late Colonel more comic...
Is the story Daughters of the late Colonel more comic than tragic for the reader overall? Be sure to
comment on Mansfield's use of language. The story "Daughters of the late Colonel", written by
Katherine
Mansfield takes place during Victorian times, based around two sister's whose father had recently
died. Mansfield describes the struggles of these two women as they try to express their femininity
and overcome the barriers of etiquette and the presence of their father, whom they feared. The story
ends as the sisters Josephine and
Constantia attempt to break free of their suppressed world but fail to, thus ending the story in
tragedy. Despite this the path leading to the tragic ending is riddled in humorous moments.

Another section which is both humorous as well as pitiable at the same time can be seen during the
time when Nurse Andrews comes by to visit, but eats all their butter:
"Nurse Andrews was simply fearful about butter... She had that maddening habit of asking for just
an inch more bread to finish what she had on her plate, and then, at the last mouthful, absent–
mindedly– of course it wasn't absent–mindedly– taking another helping"
This entire section is written in Josephine's voice, and thus allows the reader to view her opinion on
Nurse Andrews. "fearful" is not very commonly used for such situations, and sounds amusing to the
reader.
This is also seen through the repetition of "absent–mindedly" as well as the use of dashes which
allows the reader to visualize Josephine snapping at the gesture. However, even though she is
pictured like this Josephine is unable to stop Nurse Andrews in real life. She merely "got very red
when this happened, and she fastened her small, bead–like eyes on the table cloth". This again
highlights the dismal state the women are in– though they are the masters of the house, a common
nurse is able to dominate them, while the sisters are too weak to do anything against her.
However, this comical moment also highlights a more serious, tragic point about the sisters. The
word "fearful" is a pun; it also highlights the fact that Josephine is fearful that Nurse Andrew will
take all their butter, as it is

Antigone Tragic Character Analysis
A tragic character is a character in a tragic play that goes through the three different stages of a
tragic character. The stages of a tragic character are hamartia, peripeteia, and anagnorisis. Hamartia
is the flaw in their personality that leads to their downfall. A flaw could often be, but not limited to
pride, ignorance, and selfishness. Peripeteia is the characters change in fortune also leading to their
downfall. This is the part in the play where the story "flips" to give the tragic character different
circumstances. These "flips" are mostly out of the control of the character and decided by gods or
other uncontrollable forces. Anagnorisis is the epiphany that the character has towards the end of the
tragedy. This is when the tragic character realizes that their tragic flaw has led to their downfall, and
their change in fortune cannot be avoided. I think that there are many characters in "Antigone" that
could fit the criteria of a tragic character, but there is only one character that fits the description of a
tragic character perfectly. Antigone is often perceived as the tragic character as the play is named
after her and she is the protagonist. She does possess some of the qualities of a tragic character, but
not all of them. Her hamartia, or tragic flaw is her loyalty to her family which causes her to rebel
against authority. But if you were to somehow ask Antigone if she would have been less loyal to her
family if the result would have been different, I almost guarantee that she wouldn't have changed a
thing. Her change in fortune could be when Creon decides to put her to death because of her actions.
This isn't really a change in fortune because she knew this would happen if she buried her brother. I
do not think Antigone ever went through the last stage of a tragic character. She never had a
realization of her mistake that led to her downfall. She was fine with taking the consequences of her
actions, and found no fault in her personality or decision. She might have ended the story with
suicide, but there was not a moment that she regret making the decisions that she did. Because of
this, I do not think Antigone is the tragic character in the play as one might argue. I think a character

Romeo And Juliet : A Tragic Love Story
I am going to tell you a story about a boy and a girl; this is a tragic love story, but not your typical
Romeo and Juliet. Around the world, there are six prime emotions: joy, sadness, anger, fear,
surprise, and discussed. Secondary emotions are mad up of two or more prime emotions. Take love
or instance, emotions you can use for love is joy and fear. When you are in love, you are full of joy,
but love can also be scary because you are putting yourself out and can be hurt. While I tell you this
story, I want you to think about the emotions that flow through it.
The love story starts with two high school students, who met through the sport they loved: track. He
was a junior Juliet's freshman year, and at the end of her freshman year, she met Romeo. The couple
went through their ups and downs, through the break ups and make ups, through the struggles of
high school, and more. Once college rolled around, Romeo left. After a long time, Romeo and Juliet
reunited, but death came knocking.
The couple were reunited, but for a short time. One a cool February night, tragedy strikes. Juliet was
laying in bed texting her Romeo while he was at his friend's house, Zachary, working on his red
1986 corvette. Her phone began to ring with Romeo's number on the screen; he normally calls her
when he is heading home. The phone call lasted for a few minutes, and the signal was disconnected.
"Sorry phone died," messaged Romeo.
The next morning, she awoke to no messages or miss calls saying he was home, so she messaged
Zachary to see if he knew when Romeo got home. Zachary informed her Romeo has died in a car
accident: his Corvette shattered when hitting a tree, but she was in denial and thought he was telling

The Tragic Hero In Shelly Miller's Story Of Paul
During the winter of 2014, Shelly Miller was noticing something wrong with her son, Paul. Paul a
16–year–old junior in high school that hasn't been eating nor has he said one word to any family
member. Shelly's son was a popular guy on Staten Island, known for his exceptional skills in the
sport of soccer and his fervent ways. But at times Paul's actions were ignoble that he needed to be
rectified various times by his parents and other teachers in his school. Shelly would always reiterate
to Paul saying, "friends will take you but they will never bring you back." Well in that case, it took
Paul multiple times to learn his lesson. The winter of 2014, every thing seemed to go left. Paul
couldn't fulfill his dream to become the next Cristiano Ronaldo of his generation; he dropped out of
high school; ran away from home various times all for one foolish reason and his parents getting
evicted from his house. He followed his friends to the point like mother always said where they
couldn't bring you back. Paul's perspicacity skills weren't as expert as they should be. In this case he
couldn't distinguish between the correct friends to chill with. So one day, Paul decided to try
something new for the first time. So Paul was dared to consume numerous amounts of alcohol and
then drive to his "friends" birthday party. So of course he did it, so he wouldn't be name called and

Oedipus the King, a Tragic Hero Essay
Oedipus, a tragic hero
Sophocles's Oedipus Rex is probably the most famous tragedy ever written. Sophocles's tragedy
represents a monumental theatrical and interpretative challenge. Oedipus Rex is the story of a King
of Thebes upon whom a hereditary curse is placed and who therefore has to suffer the tragic
consequences of fate (tragic flaws or hamartia). In the play, Oedipus is the tragic hero. Even though
fate victimizes Oedipus, he is a tragic figure since his own heroic qualities, his loyalty to Thebes,
and his fidelity to the truth ruin him.
In The Poetics, the greatest statement of classical dramatic theory, Aristotle cites Oedipus as the best
example of Greek tragedy. According to Aristotle, Oedipus is a tragic hero because ... Show more

As outlined in the proposal, Oedipus is a tragic hero even though he didn't die because of the facts
described by Aristotle satisfies the character of Oedipus. In this story the character's egotism and
self–centrism has caused him a different fate, drawing attention of the audiences on the issues that
the human behaviors directly affect the human emotions as Oedipus blinded his eyes by himself
after finding out the truth. Here the hunger for the truth overshadowed by his grandiosity as
explained by Miller has made Oedipus to find out what he hadn't expected. He was just willing to
help somebody but as it was overcame from his confidence and proud, the story is able to
manipulate the audience's feeling and make feel sorry for the character even though it is already
known to the audiences that Oedipus was wrong, as seen from his confident and proud actions.
While in Thelma and Louise, the feelings generated to the audience are different. Unlike Oedipus, in
Thelma and Louise the human feelings were not played ironically but instead were diverted from
characters actions from one wrong action to series of others. Oedipus ends in misery and sorrow of
his past but Thelma and Louise ends up surrounded by the results of their wrong activities, which
they tried to overcome by running away from it rather than facing it like Oedipus. At the end too,
both tragedy shows the different perspective of life. One is with full of pride and

Lack Of Privacy In Amanda Todd's Tragic Story
Amanda Todd's tragic story transpired over the span of three years, and it all started by sending one
picture over the internet. Several things can be attributed to the hidden cause of her death. One
reason could be that she was too young to have enough common sense to be trusted to be put on
online sites. Many children are exposed to the internet at a much younger age than needed or is
healthy. Another is the lack of security you have when on the internet. Most likely she did not
realize that once she sent that picture, all of her problems would start. This is sadly not the only case
of cyber bullying. Many of these cases end with death. This is another negative aspect of
technology: Lack of privacy. As Amanda's story shows, many people don't know that once
something is put online, it is online permanently and can be used against you by someone or
something.
Another area technology plays a major role in is education. Technology in education can be a very
useful thing. It gives students faster and easier access to the tools and ... Show more content on

come to a situation when the results can't come instantly. They may give up altogether because it
takes too long to get what they need. This teaches them undesirable life skills; it encourages them to
be lackadaisical. It could lead to problems in their future life. Because students have instant access
to many sites and articles on the internet, students are not given as much an incentive to remember
what they've learned. Because they can quickly look it up as soon as they forget it, and they know
this, they see little reason or need to retain their learning. However, to others, instant results are
beneficial in that each time they look it up, it becomes a little easier to remember because of

Achilles: a Tragic Hero Essay example
Achilles as Tragic Hero
In his classic work "Poetics" Aristotle provided a model of the tragic hero. According to Aristotle,
the tragic hero is more admirable than the average person. This results in the tragic hero being
admired by the audience. For the audience to accept a tragic ending as just, it is crucial that the
tragic hero be responsible for their undoing. At the same time though, they must remain admired and
respected. This is achieved by the tragic hero having a fatal flaw that leads to their undoing. One of
literature's examples of the tragic hero is Achilles from Homer's The Iliad. However, Achilles is
different from the classic tragic hero in one major way – his story does not end tragically. Unlike the

This illustrates that Achilles can be considered as being more admirable than the average person.
This is also expressed in the poem, such as where Apollo refers to Achilles saying, "Let that man
beware, or great and glorious as he is, / We mighty gods will wheel on him in anger – look, / He
outrages the senseless clay in all his fury!" (Homer, XXIV 58–60). This passage recognizes Achilles
as great and glorious.
This passage also mentions the fatal flaw, which is the second requirement of Aristotle's hero.
Achilles fatal flaw is his tendency to go to extremes out of anger. Apollo recognizes this where he
refers to Achilles' fury. This fatal flaw is also expressed in the opening lines of the poem, "Rage –
Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles, / murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans
countless losses" (Homer, I 1–2). The rage that is spoken of first causes Achilles to react and refuse
to join the battle. When Patroclos is killed, it then causes Achilles to react again, with his rage
driving him too far. This allows the audience to see that Achilles is a great man, while having a fatal
flaw that leads to his own undoing.
The final aspect of the tragic hero is that his life ends tragically because of his downfall. If Achilles
fit with this model perfectly, he would become aware of his excessive rage at the end of the poem.
However, while he did become a better person

"Paul's Case" is a short story by Willa Cather that was written in 1905. Paul is boy in high school
that has many behavior problems. He strives for attention so badly that he feels that he needs to
show out in order to receive the recognition that he wants, especially from his father. Willa Cather
uses symbolism in her short story to develop the tragic demise of Paul. The symbolism used in the
first paragraph is repeated throughout the story. The red carnation that Paul has placed in the
buttonhole symbolizes his unreal desire to become recognized. The carnation is very flamboyant and
is not appropriate attire for the discipline meeting that Paul is having with the principal of his school

The flowers in the story symbolize Paul's place in the dream. He sees himself as the final piece his
perfect life. When Paul comes arrives in the city, he spots that there are not any flowers in his room
and orders for someone to retrieve some. Paul places them in water, and then gets into a bath
himself. "When he was shown to his sitting–room on the eighth floor, he saw at a glance that was as
it should be; there was but one detail in his mental picture that the place did not realize, so he rang
for the bell boy and sent him down for flowers... When the flowers came, he put them hastily into
water, and then tumbled into a hot bath" (544–545). Paul feels like the flowers are needed to
complete the mental image he has of his perfect life. In the room, there were no flowers, showing
that Paul was not in the dream. His getting the flowers, symbolizes that he had finally placed
himself in the dream.
Towards the end of the story, Paul takes a walk in the park where he sees flowers blooming in a
glass case. This symbolizes that it is not possible for Paul's dream to be actuality , or at least under
his circumstances. "Here and there on the corners were stands, with whole flower gardens booming

of the play. For example, the misjudgment of his action to leave Medea and abandon his oath of
marriage to her resulted in a devastating sequence of events for Jason. Jason exhibits a role of
nobility, but it is his desire to secure that nobility by marrying King Creon's daughter and leaving
Medea that causes his suffering in the end. He was presented with the decision to stay with Medea
or pursue his want for prestige and power. In addition to the presence of a tragic hero, Medea reveals
tragic circumstances throughout by mentioning Jason and Medea's past filled with betrayal and the
murder of Medea's brother as well as the death of King Pelias. These tragic events continued with
Medea's successful murder of Glause and in turn King Creon, and it concluded with the murder of
her own sons. The many murders are irretrievable, another category that classifies this play as a
tragedy. Lastly, because Jason somewhat accepts responsibility of the tragic circumstances enforced

Tragic Story Of Romeo And Juliet
The most famous love/tragedy story of all time is most likely the story of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo
and Juliet are two characters written by William Shakespeare who are pulled through a tragedy that
ultimately unites their families in the end. Because of the feud their forbidden love is kept a secret.
Many people love the timeless tale of the great tragedy and often romanticise it to make it more like
a love story. Because of this many people see love like Romeo and Juliet's, secret, forbidden, and
passionate, and want something just like it. I disagree, I think that that kind of would never work in
the real world. For starters, what most people don't know is that the whole story of Romeo and Juliet
takes the time of four days. And the two lovers met, fell in love, and were married by the second
day. They met at the Capulets dance, and Romeo is only there to try and find a girl prettier than his
old girlfriend. Which makes their love look for lack of a better word, cheapened. Then when Juliet
goes home, Romeo follows her and sits outside her bedroom window and listens to her talking about
him. Then they talk, kiss a lot, Juliet proposes, and Romeo accepts. Then they go to the friar who
only marries them because he thinks that it will end the feud (which still happens anyway.) Their
love seems strong but also blinding. And in Act 3 scene 2 when Tybalt, Juliet's cousin dies, she only
cries because Romeo is banished. I think that their love would not work in our world

plight the Chinese origin American couple had to undergo that it is hard to contain tears of sadness.
The mental state of the distraught mother and her vegetative existence after her dissociation with her

the story; however the decisions are always good for them or for the society. In Oedipus Rex, the
protagonist Oedipus is depicted as a tragic hero because of his strength, nobility, and his
determination to find the murderer. In most tragic hero stories and plays, the tragic hero does

Jocasta tried to give up her son to die, she never made sure that h died. Moreover, even after her
husband was killed, she could have investigated what really happened, instead, she went ahead to

could have saved her life and become a tragic hero. Therefore, Jocasta cannot be considered as a

Is Willy Loman A Tragic Hero
"Willy was a salesman...He's a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine"
("Death line 19). Anyone can agree that Willy Loman was a salesman that desired the American
dream in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. However, it is debated whether Willy may be
considered a tragic hero or not. The controversial debate is centered around Aristotle's definition,
Arthur Miller's Essay–"Tragedy and the Common Man," and analysis of other tragedies. Both
interpretations of a tragic hero include characteristics, such as, having a tragic flaw, suffering from
the tragic flaw, and producing a catharsis in the audience. The two interpretations begin to contradict
each other when Aristotle says the tragic hero must be of noble stature, while Arthur Miller believes
a common man can also be tragic. Despite these contradictions, Willy Loman can be perceived as a
tragic hero because he is noble in his own way, he has a tragic flaw, and the audience has a tragic
response.
Have you ever hear anyone ever say "You are different in your own way"? This quote means each
person is different and has different qualities that make them unique. Willy is noble in his own way,
meaning he may not be exactly like other tragic heroes, but he still has the qualities to let him be
considered a tragic hero. Aristotle, the first critic of tragedy, believed a tragedy must be serious. This
meant characters needed to be of an elevated status. Since a tragedy involves the fall of a

A Short Story : The Tragic Story Of Wilson's Life
Research has said that on average, most Americans will experience some sort of tragic incident in
their lifetime. Very rarely does a person or family experience more than one in a single day, but it is
not unheard of. This specific tragedy took place in a small town in Colorado called Peyton. It was
Wednesday, October 7, 2009. After school, two children ran up the .25–mile–long driveway to their
house. It was an older brother and younger sister. Their cousin would've usually been with them, but
she was at the school still. While the little girl was inside eating lunch, her brother bolted into the
living room after being outside. "The garage is on fire," he shouted, "you need to come quick!" The
little girl was used to her brother lying to her. He did it all the time. Never had he tried this one
before. She was impressed at how realistic he made it. There was no way she was going to believe
him. He left to go back outside, but left the door open. The house began to fill with smoke, and she
finally realized that maybe her brother wasn't lying. She went outside, and couldn't believe her eyes.
There was an enormous amount of smoke in the surrounding air. With the garage being separate
from the house, she felt it would be safe to go back in. it was then that she bolted in the house,
grabbed shoes, all the phones and made it back outside before inhaling too much smoke. Both
children were in awe. How on earth could this be happening. The brother went to look in the
window. When he heard the neighbor screaming to back away, he quickly jumped back, just as the
window happened to blow out. He was lucky he got back in time. After the initial shock at the sight,
she realized that he needed to call someone. She called her father, even though he had moved out
months prior. The girl always went to her father before anyone else. "Dad the garage is on fire! I
don't know what to do, Mom isn't home, and just the two of us. What do I do?" she screamed and
cried into the phone, pleading for an answer. "I need you to hang up and call your mother and tell

Hence, Oedipus's tragic flaw was his own intelligence, which later became curiosity for the all the

relationship, she endures it and this takes a severe toll on her mental and physical wellbeing, this is
represents her hamartia as she does not possess the self–confidence required to stand up for herself.
Furthermore, the plot of a tragic story must be in close proximity to Aristotle's ideology and the
tragic hero must meet with an untimely demise which is in parallel to the main story line. "Story of
an Hour" is a tragic short story with all the qualities and attributes that both Aristotle and
Shakespeare write with. It possesses a key aspect of a tragedy, which is having a tragic hero that
evokes pity and is burdened with a tragic flaw. Moreover, this story follows many of the other
elements of a tragic story such as catharsis and the recognition of potential. The common belief of
tragic stories is that the protagonist, or tragic hero, must be a man of high status. This is evidentially
proven insignificant in the short story "Story of an Hour" as society forgets that it is, in many cases,
the woman that preserves and manages the home environment as well as the family's needs.

The man turned towards her voice and smiled when he saw who had called, "Ah hello, you must be Tabitha Belcher aren't you?" Laurance frowned, "You haven't met each other yet?" "Ah, Laurance Nye, I didn't know you'd be gracing my vessel this evening." Barnabas stated, shaking Laurence's hand. "Neither did I," Laurance said, "but my friend Tabitha here told me you wanted to make her an apprentice on your ship." Barnabas nodded, "Aye, that's right. Choosing a seemingly random direction she advanced forward with excitement. "Do you even know where we're going?" Laurance asked, glancing around suspiciously. "Of course," Tabbie huffed, "I've studied the design of airships since I was little. I think I would know the way to the engine room." She looked over her shoulder at him, "Shouldn't you know all this stuff 'Mister Owner?'" • 5. Essay on The Tragic Story of Victor Hugo Victor Hugo's life was full of sad tragic events and political affairs. Hugo once said, "To die is nothing; but it is terrible not to live." And living is exactly what Hugo accomplished. He wrote numerous stories and essays, lived a vivacious love life and had heated opinions about the government in France. In the end of it all though, Hugo was a great romantic author who still lives on today in his works of literature. Before Victor Hugo there was Joseph Lēopold–Sigsbert Hugo and Sophie Trēbuchet. Mr. Hugo was a soldier for Napoleon's army in France, while Sophie was an orphan living with her aunt. Mr. Hugo believed himself to be a hero because he survived being shot through the neck, thought this fact did not impress Sophie when they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hugo's boyhood was full of traveling and war. Though he was not like his other brothers who were interested by playing war and strategy games; Hugo was more interested in drawing animals and humans. At this age he wrote little plays and created the backdrops and stages for them. They boys also had schooling in France, but it was incomplete due to the number of times they moved. In 1817, Hugo received his first taste of fame at age 15 when he entered a poem contest at the Acadēmie Française. No one could fathom that a boy of his young age could write as well as he did and for this reason he did not win the grand prize but received a mention honorable. He was also fairly young when he became secretly engaged to his childhood friend, Adèle Foucher, in 1819; she was only 15. This young romance was soon spoiled though when Adēle's parents found Hugo's love letter and forbade them to see each other. Hugo's young adulthood was not filled with happy times. In 1821 Sophie became ill with consumption, known today as tuberculosis. Sophie moved to Mezieris where she became better but fell ill once again. Then in June1821, she died from tuberculosis after she fell ill again. Hugo was shaken by his mother's death but his brother Eugéne was even more. Though Hugo did realize he could not do what he wanted to do: marry Adēle. At last the long–awaited marriage happened on October 12, 1822. • 15. William Shakespeare 's Romeo And Juliet Essay There is no questioning that William Shakespeare's plays are influential. They were written centuries ago, yet are still enjoyed by people to this day, and hold a place in modern high school and university curricula. However, as with many other literary works, some of Shakespeare's plays are received better by audiences and readers than others. Romeo and Juliet, the tragic story of two "star– cross'd lovers" (Shakespeare, 5) who pursue their love for each other despite the feud between their families, is considered by some to be one of Shakespeare's greatest works; however, the question of whether it is his greatest tragedy remains under dispute. This play is different from other Shakespearean tragedies in that in several ways, it does not fit the traditional characteristics or structure of a tragic work. It can be feasibly argued that this, as well as the fact that the main characters are much younger than those in Shakespeare's other plays, takes away from the tragic element. Through analyzing Romeo and Juliet, one is able to reasonably conclude that while it is classified as a tragedy, it is not a very effective one. One of the unique things about Romeo and Juliet is that the structure of the first three acts more closely follows that of a comedy, i.e. a non– tragic play, than that of a tragedy. In a comedy, the protagonist must overcome obstacles in order to solve a problem, usually with the help of another character. This is seen quite clearly in acts one to three: Romeo ... • 17. Othello : An Aristotelian Tragedy And Tragic Hero Othello, an Aristotelian Tragedy and Tragic Hero When reading a story, specifically a tragedy, what stands out? Tragedy often enables its audience to reflect on personal values that might be in conflict with civil ideas, on the claims of minorities that it neglected or excluded from public life, on its on irrational prejudices toward the foreign of the unknown (Kennedy & Gioia, 2103, p. 857). Readers feel sympathy for the characters, especially the tragic hero. Othello, the Moor of Venice is a prime example of a great tragic story which follows the example Aristotle brings to light in his Poetics (guidelines to drama). The Aristotelian definition of a tragedy and a tragic hero have certain requirements; these requirements are met in Othello, the Moor of Venice, as a story of imitation, incorporating pity, fear, perpeteia, anagnorisis, and catharsis, Othello is also seen as an Aristotelian tragic hero as someone that is good, appropriate, lifelike, of noble birth, is of high character, and who has a tragic flaw which meets the Aristotelian definition. The requirements for a work in drama to be considered an Aristotelian tragedy are explained in Aristotle's Poetics. These requirements make it difficult to signify a drama as a tragedy. "Aristotle's Poetics is a powerful, insightful, and informative document concerning the nature of art, but very few works have been written, Greek, Elizabethan, or modern, that conform to is standards for achieving the essential nature ... • 27. Is the story Daughters of the late Colonel more comic... Is the story Daughters of the late Colonel more comic than tragic for the reader overall? Be sure to comment on Mansfield's use of language. The story "Daughters of the late Colonel", written by Katherine Mansfield takes place during Victorian times, based around two sister's whose father had recently died. Mansfield describes the struggles of these two women as they try to express their femininity and overcome the barriers of etiquette and the presence of their father, whom they feared. The story ends as the sisters Josephine and Constantia attempt to break free of their suppressed world but fail to, thus ending the story in tragedy. Despite this the path leading to the tragic ending is riddled in humorous moments. Therefore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another section which is both humorous as well as pitiable at the same time can be seen during the time when Nurse Andrews comes by to visit, but eats all their butter: "Nurse Andrews was simply fearful about butter... She had that maddening habit of asking for just an inch more bread to finish what she had on her plate, and then, at the last mouthful, absent– mindedly– of course it wasn't absent–mindedly– taking another helping" This entire section is written in Josephine's voice, and thus allows the reader to view her opinion on Nurse Andrews. "fearful" is not very commonly used for such situations, and sounds amusing to the reader. This is also seen through the repetition of "absent–mindedly" as well as the use of dashes which allows the reader to visualize Josephine snapping at the gesture. However, even though she is pictured like this Josephine is unable to stop Nurse Andrews in real life. She merely "got very red when this happened, and she fastened her small, bead–like eyes on the table cloth". This again highlights the dismal state the women are in– though they are the masters of the house, a common nurse is able to dominate them, while the sisters are too weak to do anything against her. However, this comical moment also highlights a more serious, tragic point about the sisters. The word "fearful" is a pun; it also highlights the fact that Josephine is fearful that Nurse Andrew will take all their butter, as it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Antigone Tragic Character Analysis A tragic character is a character in a tragic play that goes through the three different stages of a tragic character. The stages of a tragic character are hamartia, peripeteia, and anagnorisis. Hamartia is the flaw in their personality that leads to their downfall. A flaw could often be, but not limited to pride, ignorance, and selfishness. Peripeteia is the characters change in fortune also leading to their downfall. This is the part in the play where the story "flips" to give the tragic character different circumstances. These "flips" are mostly out of the control of the character and decided by gods or other uncontrollable forces. Anagnorisis is the epiphany that the character has towards the end of the tragedy. This is when the tragic character realizes that their tragic flaw has led to their downfall, and their change in fortune cannot be avoided. I think that there are many characters in "Antigone" that could fit the criteria of a tragic character, but there is only one character that fits the description of a tragic character perfectly. Antigone is often perceived as the tragic character as the play is named after her and she is the protagonist. She does possess some of the qualities of a tragic character, but not all of them. Her hamartia, or tragic flaw is her loyalty to her family which causes her to rebel against authority. But if you were to somehow ask Antigone if she would have been less loyal to her family if the result would have been different, I almost guarantee that she wouldn't have changed a thing. Her change in fortune could be when Creon decides to put her to death because of her actions. This isn't really a change in fortune because she knew this would happen if she buried her brother. I do not think Antigone ever went through the last stage of a tragic character. She never had a realization of her mistake that led to her downfall. She was fine with taking the consequences of her actions, and found no fault in her personality or decision. She might have ended the story with suicide, but there was not a moment that she regret making the decisions that she did. Because of this, I do not think Antigone is the tragic character in the play as one might argue. I think a character that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Oedipus the King, a Tragic Hero Essay Oedipus, a tragic hero Sophocles's Oedipus Rex is probably the most famous tragedy ever written. Sophocles's tragedy represents a monumental theatrical and interpretative challenge. Oedipus Rex is the story of a King of Thebes upon whom a hereditary curse is placed and who therefore has to suffer the tragic consequences of fate (tragic flaws or hamartia). In the play, Oedipus is the tragic hero. Even though fate victimizes Oedipus, he is a tragic figure since his own heroic qualities, his loyalty to Thebes, and his fidelity to the truth ruin him. In The Poetics, the greatest statement of classical dramatic theory, Aristotle cites Oedipus as the best example of Greek tragedy. According to Aristotle, Oedipus is a tragic hero because ... Here the hunger for the truth overshadowed by his grandiosity as explained by Miller has made Oedipus to find out what he hadn't expected. He was just willing to help somebody but as it was overcame from his confidence and proud, the story is able to manipulate the audience's feeling and make feel sorry for the character even though it is already known to the audiences that Oedipus was wrong, as seen from his confident and proud actions. While in Thelma and Louise, the feelings generated to the audience are different. Unlike Oedipus, in Thelma and Louise the human feelings were not played ironically but instead were diverted from characters actions from one wrong action to series of others. Oedipus ends in misery and sorrow of his past but Thelma and Louise ends up surrounded by the results of their wrong activities, which they tried to overcome by running away from it rather than facing it like Oedipus. • 43. Lack Of Privacy In Amanda Todd's Tragic Story Amanda Todd's tragic story transpired over the span of three years, and it all started by sending one picture over the internet. Several things can be attributed to the hidden cause of her death. One reason could be that she was too young to have enough common sense to be trusted to be put on online sites. Many children are exposed to the internet at a much younger age than needed or is healthy. Another is the lack of security you have when on the internet. Most likely she did not realize that once she sent that picture, all of her problems would start. This is sadly not the only case of cyber bullying. Many of these cases end with death. This is another negative aspect of technology: Lack of privacy. As Amanda's story shows, many people don't know that once something is put online, it is online permanently and can be used against you by someone or something. • 45. Achilles: a Tragic Hero Essay example Achilles as Tragic Hero In his classic work "Poetics" Aristotle provided a model of the tragic hero. According to Aristotle, the tragic hero is more admirable than the average person. This results in the tragic hero being admired by the audience. For the audience to accept a tragic ending as just, it is crucial that the tragic hero be responsible for their undoing. At the same time though, they must remain admired and respected. This is achieved by the tragic hero having a fatal flaw that leads to their undoing. One of literature's examples of the tragic hero is Achilles from Homer's The Iliad. However, Achilles is different from the classic tragic hero in one major way – his story does not end tragically. Unlike the usual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This illustrates that Achilles can be considered as being more admirable than the average person. This is also expressed in the poem, such as where Apollo refers to Achilles saying, "Let that man beware, or great and glorious as he is, / We mighty gods will wheel on him in anger – look, / He outrages the senseless clay in all his fury!" (Homer, XXIV 58–60). This passage recognizes Achilles as great and glorious. This passage also mentions the fatal flaw, which is the second requirement of Aristotle's hero. Achilles fatal flaw is his tendency to go to extremes out of anger. Apollo recognizes this where he refers to Achilles' fury. This fatal flaw is also expressed in the opening lines of the poem, "Rage – Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles, / murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses" (Homer, I 1–2). The rage that is spoken of first causes Achilles to react and refuse to join the battle. When Patroclos is killed, it then causes Achilles to react again, with his rage driving him too far. This allows the audience to see that Achilles is a great man, while having a fatal flaw that leads to his own undoing. The final aspect of the tragic hero is that his life ends tragically because of his downfall. If Achilles fit with this model perfectly, he would become aware of his excessive rage at the end of the poem. However, while he did become a better person ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. Tragic Story Of Romeo And Juliet The most famous love/tragedy story of all time is most likely the story of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are two characters written by William Shakespeare who are pulled through a tragedy that ultimately unites their families in the end. Because of the feud their forbidden love is kept a secret. Many people love the timeless tale of the great tragedy and often romanticise it to make it more like a love story. Because of this many people see love like Romeo and Juliet's, secret, forbidden, and passionate, and want something just like it. I disagree, I think that that kind of would never work in the real world. For starters, what most people don't know is that the whole story of Romeo and Juliet takes the time of four days. And the two lovers met, fell in love, and were married by the second day. They met at the Capulets dance, and Romeo is only there to try and find a girl prettier than his old girlfriend. Which makes their love look for lack of a better word, cheapened. Then when Juliet goes home, Romeo follows her and sits outside her bedroom window and listens to her talking about him. Then they talk, kiss a lot, Juliet proposes, and Romeo accepts. Then they go to the friar who only marries them because he thinks that it will end the feud (which still happens anyway.) Their love seems strong but also blinding. And in Act 3 scene 2 when Tybalt, Juliet's cousin dies, she only cries because Romeo is banished. I think that their love would not work in our world ... I like to think back to when we were children. How modest, immature, and awkward she was back then. She did change, but over time, evolving rather than taking on any new radical thought that blew her way. How different she is now. All the softness of a child replaced by sharp edges and chiseled lines. Oh, but a bit of softness does remain. Right there on her lips. The tender curve to ... She was unfailingly kind; she always put others first and herself last. No matter how tired she was, even after staying up all night, she was never short with me. My admiration for her was deep– seated and long–lasting. She saw the world as a wonderful cluster of shapes and hues, often ones I had never observed before. Her hand moves over the canvas, almost as if her mind is directing her hand instinctively to the right spot. She stared at the reflections of her own mind, unable to decide what the focus of the piece is, while I gazed, entranced by her. The stroke lines are faint, but I'd like to see it to be expressed as a series of paintings with each idea given time and space. It was all a canvas that left her just enough space to paint her own story in the whites of the world. I could meet a million fabulous people, all of them with interesting lives and philanthropic deeds, and not one of them could replace her. Because to me, she was art ... • 63. Is Willy Loman A Tragic Hero "Willy was a salesman...He's a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine" ("Death line 19). Anyone can agree that Willy Loman was a salesman that desired the American dream in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. However, it is debated whether Willy may be considered a tragic hero or not. The controversial debate is centered around Aristotle's definition, Arthur Miller's Essay–"Tragedy and the Common Man," and analysis of other tragedies. Both interpretations of a tragic hero include characteristics, such as, having a tragic flaw, suffering from the tragic flaw, and producing a catharsis in the audience. The two interpretations begin to contradict each other when Aristotle says the tragic hero must be of noble stature, while Arthur Miller believes a common man can also be tragic. Despite these contradictions, Willy Loman can be perceived as a tragic hero because he is noble in his own way, he has a tragic flaw, and the audience has a tragic response. Have you ever hear anyone ever say "You are different in your own way"? This quote means each person is different and has different qualities that make them unique. Willy is noble in his own way, meaning he may not be exactly like other tragic heroes, but he still has the qualities to let him be considered a tragic hero. Aristotle, the first critic of tragedy, believed a tragedy must be serious. This meant characters needed to be of an elevated status. Since a tragedy involves the fall of a ... • 67. A Short Story : The Tragic Story Of Wilson's Life Research has said that on average, most Americans will experience some sort of tragic incident in their lifetime. Very rarely does a person or family experience more than one in a single day, but it is not unheard of. This specific tragedy took place in a small town in Colorado called Peyton. It was Wednesday, October 7, 2009. After school, two children ran up the .25–mile–long driveway to their house. It was an older brother and younger sister. Their cousin would've usually been with them, but she was at the school still. While the little girl was inside eating lunch, her brother bolted into the living room after being outside. "The garage is on fire," he shouted, "you need to come quick!" The little girl was used to her brother lying to her. He did it all the time. Never had he tried this one before. She was impressed at how realistic he made it. There was no way she was going to believe him. He left to go back outside, but left the door open. The house began to fill with smoke, and she finally realized that maybe her brother wasn't lying. She went outside, and couldn't believe her eyes. There was an enormous amount of smoke in the surrounding air. With the garage being separate from the house, she felt it would be safe to go back in. it was then that she bolted in the house, grabbed shoes, all the phones and made it back outside before inhaling too much smoke. Both children were in awe. How on earth could this be happening. The brother went to look in the window. When he heard the neighbor screaming to back away, he quickly jumped back, just as the window happened to blow out. He was lucky he got back in time. After the initial shock at the sight, she realized that he needed to call someone. She called her father, even though he had moved out months prior. The girl always went to her father before anyone else. "Dad the garage is on fire! I don't know what to do, Mom isn't home, and just the two of us. What do I do?" she screamed and cried into the phone, pleading for an answer. "I need you to hang up and call your mother and tell her what's going on. I'm going to call 911 okay? You guys need to get back and wait for the fire department to get there. I'll be there as soon as I can sweetie," her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Oedipus's tragic flaw is gained once he obtained his greatness and became king. Oedipus's knowledge contained arrogance, and a metaphorical blindness that fosters his urge for the truth. Hence, Oedipus's tragic flaw was his own intelligence, which later became curiosity for the all the burdens that is be fallen over his kingdom. He had a troubling obsession for learning the truth, so he could not sit aside so he went on a menacing quest for answers. Oedipus stated a message that reveled his flaw, "Then once more I must bring what is dark to light, but for my own sake to be rid of evil" ( Sophocles 134; 140). His pride and determination clouded his judgment to see the surface of the whole truth. The truth is Oedipus wanted to avoid his fate, but instead his own tragic flaw walked him into it. Even after Oedipus learned of the truth from the prophecy, his mind continued to deny what was the actual truth. The prophet spoke these words to Oedipus, "I say that you, with your eyes, are blind / you can not see the wretchedness of your life" (Sophocles 196–197). He still ventured on to find the alternative to his fate and he only became worse. Soon Oedipus's pride corrupted his intelligence increasing his flaw. • 75. Story Of An Hour Critical Analysis "Story of an hour" by Kate Chopin, a short story that eliminates the thought that true tragic stories can only be achievable if the protagonist is a man of high estate. This short story exhibits the effects that a superficial marriage can have on a woman and exudes pathos from the audience, an essential quality of a tragic story. Mrs. Louis Mallard, unable to extricate or relieve herself from this relationship, she endures it and this takes a severe toll on her mental and physical wellbeing, this is represents her hamartia as she does not possess the self–confidence required to stand up for herself. Furthermore, the plot of a tragic story must be in close proximity to Aristotle's ideology and the tragic hero must meet with an untimely demise which is in parallel to the main story line. "Story of an Hour" is a tragic short story with all the qualities and attributes that both Aristotle and Shakespeare write with. It possesses a key aspect of a tragedy, which is having a tragic hero that evokes pity and is burdened with a tragic flaw. Moreover, this story follows many of the other elements of a tragic story such as catharsis and the recognition of potential. The common belief of tragic stories is that the protagonist, or tragic hero, must be a man of high status. This is evidentially proven insignificant in the short story "Story of an Hour" as society forgets that it is, in many cases, the woman that preserves and manages the home environment as well as the family's needs. ...
