These people became known as voluntary indentured servants. However, not all servants were
voluntary. Once they arrived in America, they became their master's property and had to do what the
master said. If they did not do what they were told, they were punished. If they tried to run away,
they were punished. They were not allowed to do anything outside of their instructions without their
master's permission. These servants were kept in poor conditions. In my opinion, they were not feed,
clothed, or sheltered properly. Because of this lack of care, many servants or slaves died. Some
indentured servants or slaves did work off their debts and became free. In fact, seven former

To start it off they were located on opposite sides so they had different climates, the New England
Colony was located in the North so there was stronger and longer winters while in the Southern

the growing season was very short. The soil was also rocky, so farmers had to take all the rocks out
of the ground before planting. Due to these shortcomings, the farmers in the New England colonies

produce large amounts of tobacco and cotton. Having slaves do the work gave plantation owners
free labor, which made them rich Southern plantation owners. Without slavery the plantation owners

Northern Colonies the climate did not allow for farming all year long. The North needed slaves with
