Nutrition is an important part of any cancer treatment plan, especially for those individuals who are undergoing colorectal cancer treatment and have had surgery to remove part of the colon. Another important consideration for patients who have had surgery to remove part of the colon is avoiding a bowel obstruction. Knowing which foods you should and shouldn’t eat can be a helpful part of the treatment and the surgery recovery process. In this webinar, we will talk about how nutrition and avoiding bowel blockages can be helpful to you after a colorectal cancer treatment procedure and what foods to eat as we enter the holiday season.
Margaret Martin, RD, MS, LDN, CDE is a Licensed Dietitian and Nutritionist in the State of Tennessee and James D. Waller, Jr., MD present this lively session.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!
Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

Anti ulcer drugs and their Advance pharmacology ||
Anti-ulcer drugs are medications used to prevent and treat ulcers in the stomach and upper part of the small intestine (duodenal ulcers). These ulcers are often caused by an imbalance between stomach acid and the mucosal lining, which protects the stomach lining.
||Scope: Overview of various classes of anti-ulcer drugs, their mechanisms of action, indications, side effects, and clinical considerations.
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

12. What are gallstones or gallbladder
stones?
Gallstones are hardened, concentrated
pieces of BILE that form in gallbladder
or bile ducts.
“Gall” means bile, so gallstones are
bile stones. Gallbladder is the bile
bladder. It holds and stores bile for
later use. The liver makes bile, and the
bile ducts carry it to the different
organs through the biliary tract.

13. What are gallstones or gallbladder
stones?
Gallstones form when bile sediment
collects and crystallizes. Often, the
sediment is an excess of one of the
main ingredients in bile.

• Pigment stones
• Mixed stones with calcium salts – most
common in the Philippines
GALLBLADDER
STONES – HOW
EFFECTIVE AND
USEFUL ARE
NON-SURGICAL
TREATMENT?
15. What causes gallstones?
Gallstones may form if bile contains too much
cholesterol, too much bilirubin, or not enough
bile salts.
Researchers do not fully understand why these
changes in bile occur.
Gallstones also may form if the gallbladder does
not empty completely or often enough.

16. What causes gallstones?
Gallstones are thought to develop because of an
IMBALANCE in the chemical make-up of bile
inside the gallbladder. The exact cause of the
imbalance is not known.
Gallstones form when there’s an excess of one of
the main ingredients in bile.
The excess ingredient turns to sediment at the
bottom of your gallbladder or bile ducts, and the
sediment gradually hardens into stones.

(with symptoms, particularly pain at the right
upper quadrant of the abdomen).

18. t
Do all patients with gallstones need treatment?
If the gallstones never cause problems, NO
treatment is needed. If they are causing pain,
treatment is needed.
If gallstones cause a blockage in the biliary tract,
the blockage have to be remedied — not just the
blockage, but all of them (gallstones).
Once gallstones have caused a blockage, they’re
highly likely to do so again.

19. Do all patients with gallstones need treatment?
Most people who need treatment for gallstones
will have surgery to remove them. SURGERY IS
THE ONLY WAY TO ENSURE GALLSTONES WON’T
CAUSE ISSUES AGAIN.
But if you can’t or don’t want to have surgery, it
is said there are some alternative treatments to
try, including medications and other procedures.

Observation
- The risks of developing symptoms or complications
from gallstones in patients who have no symptoms is on
the order of 20% over 20 years. Thus, patients who are
older than 40 years of age and have no other
indications for gallbladder treatment can be
observed. Although there is a risk of having an attack at

complications, this is small. However, patients with
symptoms should consider treatment.

Medicines to dissolve the gallstones
• There are medicines in the market
(particularly, URODEOXYCHOLIC ACID)
commonly prescribed by physicians for
patients with gallstones.
• These are expensive (about P50 / cap) and
these are usually taken 3 x a day for 6 to 12
months (minimum of 3 months).

Medicines to dissolve the gallstones
• Patients with cholesterol gallstones who take
the drug for two years have a 20% chance of
having their gallstones dissolved.
• These patients need to continue taking once
per day after the stones dissolve since their
gallbladder remains diseased and there is a 30
to 50% chance of recurrence of gallstones in 3
to 5 years without further treatment.

Conclusion:
It is not cost-effective
to take dissolution
therapy
(urodeoxycholic acid)
for gallstones.
It can take months or
years for all of the
gallstones to break
up.
There is recurrence.

Gallbladder Cleanse or Flushing
Gallbladder Cleanse Myths
If you see a gallbladder cleanse promoted, it most likely encourages you to eat
or drink olive oil in combination with a particular fruit juice over a certain
period of time. Claims include that these ingredients break up gallstones in
your gallbladder and stimulate your body to pass them in your stool when you
use the bathroom.
Olive oil does have laxative properties, but there is no proof that it has an
impact on gallstones. If you look at your stool following an olive oil cleanse,
you may see lumps in your stool that you suspect are gallstones. Instead, they
are GLOBS of olive oil, juice, and other food from your digestive tract.

29. Gallbladder Cleanse or Flushing
Using apple / apple juice, Epsom salt, olive oil, lemon juice
First five days
You can eat 4-5 apples or drink 4 glasses of apple juice for the first five days.
Sixth day –
Skip your evening meal. Instead, you have to drink a big cup of warm water along with a
teaspoon of Epsom salt mixed in it. Repeat this process again after 1.5 hours. This will aid in
releasing the gallstones.
With your second drink of warm water and Epsom salt, you can try various combinations for
proper lubrication that will help in releasing the bladder stones out of your bladder. You can
add a tablespoon of sesame oil or olive oil in this drink. Else, you can mix lemon juice of a
whole lemon in this drink.
Seventh-day
You will have your bowel movement. You will observe stones with a greenish tint in your
stools.

Lithotripsy, or shock wave dissolution of
gallstones, is a technique that uses a highly
focused sound wave to break the stones up into
tiny particles that can then pass through the
cystic duct into the common duct and out into
the intestine.

34. What are the advice on non-surgical treatment for gallstones?
For asymptomatic gallstones, just observe. Avoid fatty foods.
For symptomatic gallstones, go for surgery to remove the whole
gallbladder with the stones.
Do not go for gallbladder cleanse and flushing as it is not effective.
Do not go for oral dissolution medications (such as urodeoxycholic acid)
as it is not cost-effective.
If you do not want surgery, eat healthy diet, exercise, avoid fatty foods,
drink a lot of water and hang-on.
