2. Digital Technology
“Technology… the knack of so
arranging the world that we don’t
have to experience it.”
Max Frisch
“Technology is the campfire around
which we tell our stories.”
Laurie Anderson
3. Digital Technology
Definition: Finding, analysing, creating, communicating, and using
information in a digital context through programming and digital
media tools and software.
Use of Digital Technology in AS Coursework:
• Software – InDesign and Photoshop
• DSLRs – Digital cameras used in photo shoot
4. Creativity
“Creativity is seeing what
everyone else has seen, and
thinking what no one else
has thought.”
– Einstein, quoted in Creativity, Design and Business Performance
5. Creativity
My personal creativity for
creating the magazine came
from taking several
stereotypes and conventions
and combining them to
create a new magazine. For
example, I chose to use a
band as my cover stars
because the Indie genre
generally idolises bands
more than artists. Also, as
social networking is such an
important part of making a
successful magazine, I
placed emphasis on this
with relevant tweets on
every page and the band’s
Instagram.
6. Research and Planning
“By failing to prepare, you are
preparing to fail.”
Benjamin Franklin
“Someone's sitting in the shade today
because someone planted a tree a long
time ago.”
Warren Buffett
7. Research and Planning
Most important/useful
research:
Representation of Indie Pop – gave me
an indication of how I should portray my
cover stars in both the pictures (costume,
poses etc.) and in the article (attitudes to
music etc.)
Most important/useful
planning:
Audience Profile – allowed me to focus
my ideas on who I was ultimately
targeting the magazine at. Gave me a
clear idea of what the brand should
represent.
Moodboard – early on the process of
creating the magazine, this gave me a
clear visual picture of what sort of
magazine I intended to create.
8. Post Production
“I love editing. It's one of my favorite
parts about filmmaking.”
Steven Spielberg
Definition: In both photography and film,
post-production is the process that takes
place after shooting ends. Usually involves
editing/manipulating the raw
footage/images from the production
process.
9. Post Production
Image manipulation in Photoshop
Cropped long shot
image to close up
Black and white &
high contrast
Used burn tool to
darken line
around eyes to
create appearance
of eyeliner
Used burn tool on
lips to create
appearance of
lipstick
Used smudge and
blur tools to
smooth skin and
hide blemishes
10. Post Production
Cut out from
studio
background
Cut out
individuals
from the
image and
moved closer
together
11. Using Conventions from Real
World Texts
Convention definition: The way in which
something is typically done. The ‘norm’.
Using conventions in magazines:
The research collected from existing front covers, contents pages and double
page spreads meant that I could identify conventions in those magazines and
implement the things I had identified in my own magazine. This made my
magazine look more professional.
12. Using Conventions from Real
World Texts
Advertising the album
with artwork at the end of
article
Arrows to indicate the
article continues onto the
next page
Indicating this band is on tour and
when (I had previously seen a Arctic
Monkeys article which indicated
they would be at Reading)
Getting people involved in
social networks is a
convention of ALL current
magazines
Other artists featured within the
magazine – seen on
