ROJoson PEP Talk
I have a Patient
Empowerment
Program in which I
like to empower the
lay people or
patients to take
control in the
management of
their health.
I started the PEP Talk
on May 15, 2021.
There are 3 courses
in the PEP Talk.
I completed the Core
Course on October 9,
2021.
From October 23,
2021 onwards, I have
been tackling Health
Disorder and Health
Issue Courses. This
may take 3 years or
longer depending on
our enthusiasm,
discipline and
perseverance.

What is an infection?
The invasion and growth of germs in the body
causing symptoms of infection such as fever,
pain, redness, and pus.
The presence of germs or their multiplication per
se is not infection. [colonization]
There must be invasion and there must be
interactions between the germs and the body
with clinical expression (with symptoms).

What are the different types of infections?
Types of infection are basically classified as what
kind of germs are causing the infection.
The germs may be bacteria, viruses, fungi, or
other microorganisms.
Thus, basically:
• Bacterial infection
• Viral infection
• Fungal infection

What are the causes of infections?
Germs
Invasion and damage to body tissues and organs
• Germ load (bacterial load; viral load; fungal
load) - amount
• Invasiveness of germs
• Susceptibility of host (human body)
The invasion and growth of germs in the body –
INFECTION.

Fundamentals
When the body’s
immune system is
strong, it can often
fight the germs and
cure an infection.
Infections can begin
anywhere in the
body and may
spread all through it.
What are the causes of infections?
Infections can begin anywhere in the body and may spread all through
it.
Entry points:
• Through the skin
• Through openings in the body
 mouth and nose – digestive tract and respiratory tract
 ears
 anus
• Through blood stream and lymphatic channel after entry through
skin and openings in the body

• Avoid contact as much as possible (zero load)
• Decrease the load if zero load not possible
Invasiveness of germs

How to prevent infections?
• Hand Hygiene – decrease / zero the load on
the body (skin and openings) passing from the
hands
• Body Hygiene (shower) – decrease / zero the
load on the body (skin and openings – ears,
mouth, nose, and anus)

How to control infections (when they set in already)?
For infected surface wounds, wash with water and mild soap at least
once a day.
For infections that need medical expertise, consult a physician asap.
Take proper medications for germ control and only when needed as not
all need antigerm drugs (antibiotics for bacteria; antivirals for viral;
antifungals for fungal)
Reinforce hand and body hygiene.
Improve host resistance by REST, adequate healthy diet, high fluid intake
and moderate exercise.
