12. REALITY
Our body is constantly producing new cells, some
of which have the potential to become cancerous.
But that doesnât mean theyâre destined to
become cancer.

13. REALITY
A typical, healthy cell has a life cycle of growth,
division, and death.
DOES EVERYONE
HAVE CANCER
CELLS IN THEIR
BODY?
First, what is a cell?
The cell is the basic structural and functional unit
of all forms of life (human beings included).
14. REALITY
A typical, healthy cell has a life cycle of growth,
division, and death.
DOES EVERYONE
HAVE CANCER
CELLS IN THEIR
BODY?
Human beings are complex multicellular
organisms made up of trillions of cells. Scientists
estimate that the adult human body
contains around 37 trillion human cells.

15. REALITY
A typical, healthy cell has a life cycle of growth,
division, and death.
DOES EVERYONE
HAVE CANCER
CELLS IN THEIR
BODY?
The human body is made up of around 200 different cell types, each
with a unique structure, size, shape, and set of organelles. Each type
of cell is adapted to perform a specific function, for example:
â˘Red blood cells are adapted to transport oxygen around the body
â˘Muscle cells are adapted to enable movement
â˘Adipocytes (fat cells) are adapted for fat storage
â˘Neurons (nerve cells) are adapted to transmit nerve impulses
â˘Sex cells (sperm and eggs cells) are adapted for reproduction

Natural Cell
Death
What is cell death?
Cell death occurs when cells in our body stop working and
die. Cells in our body reproduce â a process called cell
division or mitosis. Experts believe that healthy human cells
can replicate or divide up to 60 times before cell death
occurs. Our body is constantly making new cells to replace
damaged and dying ones.
Natural cell death keeps our body healthy and functioning.
Problems arise when cell death doesnât happen as expected
or cells die when they shouldnât.

18. REALITY
A typical, healthy cell has a life cycle of growth,
division, and death.
A cancer cell is an abnormal cell that
doesnât follow this cycle.
Instead of dying off as they should, cancer cells
reproduce more abnormal cells that can invade
nearby tissue. They can also travel throughout
the blood and lymph systems to other parts of
the body.

24. Whatâs the difference between cancer cells and
normal cells?
In a nutshell, normal cells obey instructions.
Cancer cells donât.
Normal cells grow and divide only as needed to
replace damaged or aging cells. Mature cells have
specialized functions. Once they fulfill their
purpose, they die off, completing their life cycle.
DOES EVERYONE
HAVE CANCER
CELLS IN THEIR
BODY?
https://www.healthline.com/health/does-everyone-have-cancer-cells
25. Whatâs the difference between cancer cells and
normal cells?
Cancer cells have mutated genes and are less
specialized than normal cells. Cancer cells donât
follow the regular routine. Needed or not, they
grow and divide and donât die off when they
should. Itâs this out-of-control growth that leads
to cancer.
DOES EVERYONE
HAVE CANCER
CELLS IN THEIR
BODY?
https://www.healthline.com/health/does-everyone-have-cancer-cells
26. Whatâs the difference between cancer cells and
normal cells?
Cancer cells pile up to form tumors
and spread into surrounding tissue. These cells
can also break away and travel to other parts of
the body.

29. Does everyone inherently have cancer
cells in their body?
No, we donât all have cancer cells in our bodies.
Most of the time, cells with damaged DNA either
repair themselves or die off through apoptosis.
The potential for cancer happens only when
neither of those things happen.

DOES EVERYONE
HAVE CANCER
CELLS IN THEIR

31. What causes cancer?
Cancer is linked to damaged DNA.
Inherited genetic mutations are associated with 5
to 10 percent of all cancers.
Having one of these genetic mutations increases
the risk of developing cancer, but itâs not
inevitable.
DOES EVERYONE
HAVE CANCER
CELLS IN THEIR
BODY?
https://www.healthline.com/health/does-everyone-have-cancer-cells
32. What causes cancer?
Cancer is linked to damaged DNA.
One can also acquire genetic mutations through
other factors, including:
⢠chemicals in tobacco smoke
⢠ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or tanning beds
⢠exposure to radiation, including radiation treatment
⢠poor diet, including a high intake of processed meats
⢠physical inactivity
⢠alcohol misuse
⢠exposure to chemicals such as radon, lead, and asbestos
⢠infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV)
and hepatitis

33. What causes cancer?
Cancer is linked to damaged DNA.
The exact reason someone develops cancer canât
always be determined.
A combination of factors may contribute to the
start of cancer.
Once a cell has a mutation, itâs passed on to every
cell it produces. ------CANCER

34. What can we do to lower our risk of cancer?
We canât completely eliminate the risk of cancer,
the risk to a damaged DNA, but there are steps
we can take to reduce our risk.
⢠Avoid tobacco.
⢠Drink alcohol in moderation.
⢠Protect your skin from sun.
⢠Stick to a healthy, balanced diet.
⢠Exercise.
⢠Hygienic practice against viral infections such
as Hepatitis and Human Papilloma Virus.

35. People often talk about cancer genes with the
misinterpretation that they are cancer cells
inherently present in the body.
NO, cancer genes are not cancer cells inherently
present in the body.
Normal cells are initially present as the starting
point of cancer development.
Normal cells with damaged unfixable DNA or
gene lead to cancer formation.
DOES EVERYONE
HAVE CANCER
CELLS IN THEIR
BODY?
There are 3 types of
normal genes in the
body that regulates
cell growth, division
and death:
⢠Proto-oncogenes
⢠Tumor suppressor
genes
⢠DNA repair genes
36. Proto-oncogenes are genes that normally help
cells grow and divide to make new cells, or to
help cells stay alive.
When a proto-oncogene mutates (changes) or
there are too many copies of it, it can become
turned on (activated) when it is not supposed to
be, at which point it's now called an oncogene.
When this happens, the cell can start to grow out
of control, which might lead to cancer.
DOES EVERYONE

BODY?
There are 3 types of
normal genes in the
body that regulates
cell growth, division
and death:
⢠Proto-oncogenes
⢠Tumor suppressor
genes
⢠DNA repair genes
37. Tumor suppressor genes are normal genes that
slow down cell division or tell cells to die at the
right time (a process known as apoptosis or
programmed cell death). When tumor suppressor
genes don't work properly, cells can grow out of
control, which can lead to cancer.
A tumor suppressor gene is like the brake pedal on a car. It
normally helps keep the cell from dividing too quickly, just
as a brake keeps a car from going too fast. When something
goes wrong with a tumor suppressor gene, that stops it
from working, cell division can get out of control.

There are 3 types of
normal genes in the
body that regulates
cell growth, division
and death:
⢠Proto-oncogenes
⢠Tumor suppressor
genes
⢠DNA repair genes
38. DNA repair genes
When a cell divides to make new cells, it needs to
make a new copy of all of its DNA. This is a
complex process, and sometimes it results in
mistakes in the DNA.
Genes known as DNA repair genes act like a
person who repairs a car. They help fix mistakes
in the DNA, or if they canât fix them, they trigger
the cell to die so the mistakes canât cause any
further problems.

and death:
⢠Proto-oncogenes
⢠Tumor suppressor

⢠DNA repair genes
39. DNA repair genes
When something goes wrong with one of these
DNA repair genes, it can allow more mistakes to
build up inside the cell. Some of these might
affect other genes, which could lead to the cell
growing out of control.
As with other types of gene changes, changes in
DNA repair genes can either be inherited from a
parent or acquired during a personâs lifetime.

41. The bottom line
We donât all have cancer cells in our bodies.
The sheer number of cells our body constantly
makes means that thereâs always the possibility
that some may be damaged. Even then, those
damaged cells wonât necessarily turn into cancer.

42. The bottom line
Cancer typically derives from damage to DNA
through inherited genetic mutations or
something weâre exposed to in our daily life.
We canât control genetic mutations, but some
lifestyle changes can help lower our risk of
developing cancer.
If we donât have damaged proto-oncogenes,
tumor suppressor genes, and DNA repair genes,
then we will not have CANCER development.
