Teenage Pregnancies And Std Contraction
Compared to every other first world country, America is the highest ranking in rates of teenage
pregnancies and STD contraction. What is it about the US and its approach to sexual education that
produces such numbers amongst its youth? The prevailing sexuality education system in the US is
abstinence–only sex education programs. Abstinence–only–until–marriage education in schools is
highly destructive to its students in multiple ways.
Abstinence–only sexuality education does more harm to students than good, and is shown to have
adverse effects on its students. The CDC Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance study showed that 10%
of youth in the US have never been formally taught about HIV or AIDS, the majority being students
in abstinence–only programs. (as cited in Mallone and Rodriguez) With abstinence–until–marriage
programs failing to provide vital information on STDs, millions of teeangers are at higher risk to
engage in unsafe sexual activity. Bruckner and Bearman studies conclude that 88% of teens who
pledge abstinence break that pledge, and of that 88%, ⅓ less likely to use contraception. (as cited in
Taverners) Abstinence–only education does not only fail to enforce its ideals, but also fails to
educate its students properly in comprehensive sexuality aspects. This lack of proper education can
come with drastic consequences, resulting from a huge lack of vital information. A study conducted
by Henry Watman found that "80% of federally funded abstinence until marriage

Pros And Cons Of Sex Education
Texas is reputable for implementing abstinence only sex education. About 60% of public schools
only teach this curriculum (Howell). This leaves thousands of students of various ages with an
altered view of sex and insufficient information on safe sex practice and contraception. This
program has also proved itself ineffective because Texas ranks fifth highest nationally in teen birth
rates with 41 births per 1,000 women (Howell). 4 out of 5 adolescent pregnancies are unintended"
(Gelfond, 597).Abstinence only programs have failed because they do not prevent or even educate
students about safe sex practices, contraception, and Texas still remains in the forerunner for highest
rates of STDs and teen pregnancy.
Teen pregnancy rate is at an all–time high because of the lack of proper sex education. Southern
states, like Texas, teach sex education in a traditional manner that does not work. In the curriculum
students are taught about sex on the principle of if you have sex, you die. In 1982, the Texas
government introduced the Adolescence Family Act which lead to funding for abstinence–only and
abstinence–only–until–marriage programs (hereafter, collectively called abstinence–only) in 1996
(Howell, 2). According to Advocates for Youth, "This grew exponentially with the enactment of
welfare reform (P.L. 104–193)." The law contained a mandate of $50 million per year to fund
abstinence–only programs. In fact, the law amended the Maternal and Child Health Block Grant
legislation

Hiv And Its Effects On The United States
Half of all new human immunodeficiency virus, also known as HIV infections in the United States
and two thirds of all sexually transmitted diseases (STD) occur among young people under the age
of 25 (Starkman, Rajani). It's estimated that by the end of high school, nearly two thirds of
American's youth are sexually active, and one in five has had four or more sexual partners
(Starkman, Rajani). Despite these alarming statistics, less than half of all public schools in the
United States offer information on how to obtain contraceptives and most schools teach "abstinence
only" education (Starkman, Rajani). Even more alarmingly there is little evidence that abstinence
only curriculums are successful in encouraging teenagers from delaying ... Show more content on

Required academic programs can help adolescents develop a sense of embodiment and sexual
agency, and cultivate the social, emotional, and cognitive skills they need to make healthy decisions
and engage in fulfilling relationships (Sanoff). For every rape victim there is a rapist, and though it's
hard to say what causes someone to rape, society must start the transition from saying "Don't get
raped." to "Don't rape." Sexuality education and youth development, if utilized properly can work as
a cohesive tool in helping adolescents understand the gravity of their sexual actions. In John Willey's
book 'The Trauma of Sexual Assault" he dedicates an entire chapter to stereotypes in rape culture.
One such stereotype being that "real mean, can't be raped" as well as "rapist have a biological
uncontrollable desire" both of these are examples of such topics that should be discussed with
children (Willey, 10–12). Society should be supporting the idea that it is never the victims fault,
regardless of gender and they should also discuss the topic of mental health. By addressing these
stereotypes it opens the door to open conversations and awareness. Youth development is about
nourishing the strengths of youth, building life skills, and providing an open environment to discuss
questions and concerns. One common reason many are

The Effectiveness Of Abstinence Only Sex Education
Everyone has their own way of raising children. This sometimes causes problems while deciding on
what children should learn in school. A child's upbringing is vital in determining what they will
grow up to be. It is hard enough to raise a child, but it is even harder when you have to watch
society as well. In today's age there are a lot of things that parents cannot shield their child from
seeing that used to be easy to hide. So much can be easily accessed through the touch of a finger.
Which is why children need more education on what is happening in the world now. Schools are the
safest place to talk to children about how the times have changed. While some schools cater to
religion being taught the same thing is not set in place for sex ... Show more content on

In Utrecht, Netherlands sexual education begins as early as age 4. The Dutch Sexuality Institute, the
entity behind the curriculum encourages students age 4 and up to have open conversations regarding
sex, love, and relationships. The Netherlands government have even made it a law for all primary
students to have some form of sexual education. The teachers mandated to enact this curriculum
have administrative freedom as long as they include key concepts such as sexual assertiveness and
sexual diversity. These key concepts were chosen with hopes that it will enrich the students with the
skills to later on protect them against sexual coercion, intimidation, and abuse. Thanks to social
media there have been negative connotations in regards to sexual activity. One of the curriculums
main goals is to show students that sexuality can consisted of intimacy, respect, and safety. Melker
says "The system allows for flexibility in how it's taught. But it must address certain core principles
– among them, sexual diversity and sexual assertiveness. That means encouraging respect for all
sexual preferences and helping students develop skills to protect against sexual coercion,
intimidation and abuse" (Melker, 2015). The Dutch's approach to sexual education have become the
center of attention across the globe, and they have not hesitated upon bragging about the results

Should Abstinence Only Sex Education?
When I was in the eighth grade, I remember attending a sex education course. At the young
impressionable age of fourteen, I listened quietly as the lecturer showed us grotesque pictures of
sexually transmitted infections and warned us that abstinence was the only effective way to not get
pregnant. At the end of lecture, everyone at the assembly was handed a little card that read,
"Virginity Pledge" and we were all required to sign them. Looking back on this memory, I am
appalled by the severe lack of scientific foundation of the lecture, the use of misinterpreted statistics,
and the use of peer pressure in requiring students to sign pledge cards. Many students my age
probably have a similar experience with this type of sex education, which is referred to as
abstinence–only sex education. Students deserve a better sex education than what the abstinence–
only sex education programs provide. Abstinence–only sex education should be removed from all
U.S. schools and replaced with comprehensive sexuality education. Curriculum for abstinence–only
sex education is restricted to heterosexuality and bares no mention homosexuality or asexuality due
to the program's affiliations with religious groups and their morals and beliefs. Abstinence–only sex
education strives to prevent teens from having sex before marriage. Marriage in these programs
refers to heterosexual marriage, which alienates homosexual individuals. Homosexuality is usually
only mentioned during discussions of AIDS and

Sex Education Is More Beneficial Than Abstinence Only...
All over the world in classrooms, households, churches and sometimes in every day life sex
education is a topic on people's minds. Whether this topic is taught in detail rather than in avoidance
of the action is the debate we need to have. It is almost impossible to go all of our lives without
being exposed to some level of education of sexual activity. Sometimes that education is associated
with positivity and other times it is comparable to the sin of all sins. Sex education is more
beneficial than abstinence only education because those taught to avoid it have no information on
how to safely go about it when their urges surface, as well associating fear of sin and holding them
to pledges of virginity can harm young adult's decision ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She also made it very clear that she does not dispute her actions, but instead fully realizes them and
wishes to use them as a learning opportunity for her kids, and adolescents around the world. Anyone
who wishes to pass on information to another person, similar to the work that teachers do, will
always delve into the information they feel is most important, but what is truly important can be
perceived in many different ways. The safety issues that arise with abstinence only education are
numerous. Young adults will not know anything about the action itself let alone the precautionary
steps that every person should take before engaging in intercourse. It is almost impossible for teens
to know the countless risks that threaten them when a condom is not in play. As well they have no
idea how permanent a lot of those risks are. In abstinence only education it can only be hoped that
they have heard something about sexually transmitted diseases, or pregnancy rates in relation to
sexual activity and if they have this almost always would be very surface level information. With
this situation being setup young teens, who will no doubt face their sexual urges during a very
dynamic time in their bodily development, will then go in blind and act on impulse rather than
accompanying their urges with cautious thought. Sex education

Abstinence-Only And Comprehensive Sex Education In The...
Overview
Sex education, most commonly known as family life, is any information about sex and sexual
relationships taught to maturing young people as a part of a school's curriculum. Currently, there is a
constant political and ideological debate in the United States over the merits of abstinence–only and
comprehensive sex education programs in the teaching of our youth. Abstinence only sex education
has been the primary sex education taught in the United States. Although different in their approach,
the overall goal is to help them build a foundation to be able to make healthy informed decisions as
they mature into adults. The objectives of sex education programs are to help adolescents develop a
positive view of sexuality, body image and make responsible decisions in relationships (Knowles,
2012). Ultimately, any sex education should be a partnership between parents, guardians and school
personnel. However, in recent years, a large amount of information about sexuality is acquired
through friends, music, books and the media instead of from their parents. For some individuals, ...

The United States has some of the highest teen pregnancy rates among developed countries
(Stanger–Hall, 2011). In states where abstinence–only sexuality education is very strict, there is no
data to support decreasing incidences of teen pregnancies. In fact, teen pregnancies rates are almost
twenty percent higher in states where abstinence–only education is heavily stressed compared to
states with no mention of abstinence at all. Because teen pregnancy rates and stricter abstinence–
only curriculums are directly proportional, this would indicate abstinence–only education is not
having the desired effect on students that educators are hoping to have. Comprehensive sexuality
education could possibly result in a decline in teen pregnancy rates by providing factual information
about pregnancy and

Sex Education Is An Important, Emotional And Controversial
Sex education is an important, emotional and controversial topic to teach youth in today's world.
The question is, what is the best information, and the best way to teach them? Comprehensive sex
education is teaching teens how to practice safe sex, providing teens with types of protection, and
how to use it, as well as services and resources available to help them in making decisions to
practice safe sex. Abstinence–only programs teach teens to not have sex, or anything "arousing"
until marriage, and the real world fear of contracting STDs.
Claims, Assumptions, and Support (Melissa)

twenty years. On one side of the argument are the supporters ... Show more content on

Comprehensive Sex education programs which teach abstinence followed by sexual safety is better
than abstinence–only programs because it is a realistic and effective approach not to confuse
students. Emphasis on abstinence and the use of protection for those who choose to have sex
showed convincing evidence of positive influence on teens ' sexual behavior, including delaying
initiation of sex and increasing condom and contraceptive use. Research shows teaching abstinence
alone has no effect on delaying teens starting sexual activities this would give the recipients the best
of both worlds. A balanced sex education program should be taught to help students with decision–
making skills to help them through their entire life.
Types of Arguments (Laura) The types of arguments seen in the articles are evaluation and proposal.
On both sides of the argument, people claim either abstinence–only programs or comprehensive sex
education are good, bad, better, best or indifferent. Some argue that having both programs in one
curriculum is best. For example, in the article "Key Questions for Consideration as a New Federal
Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative in Implemented" by Heather Boonstra, Boonstra claims,
sexual education programs that teach abstinence followed by sexual safety are better than
abstinence–only programs because it is a realistic and effective approach that is not confusing to
students. One example of arguing for comprehensive sex education is from

Sex education in the United States has many different opinions on the most effective ways of
teaching. Social trends, public health concerns, politics and various controversies have all, at
different times and in different ways, affected the substance and teaching of sex education (Future of
Sex Education). 15 percent of Americans believe abstinence–only sex education should teach only
about abstinence and nothing else, however 46 percent believe abstinence and ways to prevent
unwanted pregnancies STD's should also be taught (Future of Sex Education). Abstinence–only sex
education programs are ineffective compared to comprehensive sex education programs and are
very costly within the government.

very similar results to those who did not participate in the abstinence–only programs. The federal
government spends billions of dollars on abstinence–only programs, only to find out these programs

Obama diverted funds from the abstinence–only programs, to provide medically–accurate and age–
appropriate information to youth who have already become sexually active. This is hopes of
reducing the amount of pregnancies and STD's. As society continues to change and grow, one will

The Most Effective Method of Sex Education
INTRODUCTION
Sex is a touchy subject and administrators all over the country have spent years trying to figure out
the best way to teach their minors about it. Sex education in America is crucial because we are
known for our high rates of pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among teenagers.
However, things like religion, morals, and rights are factors that have swayed the education system
making it harder to determine the "right" way to teach sex education. There are two methods of
which sex education can be taught – abstinence only or comprehensively. For my ethnography
project, I chose to examine the difference in effectiveness between the two forms of sex education. I
interviewed individuals from younger and older generation to find out the changes in sex education
from the past to now and to determine what factors have led to the reduction of teen pregnancies and
STI's in America, thus helping me find out what methods are more successful.
BACKGROUND
America, being one of the leading countries for high rates of teen pregnancies and STI's, has ensured
that every state is somehow involved in sex education for students. Each educational institution
however, has its own method of carrying out that education meaning that the effects vary virtually
across every school. In terms of abstinence–only and comprehensive sex education, both sides argue
that their approach is

is present in the majority of all American schools is because sex matters. He makes an in–depth
point about knowing how to handle oneself during sexual or assault encounters. Abramson supports
his point of ''sex matters'' by outlining that lack of age appropriate sexual education has proven to
cause deadly STD's and even death. Many counter arguments are listed for the importance of sexual
education including victims of sexual assault changing their lifestyles in order to protect oneself.
Abramson states that rights and sexual education only makes sense if they are coupled with efforts
to enhance many of the criminal justice system 's practices. Seth agrees that not all children benefit
from sexual education; however, attempting to better a person's life choices or even save a person's
life is more than worth the cost. Seth Abramson, the author of this article, has a very experienced
and appropriate background for this particular topic. His experience includes , but is not

Actually, many states are paying more than ever for their students to receive an abstinence–based

$25 million in additional funding was granted for Title V, an 18–year–old federal program that doles

Abstinence–Only Sexual Education vs. Inclusive Sexual Education
In 1981, the Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA) was signed into law by President Reagan. Through
the act, the federal government first invested in sexual education programs, all of which encouraged
"chastity and self–discipline." After this came the Title V abstinence–only–until–marriage program,
which was created in 1996 as part of the welfare reform legislation. Finally, the Community–Based
Abstinence Education (CBAE), was created in 2000. Now, for over three decades, people are still
debating whether the original approach of teaching abstinence should be kept or if schools should go
into further detail in teaching how to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and
infections from happening.
I believe that all schools should teach an inclusive form of sexual education. I believe that teaching
abstinence is not working in the slightest because the rate of teenagers who are sexually active is
gradually increasing. Since teens are participating in sexual intercourse, we need to teach them how
to have sex safely. Schools need to teach a form of sexual education that will fully cover how to
prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and infections. The abstinence–only–
until–marriage programs need to be replaced because they contain inaccuracies and flaws, the
popular opinion of the American society differs from our state policies, and the government and

EQ: SHOULD COMPREHENSIVE SEX EDUCATION BE TAUGHT IN US PUBLIC SCHOOLS?
While abstinence–only sex education discusses solely abstinence, comprehensive sex education
provides information about various areas of human sexuality and methods to practice safe and
healthy sexual behaviors. To fully understand the controversy surrounding comprehensive sexual
education, one need to obtain knowledge about the history of sex education in the United States,
legislation, class content, and the effects of sexual education policies on student populations. The
first time that sexual education was recognized as an essential part of a national education
curriculum was in 1892 by the National Education Association. There were many times in American
history that showed progression in comprehensive sexual education and distribution of birth control
until the 1970's. In 1975, twenty state governments voted to place restrictions or completely ban
sexual education completely. The Adolescent Family Life Act was passed in 1981 to fund programs
that promote staying sexually abstinent until marriage. Fifteen years later in 1996, Congress funded
$250 million for abstinence until marriage programs. However in 2008, half of the fifty states
rejected renewal of government funding of abstinence–only programs because of new research
suggesting that only teaching abstinence did not impede sexual behavior in teenagers.

Abstinence–only Sex Education does work.
Teenage sexual activity has sparked an outcry within the nation. With such activity comes a high
price. Studies have shown that there has been a significant rise in the number of children with
sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), emotional and psychological problems, and out–of–wedlock
childbearing. Sex has always been discussed publically by the media, television shows, music and
occasionally by parents and teachers in educational context. Teens hear them, and as the saying

for every teenager to be aware of the outcome associated with premature–sex. If students are

Programs that encourage abstinence have become a vital part of school systems in the US. These
programs are usually referred to as abstinence–only or value–based programs while other programs
are called as safer–sex, comprehensive, secular or abstinence–plus programs which on the contrary
promote the usage of effective contraception. Although abstinence–only and safer–sex programs
disagree with one another, their core values and stand on the aims of sex education is to help teens
develop problem–solving skills and the skill of good decision–making. They believe that
adolescents will be better prepared to "act responsibly in the heat of the moment" (Silva). Most
programs that have been currently implemented in the US have seen a delay in the initiation of sex
among teens which proves to be a positive and desirable outcome (Silva).
Statistics from recent studies suggest that only 13% of U.S. teens have ever had sex by the age of
15. But by the age of 19, seven in ten teens of both sexes have had sex. Between 1995 and 2006–
2008, the percentage of teens aged 15–17 who had ever engaged in sexual intercourse declined from
38% to 28%. Among teens aged 18–19, it declined from 68% in 1995 to 60% in 2006–2008. The
pregnancy rate among young women has declined steadily from 117 pregnancies per 1,000 women

Should Abstinence Only Sex Education?
Considering that religion is Americas #1 social institution, it is no surprise that the most widely used
sex education approach follows the beliefs of the church (Delamater, J. D. Lecture 9/29/14). The sex
negativity of the Christian tradition stems from the philosophies of Stoicism and Neo–Platonism
which both enforce that sex is solely for procreation. (Delamater, 2014, p. 483) The Christian belief
that abstinence is the only moral way to avoid STIs and pregnancy has led to the incorporation of
abstinence–only sex education courses in schools. The myth that abstinence–only sex education
causes teenagers to have less sex has been in question for quite some time. Christians deem that
teaching students about safe sex would lead to an increase in sexual behavior, thus it shouldn't be
discussed. In contrast, people who believe in humanism feel that comprehensive sex education is the
most effective way to inform teenagers about sex (Delamater, 2014, p. 485). Does abstinence–only
sex education cause teenagers to be less sexually active compared to teens that have had a
comprehensive sex education? The hypothesis is that abstinence–only sex education does not cause
teenagers to have less sex when compared to comprehensive sex education. In a comprehensive sex
course, the students would learn that abstinence is the best method for avoiding STIs and pregnancy,
but it would also teach about positive contraceptive use, sexual health, and sexual expression. By

only stresses the importance of abstaining from sex until marriage. Abstinence–only education has

The curricula in these programs do not give students the information they need to have a healthy
sexuality. 75% of teens aged 18 to 19 have little or no knowledge of the contraceptive pill, and 41%
have little or no knowledge of condoms ("Abstinence–Only Education"). This means that when
these teens do engage in sex, they have barely any knowledge on how to protect themselves from
pregnancy and STDs. The curricula in abstinence–only education programs also reinforce harmful,
sexist gender stereotypes. They often emphasize that females dislike sex and that it is their burden to
help tame male's sexual impulses. They also promote the stereotype that women are naturally
submissive and sexually passive, which contributes to the social stigma regarding women's sexuality
and sexual agency. One curriculum teaches that men are sexually aggressive and lack deep
emotions. These programs offer excuses for sexual violence and abuse, and validate victim–blaming
attitudes. One common abstinence–only program is CBAE (Community–Based Abstinence
Education), and its guidelines devalue single motherhood, encourage abstinent young people to
avoid socializing with sexually active peers, and discourage contraceptive use. Abstinence–only
education curricula also have detrimental effects on LGBTQ+ youth. CBAE guidelines require that

Abstinence–Only Sex–Ed
Everyone remembers having to go to a sex–ed class in late middle school or early high school. Most
people remember it as extremely awkward and slightly terrifying. The difference between
comprehensive sex–ed and abstinence only education can be life or death. Comprehensive sex–ed
teaches people about contraception, sexual orientations, which needs to be updated, and how to be
safe in general. Abstinence–only sex–ed basically only teaches to wait to have sexual interactions

Control." This may be correct in the way that as you get older you become less impulsive. This
would cause you to make more clear–headed ideas. This, I believe, is the only correct part of this
argument. Not teaching needed information on contraception and such ideas when you are younger
will have disastrous effects. It would cause more unwanted pregnancies and STIs, just when you are

California just this past summer. The words and those like it, unlike in this paper, were defined and
discussed and also mentioned different methods of this practice. Not only was the subject of BDSM
discussed, but information was also provided about masturbation, orgasms, and sex toys. Many
believe that these topics are too mature for fourteen year old freshmen, which would have been the
target audience. But there are also people who believe that these things are natural, part of life, and
normal for teenagers to be curious about. All parents believe that sex education is necessary;
however, some parents thought that sexual education should teach farther than anatomy, STIs, and
pregnancies because those are the only necessities, in their eyes. This book caused an outrage from
more than a thousand parents who signed a petition to have the book pulled. As of right now, the
school is using the old, outdated book they have been using for years ("Health").
Although the extreme case in Fremont is not representative of the national conversation, people
throughout the country are discussing sex

Should Sex Education Be Taught?
"Teaching only about abstinence is like teaching 'a driver 's education course in which teachers show
students grisly photos of traffic accidents but never tell them to stop at red lights or buckle their seat
belts'" (Wagle). Sex education is often a hot topic of debate within the States, where high school
teens often receive some form of sexual education. However, the quality of this information varies
from state to state and even district to district. Although there are many different definitions, the one
being applied here is that abstinence–based curriculum teaches that the only truly effective way to
prevent sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, and other sex related risks is by not having sex.
This includes severely limited or no information about contraceptives or ways to lessen the spread
of disease. On the other hand, comprehensive sexual education includes information not found in
abstinence curriculum and resources about STDs and prevention, various contraceptive methods,
healthy relationships and rape, and are inclusive towards queer and trans experiences. Sex ed is an
important part of education, and a comprehensive sexual education is critical in both reducing
teenage pregnancies and STDs and promoting health and good choices. Abstinence–based education
is unrealistic, and results in unsafe sex that can cause unplanned pregnancies and STDs. Despite the
required abstinence–based education of many states, it may not apply because many teenagers will

Abstinence-Only vs. Comprehensive Sex Education Essay
Since the HIV/AIDS epidemic began in the U.S. in the early 1980s the issue of sex education for
American youth has had the attention of the nation. There are about 400,000 teen births every year
in the U.S, with about 9 billion in associated public costs. STI contraction in general, as well as teen
pregnancy, have put the subject even more so on the forefront of the nation's leading issues. The
approach and method for proper and effective sex education has been hotly debated. Some believe
that teaching abstinence–only until marriage is the best method while others believe that a more
comprehensive approach, which includes abstinence promotion as well as contraceptive
information, is necessary. Abstinence–only program curriculums disregard ... Show more content on

Other supporters think that sex education should not deviate from other teachings of other health
curricula such as drunk driving, tobacco use, drug use, alcohol consumption, gun use, fighting; all
things which are taught to just not do (Collins, Alagira, and Summers 12–13). They believe that it is
the responsibility of a public institution which serves kids to teach them risk avoidance rather than
harm reduction ("WebMD: Better Information. Better Health"). Many advocates for abstinence–only
education believe that its message is strongly intertwined with traditional values and religious faith;
both of which they claim to have measurable influence in preventing teens from having sex (Collins,
Alagira, and Summers 12–13). Christian conservative women believe that comprehensive sex
education would encourage sexual activity and lesbianism, as well as undercut marriage and create
social decay (Fields 24). Proponents for abstinence–only education believe that the abstinence–only
message has contributed to the decline of adolescent sexual activity as well as negative related
outcomes. In the 1990s there was a decrease in adolescent pregnancy, birth and abortion rates. These
proponents attribute these declining statistics to the abstinence–only message and claim that the
declines cannot be accredited to increased

Comprehensive Sex Education And Comprehensive Sex Education
Around the country views on sex education differ strongly, typically more religiously affiliated
states promote abstinence while liberal states are in favor of comprehensive sex education.
While both abstinence only sex education and comprehensive sex education aim to shield teens
from the possible dangers of sex, they strongly disagree on what information should be taught
and the outcome said information will have on teens.
Many parents have a strong opinion on how much information their children should be taught,
ranging from nothing at all to everything from human anatomy, STD's, gender studies, and sex
education for queer teens. According to an article titled "Comprehensive Sex Education is
Inappropriate and Harmful" some parents believe that their authority is being undermined by
comprehensive programs. Comprehensive programs to encourage the use of contraceptives,
even acknowledging the fact that they can be accessed without parental consent. This has been
heavily debated, some parents believe it is encouraging promiscuity and deceitful behavior
while others believe it is promoting their kids to make safe choices if they are too embarrassed
to ask for their parents permission to get contraceptives. According to an article titled

Sex Education in the U.S. and Japan Essay
How much sexual knowledge adults should give to adolescents has been discussed for decades to
decrease teenage pregnancy and sex related diseases. According to The National Campaign to
prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy (2013), the U.S. has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy
among developed countries, and about sixty eight girls per thousand became pregnant in 2008. To
change this situation, the U.S. provides two kinds of sex education: abstinence–only sex education
and comprehensive sex education. In contrast, Japan has one of the lowest rates among developed
countries. Summing up the birth and abortion dates, at least 34,220 girls became pregnant in 2011
(Japanese Ministry of Health, 2011). Even though Japan has less teen ... Show more content on

It has three features. First, it has been supported by the federal government since 1981 (Santelli, Ott,
Lyon, Rogers, Summers, & Schelifer, 2006). Especially since 1996, the governmental support has
become stronger and has provided a lot of money to the organizations which support abstinence–
only sex education. For example, according to the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (2002), the
federal government provided about $135 million to the family planning programs that support
abstinence–only sex education in 2001. However, instead of giving the strong financial support, the
government set the detailed definitions of abstinence–only sex education and restricted other
information (Santelli, Ott, Lyon, Rogers, Summers, & Schelifer, 2006). Secondly, this program
believes that abstinence until marriage is the best way to protect a teenager's health physically and
psychologically. Therefore, in the program, students learn that being abstinent until marriage is the
only way to protect them from becoming pregnant and having sex between adolescents is harmful
physically and psychologically. They tend to approach their students from the psychological aspect,
since there are actually no scientific date which suggests having sex between adolescents are

that they should get more information about both abstinence and birth control or protection, 4%

Sexuality And Its Effect On Children Essay
Sexuality has always been a taboo topic of discussion in most societies. Whether it is talked about it
casually among friends or for educational reasons, the subject of sex is bound to trigger some
controversy. In contrast, with the exponential growth of technology, Internet, and social media,
sexual images can be found with the click of a mouse. Here lies a great contradiction. If sex is so
easily portrayed in media, why is so hard to talk about? Becoming educated about sexuality and
achieving optimal sexual health and well–being should be lifelong developmental process that
begins at an early age and continues throughout the lifespan. Although parents should be the initial
educators for their children, children also absorb messages about sexuality from many of media
sources. This can potentially leave a confusing and potentially negative perception about the
expectations and reality of sex. To combat such misperceptions, school systems and other
community–based associations are essential. Such programs should be utilized, along side parental
advocacy, to provide ayoung people correct and developmentally appropriate comprehensive sex
education. While it is imperative that parents need to be the primary sex educators for their children,
some parents may lack the support or do not have accurate information to so. As a result, these
parents need have the support and resources from health educators and professionals to be able to

The Benefits Of Abstinence-Only Curriculum
One of the most taboo topics within the American culture is sex. It is considered inappropriate to
speak of such a topic in any situation, especially around teenagers. Even in schools, many students'
education have been censored in order to teach a curriculum that aligns with the core beliefs of
others who may not have the best interests of the students in mind. While the purpose of an
education is to equip a student with knowledge, the information that is currently being given about
sex education is not beneficial because it is focused on an approach that has been proven ineffective.
In order to prepare teenagers for healthier and safer lifestyles, North Carolina students should
receive a more comprehensive sexual education including contraceptives in contrast to the current
at–a–glance abstinence based sexual education that is currently offered to students.
To understand the shortcomings of the current sex education curriculum, one must first examine the
structure of the present system and those who create it. The idea of an abstinence–only curriculum
became a dominant force within the education system in the early 1970's when nearly half of the
states voted to restrict and or abolish sex education. It was not until the mid–1980's and the ... Show

Introduction
Each of the fifty states has the power to implement its own sexual education system, but this may
not always be for the best. In a modern era where youth is engulfed by the Internet and instant
communication and an increasingly liberal media, many adults consider sexual education an
uncomfortable topic to discuss. However, does establishing a comprehensive sexual education
curriculum encourage children and teenagers to engage in dangerous sexual acts that lead to life–
changing consequences? I hypothesize that a comprehensive sexual education proves itself
beneficial in all cases because it keeps children and teenagers informed about the dangers of
sexually transmitted diseases and potential pregnancies as well as the emotional ... Show more

This is crucial considering the STD rates amongst teenagers. Roughly half of the new STD cases are
solely teenagers (aged 15–24) in low–income areas (Kirby, 145). Along with the fear of STDs,
which are still becoming more common, teenage pregnancy rates are also a major fear that seems to
promote the abstinence only education. The United States is among the highest teenage pregnancy

Just say no, or say nothing at all. Either live by the word of the Christian God, or live with disease

nation gives to young people about their private sexuality. Clear concise facts have given way to
horrifying lectures of the fictional evils of sexual behavior that falls outside the lines drawn by the

This concealment of data will only impair young people for whom it is difficult to find accurate

considered too controversial, even though they are the topics most applicable to many students lives.
"As many as one in two school programs do not discuss more controversial topics, such as abortion
and sexual orientation, in their sex education curricula" (American). Adolescents need the whole
story on sexuality; deleting all sections that could perchance, in the remotest context, affront
someone, leaves unanswered questions and a nebulous comprehension of sexuality. Those who

beliefs that parents have high authority and children belong in the private sphere. Within the context
of sex education, childism is a primary factor in programs that place the values of parents and
society over the needs and rights of the child. While including discussions about the importance of
personal and family values in sex education is reasonable, it is unreasonable to completely diminish

By addressing homosexuality only within the context of "promiscuity and disease," most abstinence
programs create an unwelcoming environment for homosexual students ("ACLU Memo" 30). The
best way to promote teenage sexual health is to create a supportive environment with a wealth of
accurate, holistic information. If students do not receive accurate information about sexual health
from reliable institutions such as schools, they will find such information, albeit inaccurate,
elsewhere. Adolescents often rely upon peers and mass media for sexual information (Igras et al.
558), which poses problems because peers are equally uninformed and the media presents distorted
or inaccurate portrayals of sexual activity. Like abstinence programs, television, movies, and the
Internet perpetuate gender stereotypes, but by demonstrating how the genders are supposed to act in
sexual situations rather than teaching about it (Kittleson and Howard–Barr 73). Additionally, the
media includes abundant sexual references without the necessary health information to back them

The Pros And Cons Of Sex Education
There is a sixteen year old boy that has been dating a girl of the same age for approximately two
years now. As sixteen year olds they proclaimed themselves eligible for sexual activities. They
continued to date and from the outside looking in they were just an average high school couple.
Until, one morning the young girl had found out she was pregnant. For most adults that are married
this would be outstanding news, but for two sixteen year olds this news was horrifying.
They start to question everything possible. How can this be true? What will other students think of
us? What will my parents say? What will we do? These questions are great to ask before they
consent to each other, not after when it's too late. Their lives as they knew it were in for a dramatic
change. The boy had to quit football and baseball to take on a part time job to provide support for
the baby. He would have to finish high school on top of that as well. For the girl she participated in
the Fall Musical. She could kiss that goodbye along with all of her music scholarships. A part time
job, school and taking care of the little one was her main goal now. All states within America require

Should Sex Education Be Taught? Abstinence Only Education?
Sexual education in schools has become a highly controversial topic over the past few years. Some
people believe students should be taught abstinence–only education, while others believe students
need the full on "sex talk". While the sex education controversy may seem silly, it is very important
that students receive the most efficient education possible. When it comes to education parents want
their children to receive the most effective kind. This is also very true in terms of sex education. Sex
education is very debatable right now as to whether students should be taught abstinence–only
education or comprehensive sex education. Sexual education is a highly debatable topic, but many
believe the information taught to students should be abstinence–only. Abstinence–only education
has been put in place in order to educate students about the social, mental, and physical benefits of
resisting from all sexual activity. It emphasizes the unsafe impacts of participating in sexual activity
before marriage and having casual sex. It also promotes the idea that sexual abstinence is the only
way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. Abstinence education only permits the
discussion of contraception and condoms in terms of failure in order to utterly discourage casual sex
(Wilgoren, 1). Along with teaching the physical dangers of sex, abstinence education also teaches
the mental dangers of sex (Abstinence–Only Education, 1). Sex has many risks and dangers that are

Modern era sex education programs in the United States began in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a

effectiveness of contraception, other curricula refuted these ideas thus creating a conflict about sex
education in the U.S. Sex education in the U.S is divided into two categories: abstinence–only and
comprehensive, the former being the most implemented among states nationwide. Abstinence–only

Should Sex Education Be Incorporated Into Public Schools?
For Sex Education in Public Schools
An observation of the prevalent television programs and popular topics broadcasted in the media
often depict teenagers with an air of promiscuity. Is teenage pregnancy really an uncontrolled
epidemic, as depicted in shows such as "16 and Pregnant"? Are a vast majority of teenagers
exchanging racy photos of their bodies with each other? If so, are teenagers acting out because of
too much sex education? Or is the outbreak of hyper–sexualized activity linked to lack of formal
knowledge regarding sex? These are valid questions when contemplating the teaching of sex in
public high schools across the United States. Sex education should be incorporated into the public
school's curriculum because it would dismiss the myths that continue to circulate, may address the
embarrassing questions thought of by many, and holds the teen more responsible for their choices.
While teenagers globally encounter the discovery of sexuality, the matter of sex education is most
necessary in the United States. With sex used as a tool to sell and oftentimes depicted unrealistically
in television, teenagers have a skewed view of the reality. Furthermore, the United States has the
highest birth rate and one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections amongst the
developed countries. Sex education is necessary, however whether it be comprehensive or
abstinence– only education is debatable. Abstinence only education teaches to delay sex until

Comprehensive Sexual Abstinence Education : A...
Sex is considered a private thing not to be discussed in this day and age. However, with the age that
people start having consensual sex getting younger and younger each day. There is clearly a need to
have a straight dialogue with young people of each new generation about sex, the dangers, and
repercussions of having sex before marriage. The type of sex education we are proposing is a
comprehensive sex education. In this paper we will outline the best way we found to incorporate a
comprehensive sexual abstinence education into your school, what is it, and why we think it's
important to have a secure sex education program.
Comprehensive sex education is teaching that having sex is natural and healthy. When teaching they
focus on the ways to have safe and smart sex. Comprehensive sex education teaches that the only
way to effectually avoid STDs and pregnancy is to abstain from sex altogether, it also teaches on
other topics related to sex like relationships (Advocates for Youth, 2008). This type of education is
funded through things like Community based abstinence education or funded through the state or a
private fund. This education is taught usually in community buildings such as churches, schools, and
also medical offices like planned parenthood. Although it is most known for its services for women
planned parenthood also provides sex education to help prevent STDs and teen pregnancy.

By the prohibition of the discussion of the certain topic, there have been less students learning about
the topics such as pregnancy prevention and STD prevention than students have in the 1990s. At this
time, there was around 750,000 adolescents were experiencing an unintended pregnancy, along with
every one in four sexually active teens contracted a sexually transmitted disease annually. It goes far
as some states trying and having succeeding in censorship or distort information for political
purposes, "people become the instruments or tools of the state policies that deprive them of the
knowledge and info necessary to make and implement decisions about the reproductive and to
express the sexuality safely. It thus involves the state control over some of the most basic elements
of what it means to be human." (L.R Freeman, Censorship and Manipulation of Reproductive Health

Sex Education In The United States, Thailand
Introduction
Sex education is still treated as taboo in the modern world. The roots of this vary from culture to
culture, but the impacts remain the same; the prevalent rape culture that persists around the world,
STI pandemics, sky–high teen pregnancy rates, and the LGBT community being at a much higher
risk of contracting diseases and being targeted for hate crimes (Sanoff, 1). However, what remains
unacceptable is when this prohibition seeps into governmental actions, especially governments with
an emphasis on the separation of church and state.
In this extended essay, the question investigated is to what extent have cultural values affected sex
education in some countries causing such a disparity between countries with a non–existent or
abstinence–only sex education curriculum to countries with advanced, progressive sex education.
The countries discussed will be the United States, the Netherlands, and Thailand. The essay will go
over how these nations differ in their approach to the curriculum as well as how to combat customs
that impede it from occurring. To what extent have cultural values affected government decisions
regarding sex education in schools in the United States, Thailand, and the Netherlands, and how
could this apply to other nations across the globe? Source: ("The World Factbook:

Teenage Pregnancies And Std Contraction

  • 1. Teenage Pregnancies And Std Contraction Compared to every other first world country, America is the highest ranking in rates of teenage pregnancies and STD contraction. What is it about the US and its approach to sexual education that produces such numbers amongst its youth? The prevailing sexuality education system in the US is abstinence–only sex education programs. Abstinence–only–until–marriage education in schools is highly destructive to its students in multiple ways. Abstinence–only sexuality education does more harm to students than good, and is shown to have adverse effects on its students. The CDC Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance study showed that 10% of youth in the US have never been formally taught about HIV or AIDS, the majority being students in abstinence–only programs. (as cited in Mallone and Rodriguez) With abstinence–until–marriage programs failing to provide vital information on STDs, millions of teeangers are at higher risk to engage in unsafe sexual activity. Bruckner and Bearman studies conclude that 88% of teens who pledge abstinence break that pledge, and of that 88%, ⅓ less likely to use contraception. (as cited in Taverners) Abstinence–only education does not only fail to enforce its ideals, but also fails to educate its students properly in comprehensive sexuality aspects. This lack of proper education can come with drastic consequences, resulting from a huge lack of vital information. A study conducted by Henry Watman found that "80% of federally funded abstinence until marriage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Pros And Cons Of Sex Education Texas is reputable for implementing abstinence only sex education. About 60% of public schools only teach this curriculum (Howell). This leaves thousands of students of various ages with an altered view of sex and insufficient information on safe sex practice and contraception. This program has also proved itself ineffective because Texas ranks fifth highest nationally in teen birth rates with 41 births per 1,000 women (Howell). 4 out of 5 adolescent pregnancies are unintended" (Gelfond, 597).Abstinence only programs have failed because they do not prevent or even educate students about safe sex practices, contraception, and Texas still remains in the forerunner for highest rates of STDs and teen pregnancy. Teen pregnancy rate is at an all–time high because of the lack of proper sex education. Southern states, like Texas, teach sex education in a traditional manner that does not work. In the curriculum students are taught about sex on the principle of if you have sex, you die. In 1982, the Texas government introduced the Adolescence Family Act which lead to funding for abstinence–only and abstinence–only–until–marriage programs (hereafter, collectively called abstinence–only) in 1996 (Howell, 2). According to Advocates for Youth, "This grew exponentially with the enactment of welfare reform (P.L. 104–193)." The law contained a mandate of $50 million per year to fund abstinence–only programs. In fact, the law amended the Maternal and Child Health Block Grant legislation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Hiv And Its Effects On The United States Half of all new human immunodeficiency virus, also known as HIV infections in the United States and two thirds of all sexually transmitted diseases (STD) occur among young people under the age of 25 (Starkman, Rajani). It's estimated that by the end of high school, nearly two thirds of American's youth are sexually active, and one in five has had four or more sexual partners (Starkman, Rajani). Despite these alarming statistics, less than half of all public schools in the United States offer information on how to obtain contraceptives and most schools teach "abstinence only" education (Starkman, Rajani). Even more alarmingly there is little evidence that abstinence only curriculums are successful in encouraging teenagers from delaying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Required academic programs can help adolescents develop a sense of embodiment and sexual agency, and cultivate the social, emotional, and cognitive skills they need to make healthy decisions and engage in fulfilling relationships (Sanoff). For every rape victim there is a rapist, and though it's hard to say what causes someone to rape, society must start the transition from saying "Don't get raped." to "Don't rape." Sexuality education and youth development, if utilized properly can work as a cohesive tool in helping adolescents understand the gravity of their sexual actions. In John Willey's book 'The Trauma of Sexual Assault" he dedicates an entire chapter to stereotypes in rape culture. One such stereotype being that "real mean, can't be raped" as well as "rapist have a biological uncontrollable desire" both of these are examples of such topics that should be discussed with children (Willey, 10–12). Society should be supporting the idea that it is never the victims fault, regardless of gender and they should also discuss the topic of mental health. By addressing these stereotypes it opens the door to open conversations and awareness. Youth development is about nourishing the strengths of youth, building life skills, and providing an open environment to discuss questions and concerns. One common reason many are ... • 7. The Effectiveness Of Abstinence Only Sex Education Everyone has their own way of raising children. This sometimes causes problems while deciding on what children should learn in school. A child's upbringing is vital in determining what they will grow up to be. It is hard enough to raise a child, but it is even harder when you have to watch society as well. In today's age there are a lot of things that parents cannot shield their child from seeing that used to be easy to hide. So much can be easily accessed through the touch of a finger. Which is why children need more education on what is happening in the world now. Schools are the safest place to talk to children about how the times have changed. While some schools cater to religion being taught the same thing is not set in place for sex ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Utrecht, Netherlands sexual education begins as early as age 4. The Dutch Sexuality Institute, the entity behind the curriculum encourages students age 4 and up to have open conversations regarding sex, love, and relationships. The Netherlands government have even made it a law for all primary students to have some form of sexual education. The teachers mandated to enact this curriculum have administrative freedom as long as they include key concepts such as sexual assertiveness and sexual diversity. These key concepts were chosen with hopes that it will enrich the students with the skills to later on protect them against sexual coercion, intimidation, and abuse. Thanks to social media there have been negative connotations in regards to sexual activity. One of the curriculums main goals is to show students that sexuality can consisted of intimacy, respect, and safety. Melker says "The system allows for flexibility in how it's taught. But it must address certain core principles – among them, sexual diversity and sexual assertiveness. That means encouraging respect for all sexual preferences and helping students develop skills to protect against sexual coercion, intimidation and abuse" (Melker, 2015). The Dutch's approach to sexual education have become the center of attention across the globe, and they have not hesitated upon bragging about the results yielded from ... • 9. Should Abstinence Only Sex Education? When I was in the eighth grade, I remember attending a sex education course. At the young impressionable age of fourteen, I listened quietly as the lecturer showed us grotesque pictures of sexually transmitted infections and warned us that abstinence was the only effective way to not get pregnant. At the end of lecture, everyone at the assembly was handed a little card that read, "Virginity Pledge" and we were all required to sign them. Looking back on this memory, I am appalled by the severe lack of scientific foundation of the lecture, the use of misinterpreted statistics, and the use of peer pressure in requiring students to sign pledge cards. Many students my age probably have a similar experience with this type of sex education, which is referred to as abstinence–only sex education. Students deserve a better sex education than what the abstinence– only sex education programs provide. Abstinence–only sex education should be removed from all U.S. schools and replaced with comprehensive sexuality education. Curriculum for abstinence–only sex education is restricted to heterosexuality and bares no mention homosexuality or asexuality due to the program's affiliations with religious groups and their morals and beliefs. Abstinence–only sex education strives to prevent teens from having sex before marriage. Marriage in these programs refers to heterosexual marriage, which alienates homosexual individuals. Homosexuality is usually only mentioned during discussions of AIDS and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Sex Education Is More Beneficial Than Abstinence Only... All over the world in classrooms, households, churches and sometimes in every day life sex education is a topic on people's minds. Whether this topic is taught in detail rather than in avoidance of the action is the debate we need to have. It is almost impossible to go all of our lives without being exposed to some level of education of sexual activity. Sometimes that education is associated with positivity and other times it is comparable to the sin of all sins. Sex education is more beneficial than abstinence only education because those taught to avoid it have no information on how to safely go about it when their urges surface, as well associating fear of sin and holding them to pledges of virginity can harm young adult's decision ... She also made it very clear that she does not dispute her actions, but instead fully realizes them and wishes to use them as a learning opportunity for her kids, and adolescents around the world. Anyone who wishes to pass on information to another person, similar to the work that teachers do, will always delve into the information they feel is most important, but what is truly important can be perceived in many different ways. The safety issues that arise with abstinence only education are numerous. Young adults will not know anything about the action itself let alone the precautionary steps that every person should take before engaging in intercourse. It is almost impossible for teens to know the countless risks that threaten them when a condom is not in play. As well they have no idea how permanent a lot of those risks are. In abstinence only education it can only be hoped that they have heard something about sexually transmitted diseases, or pregnancy rates in relation to sexual activity and if they have this almost always would be very surface level information. With this situation being setup young teens, who will no doubt face their sexual urges during a very dynamic time in their bodily development, will then go in blind and act on impulse rather than accompanying their urges with cautious thought. • 13. Abstinence-Only And Comprehensive Sex Education In The... Overview Sex education, most commonly known as family life, is any information about sex and sexual relationships taught to maturing young people as a part of a school's curriculum. Currently, there is a constant political and ideological debate in the United States over the merits of abstinence–only and comprehensive sex education programs in the teaching of our youth. Abstinence only sex education has been the primary sex education taught in the United States. Although different in their approach, the overall goal is to help them build a foundation to be able to make healthy informed decisions as they mature into adults. The objectives of sex education programs are to help adolescents develop a positive view of sexuality, body image and make responsible decisions in relationships (Knowles, 2012). Ultimately, any sex education should be a partnership between parents, guardians and school personnel. However, in recent years, a large amount of information about sexuality is acquired through friends, music, books and the media instead of from their parents. For some individuals, ... In states where abstinence–only sexuality education is very strict, there is no data to support decreasing incidences of teen pregnancies. In fact, teen pregnancies rates are almost twenty percent higher in states where abstinence–only education is heavily stressed compared to states with no mention of abstinence at all. Because teen pregnancy rates and stricter abstinence– only curriculums are directly proportional, this would indicate abstinence–only education is not having the desired effect on students that educators are hoping to have. Comprehensive sexuality education could possibly result in a decline in teen pregnancy rates by providing factual information about pregnancy and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Sex Education Is An Important, Emotional And Controversial Sex education is an important, emotional and controversial topic to teach youth in today's world. The question is, what is the best information, and the best way to teach them? Comprehensive sex education is teaching teens how to practice safe sex, providing teens with types of protection, and how to use it, as well as services and resources available to help them in making decisions to practice safe sex. Abstinence–only programs teach teens to not have sex, or anything "arousing" until marriage, and the real world fear of contracting STDs. Claims, Assumptions, and Support (Melissa) Abstinence versus Comprehensive Sex education seems to be the same arguments as over the past twenty years. On one side of the argument are the supporters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Comprehensive Sex education programs which teach abstinence followed by sexual safety is better than abstinence–only programs because it is a realistic and effective approach not to confuse students. Emphasis on abstinence and the use of protection for those who choose to have sex showed convincing evidence of positive influence on teens ' sexual behavior, including delaying initiation of sex and increasing condom and contraceptive use. Research shows teaching abstinence alone has no effect on delaying teens starting sexual activities this would give the recipients the best of both worlds. A balanced sex education program should be taught to help students with decision– making skills to help them through their entire life. Types of Arguments (Laura) The types of arguments seen in the articles are evaluation and proposal. On both sides of the argument, people claim either abstinence–only programs or comprehensive sex education are good, bad, better, best or indifferent. Some argue that having both programs in one curriculum is best. For example, in the article "Key Questions for Consideration as a New Federal Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative in Implemented" by Heather Boonstra, Boonstra claims, sexual education programs that teach abstinence followed by sexual safety are better than abstinence–only programs because it is a realistic and effective approach that is not confusing to students. • 17. Sexual Education Vs Comprehensive Sex Education Sex education in the United States has many different opinions on the most effective ways of teaching. Social trends, public health concerns, politics and various controversies have all, at different times and in different ways, affected the substance and teaching of sex education (Future of Sex Education). 15 percent of Americans believe abstinence–only sex education should teach only about abstinence and nothing else, however 46 percent believe abstinence and ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies STD's should also be taught (Future of Sex Education). President Barack Obama diverted funds from the abstinence–only programs, to provide medically–accurate and age– appropriate information to youth who have already become sexually active. • 19. The Most Effective Method Of Sex Education Tory Waver Scott Macrae Section – 0266 The Most Effective Method of Sex Education INTRODUCTION Sex is a touchy subject and administrators all over the country have spent years trying to figure out the best way to teach their minors about it. Sex education in America is crucial because we are known for our high rates of pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among teenagers. However, things like religion, morals, and rights are factors that have swayed the education system making it harder to determine the "right" way to teach sex education. There are two methods of which sex education can be taught – abstinence only or comprehensively. For my ethnography project, I chose to examine the difference in effectiveness between the two forms of sex education. I interviewed individuals from younger and older generation to find out the changes in sex education from the past to now and to determine what factors have led to the reduction of teen pregnancies and STI's in America, thus helping me find out what methods are more successful. BACKGROUND America, being one of the leading countries for high rates of teen pregnancies and STI's, has ensured that every state is somehow involved in sex education for students. Each educational institution however, has its own method of carrying out that education meaning that the effects vary virtually across every school. In terms of abstinence–only and comprehensive sex education, both sides argue that their approach is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In "The Case for Rights Education Alongside Sex Education", Seth Abramson states that the reason sex education is present in the majority of all American schools is because sex matters. He makes an in–depth point about knowing how to handle oneself during sexual or assault encounters. Abramson supports his point of ''sex matters'' by outlining that lack of age appropriate sexual education has proven to cause deadly STD's and even death. Many counter arguments are listed for the importance of sexual education including victims of sexual assault changing their lifestyles in order to protect oneself. Abramson states that rights and sexual education only makes sense if they are coupled with efforts to enhance many of the criminal justice system 's practices. Seth agrees that not all children benefit from sexual education; however, attempting to better a person's life choices or even save a person's life is more than worth the cost. Don't have sex in the missionary position, don't have sex standing up, just don't do it, OK, promise? OK, now everybody take some rubbers. . . . At your age, you're going to have a lot of urges. You're going to want to take off your clothes, and touch each other. But if you do touch each other, you *will* get chlamydia... and die." Actually, many states are paying more than ever for their students to receive an abstinence–based education. This leads to the next problem with abstinence–only education in America; cost. In 2015, $25 million in additional funding was granted for Title V, an 18–year–old federal program that doles out matching grants to states that agree to implement abstinence–only programs(thinkprogress). This program is not only harming the students, but also the tax payers! • 25. Abstinence Only Sexual Education Vs. Inclusive Sex... Abstinence–Only Sexual Education vs. Inclusive Sexual Education In 1981, the Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA) was signed into law by President Reagan. Through the act, the federal government first invested in sexual education programs, all of which encouraged "chastity and self–discipline." After this came the Title V abstinence–only–until–marriage program, which was created in 1996 as part of the welfare reform legislation. Finally, the Community–Based Abstinence Education (CBAE), was created in 2000. Now, for over three decades, people are still debating whether the original approach of teaching abstinence should be kept or if schools should go into further detail in teaching how to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and infections from happening. I believe that all schools should teach an inclusive form of sexual education. I believe that teaching abstinence is not working in the slightest because the rate of teenagers who are sexually active is gradually increasing. Since teens are participating in sexual intercourse, we need to teach them how to have sex safely. Schools need to teach a form of sexual education that will fully cover how to prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and infections. The abstinence–only– until–marriage programs need to be replaced because they contain inaccuracies and flaws, the popular opinion of the American society differs from our state policies, and the government and taxpayer's money could be better ... While abstinence–only sex education discusses solely abstinence, comprehensive sex education provides information about various areas of human sexuality and methods to practice safe and healthy sexual behaviors. To fully understand the controversy surrounding comprehensive sexual education, one need to obtain knowledge about the history of sex education in the United States, legislation, class content, and the effects of sexual education policies on student populations. The first time that sexual education was recognized as an essential part of a national education curriculum was in 1892 by the National Education Association. There were many times in American history that showed progression in comprehensive sexual education and distribution of birth control until the 1970's. In 1975, twenty state governments voted to place restrictions or completely ban sexual education completely. The Adolescent Family Life Act was passed in 1981 to fund programs that promote staying sexually abstinent until marriage. Fifteen years later in 1996, Congress funded $250 million for abstinence until marriage programs. However in 2008, half of the fifty states rejected renewal of government funding of abstinence–only programs because of new research suggesting that only teaching abstinence did not impede sexual behavior in teenagers. ... With such activity comes a high price. Studies have shown that there has been a significant rise in the number of children with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), emotional and psychological problems, and out–of–wedlock childbearing. Sex has always been discussed publically by the media, television shows, music and occasionally by parents and teachers in educational context. Teens hear them, and as the saying goes, "monkey see, monkey do", they are tempted to experiment with it. Programs that encourage abstinence have become a vital part of school systems in the US. These programs are usually referred to as abstinence–only or value–based programs while other programs are called as safer–sex, comprehensive, secular or abstinence–plus programs which on the contrary promote the usage of effective contraception. Although abstinence–only and safer–sex programs disagree with one another, their core values and stand on the aims of sex education is to help teens develop problem–solving skills and the skill of good decision–making. They believe that adolescents will be better prepared to "act responsibly in the heat of the moment" (Silva). Most programs that have been currently implemented in the US have seen a delay in the initiation of sex among teens which proves to be a positive and desirable outcome (Silva). Statistics from recent studies suggest that only 13% of U.S. teens have ever had sex by the age of 15. But by the age of 19, seven in ten teens of both sexes have had sex. Between 1995 and 2006– 2008, the percentage of teens aged 15–17 who had ever engaged in sexual intercourse declined from 38% to 28%. Among teens aged 18–19, it declined from 68% in 1995 to 60% in 2006–2008. The pregnancy rate among young women has declined steadily from 117 pregnancies per 1,000 women aged 15–19 in 1990 to 70 per 1,000 in 2005. • 33. Should Abstinence Only Sex Education? Considering that religion is Americas #1 social institution, it is no surprise that the most widely used sex education approach follows the beliefs of the church (Delamater, J. D. Lecture 9/29/14). The sex negativity of the Christian tradition stems from the philosophies of Stoicism and Neo–Platonism which both enforce that sex is solely for procreation. (Delamater, 2014, p. 483) The Christian belief that abstinence is the only moral way to avoid STIs and pregnancy has led to the incorporation of abstinence–only sex education courses in schools. The myth that abstinence–only sex education causes teenagers to have less sex has been in question for quite some time. Christians deem that teaching students about safe sex would lead to an increase in sexual behavior, thus it shouldn't be discussed. In contrast, people who believe in humanism feel that comprehensive sex education is the most effective way to inform teenagers about sex (Delamater, 2014, p. 485). Does abstinence–only sex education cause teenagers to be less sexually active compared to teens that have had a comprehensive sex education? The hypothesis is that abstinence–only sex education does not cause teenagers to have less sex when compared to comprehensive sex education. In a comprehensive sex course, the students would learn that abstinence is the best method for avoiding STIs and pregnancy, but it would also teach about positive contraceptive use, sexual health, and sexual expression. If so, you are more educated than more than 40% of teenagers in the United States ("Abstinence–Only Education"). This is because more than half of the states that mandate sex education require it to be abstinence only education, which is sex education that emits important information about contraception and healthy sexuality and instead only stresses the importance of abstaining from sex until marriage. Abstinence–only education has inaccurate, discriminatory, and stereotype–advancing information and teaching it to students is ineffective and harmful to their health; all states should adopt a more comprehensive curriculum that teaches students all the options and helps them make well–informed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The curricula in these programs do not give students the information they need to have a healthy sexuality. 75% of teens aged 18 to 19 have little or no knowledge of the contraceptive pill, and 41% have little or no knowledge of condoms ("Abstinence–Only Education"). This means that when these teens do engage in sex, they have barely any knowledge on how to protect themselves from pregnancy and STDs. The curricula in abstinence–only education programs also reinforce harmful, sexist gender stereotypes. They often emphasize that females dislike sex and that it is their burden to help tame male's sexual impulses. They also promote the stereotype that women are naturally submissive and sexually passive, which contributes to the social stigma regarding women's sexuality and sexual agency. One curriculum teaches that men are sexually aggressive and lack deep emotions. These programs offer excuses for sexual violence and abuse, and validate victim–blaming attitudes. One common abstinence–only program is CBAE (Community–Based Abstinence Education), and its guidelines devalue single motherhood, encourage abstinent young people to avoid socializing with sexually active peers, and discourage contraceptive use. This may be correct in the way that as you get older you become less impulsive. This would cause you to make more clear–headed ideas. This, I believe, is the only correct part of this argument. Not teaching needed information on contraception and such ideas when you are younger will have disastrous effects. Introduction The following words were shown and defined in a textbook: BDSM, bondage, dom/domme, sub, top, bottom, switches. These words, which are related to the sexual practice of BDSM, happened to be presented in Your Health Today, a health textbook that was proposed to be used in Fremont, California just this past summer. The words and those like it, unlike in this paper, were defined and discussed and also mentioned different methods of this practice. Not only was the subject of BDSM discussed, but information was also provided about masturbation, orgasms, and sex toys. Many believe that these topics are too mature for fourteen year old freshmen, which would have been the target audience. But there are also people who believe that these things are natural, part of life, and normal for teenagers to be curious about. All parents believe that sex education is necessary; however, some parents thought that sexual education should teach farther than anatomy, STIs, and pregnancies because those are the only necessities, in their eyes. This book caused an outrage from more than a thousand parents who signed a petition to have the book pulled. As of right now, the school is using the old, outdated book they have been using for years ("Health"). • 44. Should Sex Education Be Taught? "Teaching only about abstinence is like teaching 'a driver 's education course in which teachers show students grisly photos of traffic accidents but never tell them to stop at red lights or buckle their seat belts'" (Wagle). Sex education is often a hot topic of debate within the States, where high school teens often receive some form of sexual education. However, the quality of this information varies from state to state and even district to district. Although there are many different definitions, the one being applied here is that abstinence–based curriculum teaches that the only truly effective way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, and other sex related risks is by not having sex. This includes severely limited or no information about contraceptives or ways to lessen the spread of disease. On the other hand, comprehensive sexual education includes information not found in abstinence curriculum and resources about STDs and prevention, various contraceptive methods, healthy relationships and rape, and are inclusive towards queer and trans experiences. Sex ed is an important part of education, and a comprehensive sexual education is critical in both reducing teenage pregnancies and STDs and promoting health and good choices. Abstinence–based education is unrealistic, and results in unsafe sex that can cause unplanned pregnancies and STDs. STI contraction in general, as well as teen pregnancy, have put the subject even more so on the forefront of the nation's leading issues. The approach and method for proper and effective sex education has been hotly debated. Many advocates for abstinence–only education believe that its message is strongly intertwined with traditional values and religious faith; both of which they claim to have measurable influence in preventing teens from having sex (Collins, Alagira, and Summers 12–13). Christian conservative women believe that comprehensive sex education would encourage sexual activity and lesbianism, as well as undercut marriage and create social decay (Fields 24). Proponents for abstinence–only education believe that the abstinence–only message has contributed to the decline of adolescent sexual activity as well as negative related outcomes. • 54. Sexuality And Its Effect On Children Essay Sexuality has always been a taboo topic of discussion in most societies. Whether it is talked about it casually among friends or for educational reasons, the subject of sex is bound to trigger some controversy. In contrast, with the exponential growth of technology, Internet, and social media, sexual images can be found with the click of a mouse. Here lies a great contradiction. If sex is so easily portrayed in media, why is so hard to talk about? Becoming educated about sexuality and achieving optimal sexual health and well–being should be lifelong developmental process that begins at an early age and continues throughout the lifespan. Although parents should be the initial educators for their children, children also absorb messages about sexuality from many of media sources. This can potentially leave a confusing and potentially negative perception about the expectations and reality of sex. To combat such misperceptions, school systems and other community–based associations are essential. Such programs should be utilized, along side parental advocacy, to provide ayoung people correct and developmentally appropriate comprehensive sex education. It is considered inappropriate to speak of such a topic in any situation, especially around teenagers. Even in schools, many students' education have been censored in order to teach a curriculum that aligns with the core beliefs of others who may not have the best interests of the students in mind. While the purpose of an education is to equip a student with knowledge, the information that is currently being given about sex education is not beneficial because it is focused on an approach that has been proven ineffective. In order to prepare teenagers for healthier and safer lifestyles, North Carolina students should receive a more comprehensive sexual education including contraceptives in contrast to the current at–a–glance abstinence based sexual education that is currently offered to students. In schools, administrators are removing information on contraceptives from textbooks and censoring sexuality questions. Experts on HIV/AIDS prevention are also tightly regulated on what they can speak about. "In 1999, one–quarter of sex education teachers said they were prohibited from teaching about contraceptives" (Santelli). Not only is the government restricting scientists from educating factual evidence, school systems are restricting teacher from doing their jobs, which is to teach facts not ... • 68. Should Sex Education Be Taught? Abstinence Only Education? Sexual education in schools has become a highly controversial topic over the past few years. Some people believe students should be taught abstinence–only education, while others believe students need the full on "sex talk". While the sex education controversy may seem silly, it is very important that students receive the most efficient education possible. When it comes to education parents want their children to receive the most effective kind. This is also very true in terms of sex education. Sex education is very debatable right now as to whether students should be taught abstinence–only education or comprehensive sex education. Sexual education is a highly debatable topic, but many believe the information taught to students should be abstinence–only. Abstinence–only education has been put in place in order to educate students about the social, mental, and physical benefits of resisting from all sexual activity. It emphasizes the unsafe impacts of participating in sexual activity before marriage and having casual sex. It also promotes the idea that sexual abstinence is the only way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. Abstinence education only permits the discussion of contraception and condoms in terms of failure in order to utterly discourage casual sex (Wilgoren, 1). Along with teaching the physical dangers of sex, abstinence education also teaches the mental dangers of sex (Abstinence–Only Education, 1). Sex has many risks and dangers that are not ... • 70. Abstinence-Only Vs Comprehensive Sex Education Research Modern era sex education programs in the United States began in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a result of the AIDS/HIV epidemic. With the introduction of curricula teaching safe sex and the effectiveness of contraception, other curricula refuted these ideas thus creating a conflict about sex education in the U.S. Sex education in the U.S is divided into two categories: abstinence–only and comprehensive, the former being the most implemented among states nationwide. ("Comprehensive Sex Education vs. Abstinence–Only–Until–Marriage–Programs") Comprehensive education focuses on giving student options on how to manage if they do choose to have sex. As the average age at which Americans start having sex drops, teaching students about how to prevent or deal with sexually transmitted diseases and avoid unplanned pregnancy becomes increasingly important. ("Sex Education Promotes Understanding and Safety") 34% of sexually active students said they didn't use a condom the last time they had sex, which is what increases the odds of getting an STD or becoming ... • 72. Should Sex Education Be Incorporated Into Public Schools? For Sex Education in Public Schools An observation of the prevalent television programs and popular topics broadcasted in the media often depict teenagers with an air of promiscuity. Is teenage pregnancy really an uncontrolled epidemic, as depicted in shows such as "16 and Pregnant"? Are a vast majority of teenagers exchanging racy photos of their bodies with each other? If so, are teenagers acting out because of too much sex education? Or is the outbreak of hyper–sexualized activity linked to lack of formal knowledge regarding sex? These are valid questions when contemplating the teaching of sex in public high schools across the United States. Sex education should be incorporated into the public school's curriculum because it would dismiss the myths that continue to circulate, may address the embarrassing questions thought of by many, and holds the teen more responsible for their choices. While teenagers globally encounter the discovery of sexuality, the matter of sex education is most necessary in the United States. With sex used as a tool to sell and oftentimes depicted unrealistically in television, teenagers have a skewed view of the reality. Furthermore, the United States has the highest birth rate and one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections amongst the developed countries. Sex education is necessary, however whether it be comprehensive or abstinence– only education is debatable. Abstinence only education teaches to delay sex until marriage to ... • 78. Sex Education In The United States, Thailand Introduction Sex education is still treated as taboo in the modern world. The roots of this vary from culture to culture, but the impacts remain the same; the prevalent rape culture that persists around the world, STI pandemics, sky–high teen pregnancy rates, and the LGBT community being at a much higher risk of contracting diseases and being targeted for hate crimes (Sanoff, 1). However, what remains unacceptable is when this prohibition seeps into governmental actions, especially governments with an emphasis on the separation of church and state. In this extended essay, the question investigated is to what extent have cultural values affected sex education in some countries causing such a disparity between countries with a non–existent or abstinence–only sex education curriculum to countries with advanced, progressive sex education. The countries discussed will be the United States, the Netherlands, and Thailand. The essay will go over how these nations differ in their approach to the curriculum as well as how to combat customs that impede it from occurring. To what extent have cultural values affected government decisions regarding sex education in schools in the United States, Thailand, and the Netherlands, and how could this apply to other nations across the globe?
