The document summarizes feedback received from a focus group on various media products created to promote the crime film "Crook", including a trailer, magazine cover, and poster. For the trailer, focus group members commented positively on how the music built atmosphere and suspense. For the magazine cover, members noted that the red theme conveyed danger and the cover looked professional. Ratings for the products were mostly positive, with the poster receiving a few 3 and 5 star ratings.
4. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• The Music helped build a gripping atmosphere
• Suspense during the trailer created
• Progression of the trailer
• Structure of the trailer
So as you can see from some of the bullet points above the people within our focus
group believed that the music helped establish a “gripping atmosphere” which made the
trailer feel more scary and enticing to watch. On the other hand, the overall progression
of the trailer was another enjoyable feature of the trailer as the trailer slowly built up and
the suspense become more and more apparent towards the end of the trailer. The final
point was the structure of the trailer also being correct, the trailer started of slow and then
gradually revealed more about the plot of the film for Crook.
5. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• The character with the crowbar has committed a crime
• Detective wanting revenge after someone committed a crime
• A crime film
• A Detective whose loved one was killed and his pursuit of revenge
So as you can see from the answers that we received above the general census clearly
shows that the plot of the film is easily recognisable from the trailer we created for our
crime film Crook. Two of the answers we received suggested that the film was about a
Detective wanted revenge, this is perfect because it shows that our trailer did its purpose
of giving the audience an idea of what the film will be about. Another person said that the
film is centred around the character who is seen with the Crowbar in the trailer, again this
is correct because The Gripwell Killer is the murderer in the trailer and has therefore
committed a crime. Overall these answers suggests to use that our trailer gives the
audience enough information about the general plot.
6. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• A Murderer that has committed a Crime
• Structure and music
• The Detective’s slicked back hair which is often used in Crime films
• A Detective and a Criminal
As you can see above these are the pieces of feedback we got for this question. Firstly,
the people within our focus group picked up on the fact that our trailer seemingly involves
a Detective and a Criminal which is commonly use for other Crime films, this shows that
we took many conventions that Crime films have and decided to use them in our Crime
film ideas. Furthermore, the structure and music of our trailer is similar to other Crime film
trailers, which again overall shows the different conventions we have used for our trailer
which we took from other Crime film trailers. Finally, the hairstyle of the Detective was
also mentioned during the feedback we received for this question. During the research
and planning process we deicded that we wanted our Detective to have slick backed hair
because Detective’s commonly have this hair style, therefore this shows how much
thought we put into the Mise-En-Scene of our trailer and we were glad that someone
picked up on this small but great detail.
7. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• Some parts of the trailer were too dark
• The ending of the trailer gives away too much as it spoils the plot
• Lack of dialogue used
The first answer we got for this question was the fact that some parts of the trailer were
unfortunately too dark. This was something we picked up during the editing process of
our trailer and in order to combat this we decided to up the lighting in those shots that
were dark, this however did not do much and this is something we could not fix. In
addition to this, the ending of the trailer gave away too much to the audience, this
therefore gives away the plot of the film. This is something I agree and disagree with
because by having some tense action scenes help make the audience want to see the
trailer, however on the other hand giving away too much may result in the audience not
wanting to see the trailer since they already know what happens. Finally, the lack of
dialogue used during the trailer impacted the overall feel of the trailer, the lack of dialogue
made the trailer feel less professional.

So as you can see these are the results we got for the final
question. As you can see, one person rated our trailer a 3 star,
where as 3 other people decided to rate our trailer a 4 star.
Personally I am happy with these ratings because I feel that our
trailer had a lot of good points, however there were definitely some
parts of the trailer that I would personally love to improve, however
we cannot. For example, I think adding both dialogue and better
lighting would make our trailer close to a 5 star, these 2 elements in
my opinion would make our trailer look more pleasing to the
audience.
9. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• Red theme gives a danger look
• Looks professional
• Colours used
• Choice of colours & image used
Above is the feedback we received for this question. Firstly, across the board the
colouring we used for the front cover seemed to appeal to our focus group. The colouring
was something we thought would help establish a brand with our film for Crook. The red
colouring helps convey certain messages to the audience, for example the colour red can
signify danger, which someone in fact mentioned during their answer for this question.
Another person said that the front cover for Crook looks professional and finally another
person believes that the image we used for the front cover was appropriate. Overall the
feedback we received for this question was great, personally I think the answers we got
reflect the amount of effort we put into making this front cover look as neat as possible.
10. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• Charlie Quirk in a better font
• Less text on the front cover
• Red writing difficult to see on the black background
• Less text
The first answer we received was regarding the font we used on the front cover for the
text that read “CHARLIE QUIRK”. This of course relates to the font that is used for the
red circle on the front cover. The text does look slightly generic so this is something we
could definitely improve. Furthermore, 2 of the people from our focus group believe that
there was too much text on the magazine front cover for Crook. During the research and
planning process, we researched a range of front covers and we found that they had a lot
of text featured on the front cover therefore I believe the amount of text we used was
appropriate, however this is something we could take into consideration if we were to
redo our front cover for Crook. Finally, the last piece of feedback we got suggested that
our colour choice for the fonts we used were difficult to see on the dark background.
11. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• Structure of magazine
• Title & image
• Title stands out
• Images used
We decided to ask the focus group what they think is similar between our magazine front
cover compared to real ones we see in today’s modern day magazine industry. Firstly,
one person thought that the structure of the magazine was well done and looked similar
to other front covers they have seen for films. When creating our front cover we messed
around the structure and changed it around to make it look more neat and tidy, therefore I
am happy with this piece of feedback. Secondly, someone though that the title stood out
on the front cover which again is good because the title of the magazine is very important
as it helps sell the magazine to customers. Finally, two people believed that the image
used for the front cover was similar to other front covers. The image was big and helped
fill out most of the space on the front cover.

Tally I II I
As you can see these are the ratings we received for the front
cover for Crook. As you can see we managed to get a 5 rating for
our front cover which personally I am very proud of. When
creating our front cover we used many different conventions to try
and make our front cover look as professional as possible.
Furthermore, we were given a 3 rating which I think is fair and we
were also given a rating of 4 by 2 people. Overall I think the front
cover is the best media product we created because we used
many different conventions and spent a lot of time making sure
every bit of the front cover was spot on.
13. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• The poster directly links to the film
• Poster has a Crime feel to it
• Looks professional
• Black/Grey effects
The first piece of feedback we got regarding this question was that our poster directly
links to the film. This is something that we thought about when creating out poster as we
wanted to create a brand that people could easily associate with the film Crook. The best
way of doing this was through the poster for our film, therefore we decided to use the
same fonts and colours on all 3 of our media products. The second piece of feedback we
got was that the poster had a Crime like feel to it which again meant that we created an
effective poster that helped give the audience an idea of what the genre is for our film.
Moving onto the next piece of feedback, someone thought that the poster looks
professional which is important with any media product you look as the quality can help
drew in a larger audience. Finally, someone believed that the black/grey combination
looks pleasing to the eye. Overall I think our poster got some positive feedback from our
focus group.
14. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• Poster looks dull
• Font
According to half of our focus group there was nothing that could be improved on our
poster. This is very rewarding for us here at Crossroad Films because we put in a lot of
effort into making our poster look as good as possible. In terms of the feedback we did
receive, firstly someone thought that the font choices weren’t the best, on the other hand
someone else thought that the poster looked a bit dull. Overall I do think that the poster
looks great. The colouring choices could have been improved but I think that the
colouring choices we used were the right ones as it helped establish the theme of our film
which is good vs evil.
15. Below are the answers we received for this question:
• Structure
• Looks professional just like other film posters
• Font
• Credits at the bottom of the poster look traditional
This is the feedback we got for this question. As you can see someone believed that the
structure of our poster looked similar to other real life posters that they see for films. This
is good because we did our research well and looked into other film posters to try and
make ours look as similar to those as possible in terms of structure. Furthermore,
someone else suggested that the posters font also looked good and looked like it would
be featured on a poster that was created for a big named film. Finally, someone from our
focus group picked up on the credits we used at the bottom of the poster, they also said
that the credits looked traditional. Again during the research phase for our posters we
made sure to note down that the posters usually included elongated credits towards the
bottom of the poster.

Above are the ratings we received for our final media product (the
poster). We were give a 3 star rating which we feel was a bit harsh
considering the amount of conventions we included on our poster.
However, 3 members of our focus group believed that our poster
was fantastic as they gave it a 5 star rating. Personally I believe
our poster looked professional and the image and fonts we used
on the poster helped make it look more like a real poster which
could’ve been made for a big conglomerate company.
