THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN PROMOTING
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN BUSINESS ORGANISATIONS IN ZIMBABWE
1. InTRODUCTION
This study will critically analyse how industry in Zimbabwe is exploiting the strategic role of
Human Resources Management in promoting Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives in order to
give their business organizations competitive advantage. This introduction presents a context of the
research proposal and helps to clarify how fulfilment of the research aims and objectives will make
a contribution to Strategic Human Resources Management (SHRM) theory and practice. To achieve
this, the discussion starts with a brief background and purpose of the research study and then it

Porter and Kramer (2006) believe that there is space where the interest of pure philanthropy and
pure business can converge and create both social and economic benefits. It will be argued in this
study that CSR can give business organisations in Zimbabwe a competitive edge, a strategy that
business in developed markets are already exploiting.
Inyang, Awa and Enuoh (2011) observed that traditionally CSR has been a top–management driven
initiative nurtured from policy conception to implementation mainly by the organisations
executives. Sharma, Sharma and Devi (2009) also noted that from the very beginning the key player
in undertaking CSR activities in business organisations has been top management; other
stakeholders who include employees have been rarely covered under the ambit of CSR. It will be
argued in this study that the exclusion of other stakeholders, especially employees, and their non–
involvement in CSR initiatives tend to affect successful implementation of CSR programmes. As
Battacharya, Sen and Koschun (2008) have argued, this top–down approach to CSR creates a gap
between top management and employees concerning appropriate sources and ownership of CSR
initiatives. Perhaps a more strategic approach would be

Social Psychology : The Bystander Effect
Each of us has the capacity to help others. Demonstrations of courage by everyday heroes are
lauded, as they show the best of human nature. Unfortunately, human nature has its faults as well,
and people fall victims to others when others seek to do harm; additionally, people fall victim to
others when those around fail to act in preventing that harm. Social psychology research and
experimentation have defined a "bystander effect." This describes how, when in the presence of
many others, an individual will diffuse responsibility when seeing a potentially dangerous
interaction occurring and will be less likely to intervene. Despite our intentions and self–serving
biases, most of us are susceptible to the effect.
Our vulnerability to the bystander effect is exhibited in this dramatic and disturbing video. The
video depicts a young girl acting as a victim in a staged abduction by an older man while yelling "let
go of me, you're not my dad!" Throughout the video, we see the girl's mother watching the reaction–
and lack of reaction– of each of the passersby as they witnessed her daughter struggle in the man's
grasp. Each time a person or group of people passes the actors, they merely look at the situation and
keep on walking. The observing mother and producers were horrified by everyone's apparent lack of
overt concern for the young girl until, finally, two men ran up to the actors and a third man drove by,
all three of them with the intent to rescue the girl and stop the assailant. The producers and mother
were relieved that it had become clear people were willing to step up in this situation; however, the
experiment painted a bleak picture for human nature when faced with a perceived diffusion of
personal responsibility.
This video was chosen because it is particularly stunning in its conclusions and it is particularly
horrifying for parents and caregivers. It exposes an uncomfortable truth: that even the most
protected in our society are vulnerable to the effects of a dangerous world, full of potential bad
actors. Parents do as much as they can for their children, up to and including teaching children self–
defense mechanisms for situations such as those depicted in the video, but the reality is that parents

Alan Greenblatt's What Is The Age Of Responsibility?
Some people like to try to pick an age of responsibility for people to be able to do all things that the
average adult can do. What does the general public think the age of responsibility is? Through all
the panicking about the chosen age, no one is bothering to look at the facts that people mature and
develop at different times. Basically, I believe there is no specific age that will work for everyone so
there isn't one responsible age, there's several. In Alan Greenblatt's article What is the Age of
Responsibility (2011), he mentions a young police officer named Justin McNuall who was allowed
to be in police pursuits but wasn't allowed to rent a car. Car rental shops have an idea in their head
that after so many years of driving people should be safer drivers ... Show more content on

There are multiple sides to this argument though. Some people believe the drinking age should be
lowered to 18 because 18 years olds already do drink alcohol due to the law being, "...out of step
with social and cultural reality." according to Jack McCardell (Greenblatt,par.12–13). Though, seen
from the perspective of Alexander Wagenaar (Greenblatt, par.14) lowering the drinking age would
be disastrous because the underage drinking ages would drop to 15 through 17 year olds. He says,
"The people who are advocating going down to 18, should acknowledge that they're willing to risk
an extra thousand deaths per year and double the number of injuries." Some people know how and
when to drink. A friend of mine, who is underage, used to get at least buzzed once a month. He
knew his limit for drinking, when he would lose his own personal control, and what times and
places are appropriate for drinking. Personally, I don't believe I would be able to tell my limit, as I
have never been drunk. This is the difference, his personal age requirement was whenever he started
drinking, mine still hasn't

The Responsibility of a Catholic Citizen in a Free Society
Before we start to talk about our responsibilities we should be grateful that we are able to practice
our own faith and we can stand up for our religion and speak up about it. We are here to be an
example for the rest of the people out there who do not know any better and are falling in there
lives. It is our responsibility to help them. We also have responsibilities of our own – respecting
authority of both the church and government, evangelizing or spreading the word, donating time and
money to church and those in need, tolerance and many more. We are surrounded by challenges like

Those are some of our responsibilities. We also need to help the ones who are in need and the
poverty that goes on now days. It is unfair to those who are in need and we are greedy. We need to
share our wealth with others. Also we need to stop the racism that goes on. We are all from different
varieties of races. Ranging from every ethnic background to living in urban, rural, and suburban
communities. Some people have lower status jobs than others. Wherever they fall in the category we
need to respect everyone. Human life is a gift from God, and it is our responsibility to protect it
because God gave it to us. We should encourage the government and higher officials to pass laws
that protect life. Like we should help those who are pregnant and cannot manage to take care of the
baby, people who live in very poor conditions and do not have enough money to pay medical
expenses are examples of problems we face today, which take lives. Another way of violence is war.
The church has always been against war. The church says to solve the problem by peaceable means.
We are the ones who have to defend ourselves and society against violent crimes and matters like
that. Another issue is that we have to strive to make the needs and concerns of families. Marriage is
something that God intended to be good and the starting of a family. That is the basic starting of a
family life. People today are facing many problems that bring discomforts into family

Human Responsibility In Frankenstein

The Irresponsibility of Mankind Fracking, an effective way to reduce the cost of power and
strengthen the economy, shares many similarities with the themes of humanity reflected in
Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. It undoubtedly has the potential to destroy ecosystems, just like how
Frankenstein's monster can hurt everything around it. Additionally, both of them can make a huge
mess that is really hard to clean up. The consequences humanity faces if fracking companies don't
take responsibility for their greedy actions of obtaining more fossil fuels for monetary profit is the
unintentional and irreversible damages towards the environment that will be extremely difficult to
clean up. Fracking companies can hurt their surrounding environment in the same way that
Frankenstein's monster can spread death and sadness everywhere it goes. The monster exerts a
physical prowess, being able to survive a "ball [entering his] shoulder" to "advancing towards
[Frankenstein] with superhuman speed." (Shelley Ch 10) Like the monster, fracking companies are
very potent, since people like the "head of the EPA" support them and is determined to "dismantle
[his own] agency and protections." (Stone) Both fracking companies and the monster have a huge
influence on their surroundings, and their power can be used for good or evil. These companies can
pollute safe drinking water, killing fish, plant life, and ultimately

Our Responsibility To America
Our Responsibility
America was built on ideas of reform and changing the lives of settlers to no longer succumb to
oppression of someone telling them the way in which they must their lives. Blood was shed over the
desire to be free and be able to have a free society where the people would be responsible for the
outcome of their actions. Quoted in the preamble of the constitution is written, "We the People of
the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union... " the constitution mentions a "perfect
union" to create this we must fulfill the civic duties that are necessary to make this happen. Our
responsibilities to America entail being a productive member of society, being educated, and
volunteering in my community.

Aldous Huxley's Perception Of Human Responsibilities
British American writer Aldous Huxley termed "human potentialities", as a means for the human
body and consciousness tapping into mind and energy abilities that hasn't been reached yet. Huxley
has stated that consciousness is filtered and diminish by the brain instead of producing (Kripal,
2011). What does Huxley perception of "human potentialities" mean exactly? How I view Huxley's
human potentialities is that there are special abilities that the humanity has yet to uncover for the
moment. As much as we have developed as a species, with the inclusion of scientific research
providing a leverage to better understand our world, we have yet to accept or comprehend the
thought that humans can construct extraordinary capabilities. We

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESRPONSIBILITY (CSR)
Introduction
Today, the world faces numerous challenges ranging from dreadful environmental conditions
through poverty and human rights, to energy and resource supply issues. Social responsibility policy
focuses on using the capabilities of a business to improve lives and sustain our planet through
contributions to local communities and society at large. In other words, a business should fully
realize it's potential as an organization to make a better world through corporate self–regulation
assimilated into a business module.
CSR and Human Rights The global community expects companies to operate with due admiration
for human rights. Beyond meeting regulatory requirements and social expectations in areas in which
they operate, by proactively presenting more rigorous international standards such as the United
Nations Global Compact, companies will reinforce their commitment to human rights. In 1998 the
Secretary General of the UN, declared that he "was building a more solid relationship with the
business community. Thriving markets and human security goes hand in hand: without one we will
not have the other" (Annan,
1998, p. 1820). Afterwards, a World Economic Forum was held in 1999. At the forum,
Kofi Annan introduced what is known the 'Global Compact'. This is the ten principles agreement

Introduction
In order for a business or an organization to be successful, the relationships between the employees,
supervisors, clients, suppliers, investors and shareholders play an important role. These relationships
are considered to be as one of the key areas to make the business function smoothly and efficiently.
Not only it's the responsibility of the organizations to promote and conduct responsible and ethical
business practices at every level but, also they should make sure that their contractors and vendors
are aware of these practices. In this paper I will analyze PharmaCARE's ethical and corporate

Based on characteristics such as interest, involvement, affect, level and position in the organization,
stakeholders could be classified into three categories:
Primary Stakeholders: Their interests are important to the success of business. They are directly
influenced by the actions of the organization, either positively or negatively. Examples of primary
stakeholders are clients, managers, team members and end users etc.
Secondary Stakeholders: They play an intermediary role in the business and are indirectly
influenced by the actions of the organization, either positively or negatively. Example of secondary
stakeholders are financial consultants, administrative staff etc.
Key Stakeholders: They are the individuals who can pass and enforce rules and regulations. They
might belong to either or neither of the first two groups i.e. primary and secondary stakeholders.
Example of key stakeholders are the director or CEO of the organization, elected government
officials, funders etc.
The stakeholders within the given scenario include PharmaCARE, one of the most successful

Short Stories : Personal Responsibility
Do you feel an obligation to think about other people's welfare? If you do, how far does that
responsibility extend? Are you responsible for a sibling, a neighbor, or even a stranger across the
world? The short stories I read help me think about the world around me and enlighten my
understanding of my personal responsibility to others. First, these short stories show personal
responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for the weaker or oppressed members
of society. Second, the short stories I read helped me think about to what extent should we be driven
by personal responsibility to act with compassion, empathy, and concern for others. Finally, short
stories exemplify how we are personally responsible for our friends and how we live our own lives.
First, short stories show personal responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for
the weaker or oppressed members of society.Throughout the short stories, I have seen how the
weaker and oppressed member of society are being helped. For example, in the short story, the
"Scarlet Ibis", the narrator has a responsibility, given to him by his mother, to help his younger
brother who cannot care for himself. As the narrator says in the story, "It seemed so hopeless from
the beginning that it's a miracle I didn't give up. But all of us must have something or someone to be
proud of, and Doodle had become mine. I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing,

Human Resource Development : An Element Of Corporate...
Human Resource Development – Is this an element of Corporate Social Responsibility or should it
be left to the individual autonomy?
The function of human resource development (HRD) is fundamentally connected to individual and
organisational development. As a result of this fundamental connection, it is ultimately human
resource development (HRD) units in organisations that are well positioned to help develop an
understanding and implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The purpose of this literature review will be to examine the definition of CSR and the role of HRD
in organisations. In considering the function of HRD in response to CSR, there is much
inconsistency and debate in defining what exactly constitutes socially responsible practice. The
reason for this is corporate social responsibility (CSR) practice occurs in different contexts and is
dependent on perceptions to the individual. Ultimately there are gaps in literature, which occur as a
result of key problems in defining what CSR is to organisations and the role of HRD professionals.
There is much inconsistency and debate in defining what exactly constitutes socially responsible
practice. The issue of HRD and it's impact in relation to CSR has been brought to light by the
emergence of increased awareness both of the power of corporations in the global economy, and of
some of the negative repercussions of global economic activity (Wilcox 2006).
This paper will consider the definition of

Moral Responsibility In Susan Wolf's Analysis
In an attempt to explain moral responsibility, Susan Wolf puts forth a modified version of what she
calls the Deep Self View (DSV) first expounded on by Harry Frankfurt, Gary Watson and Charles
Taylor (Perry et al. 460–462). The key to her argument the condition of sanity; a deep self must be
sane in order to be considered morally responsible. However, I will argue that her attempt fails for
the following two reasons:
1. Wolf's definition of sanity is too vague and to be useful and relies on the collective view of lay
persons.
2. Wolf raises the bar of moral responsibility so high as to make it nearly impossible to reach and in
the process seems to defeat her own argument.
Wolf's attempt to make sense of DSV by creating her own definition of sanity (CITATION) does not
add clarity to DSV but instead creates more confusion. Her definition seems to rely too heavily on
the views of the general population for determining what is and is not sane (CITATION). What is
sane then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"...the minimally sufficient ability cognitively and normatively to recognize and appreciate the
world for what it is" (Perry et al. 465).
In other words, society at large is the yardstick for judging what is and is not to be considered sane
and acceptable behavior. While few would object to the role sanity plays in a person's moral
responsibility, Wolf's definition of the sane DSV is far too vague and subjective to be of any real
value.
So, if we accept Wolf's vague definition of the sane DSV and assume our view of the world is the
correct one, we may create even bigger problems. All too often the tyranny of the righteous majority
has violated the rights of the weak and savage minority. Therefore, it is my argument that Wolf's
definition of the sane DSV has the very real potential of creating even more Jo Jo's on an even larger
scale. Wolf acknowledges the difficulty of this objection and admits there are no satisfactory
answers (Perry et al.

Lord Of The Flies Symbolism
Symbols of Lord of the Flies In society murder is considered heinous and unforgivable, yet it is still
occurs every day. In "Lord of the Flies", William Golding uses the symbol of the conch and the fire
to show that without strict rules in order, human nature implicitly gives into the temptations of
savagery. William Golding uses the symbol of the conch to represent power and order in the boy's
society, and when it shatters, order is lost, leaving the boys victim to the temptations of savagery.
The conch was one of the first things the boys find when they first arrive on the island and is blown
to first unite them altogether. This immediately gives the conch a form of power and is continuously
used throughout the novel to call important meetings and restore order. When the boys decide to
vote for who is chief, most of the boys are inclined to pick Ralph because of his good looks and
strong stature, but "most powerfully, there was the conch" (Golding 22). Almost immediately after
the boys first come together everyone is already aware of the power of the conch. The conch is the
thing that brought them all together, and most of the boys have not even seen a conch before, giving
it an even more ominous and controlling vibe. Most importantly the conch represents power and
order, which is why the boys use it as a primary factor in choosing the chief, thinking that will bring
the most order. To restore order to a meeting Ralph shouts, "'Hear him! He's got the conch!'"

Impact Of Human Decisions On The Social Responsibility
This quote by J.W. Goethe focuses on the impact that human decisions have on their surrounding
environments. Goethe's view is that everyone, no matter their status in society, has the ability to
make choices that determine their actions which inevitably affect other people either positively or
negatively. This can be projected onto the social corporate responsibility context through the various
decisions made by business personnel based on their ethical values which directly or indirectly
affect their employees and other people in the society as well.
People's decisions are often based on their moral perceptions of things. These perceptions are often
sculptured by their diverse cultural backgrounds thereby bringing varying moral perceptions of
global issues. In corporate social responsibility, the social concept of morality can be traced to the
traditional ethical theories attributed to ethical decision making especially among business
personnel. These theories can be classified as either non–consequentialist or consequentialist
theories. Consequentialist theories often base moral judgements on the results of engaging in a
particular action and are often based on intended outcomes, the aims or the goals of the undertaken
action. Non–consequentialist theories on the other hand base their moral judgements on the
underlying principles of the decision maker's motivation (Crane 2010). Consequentialist theories
such as Egoism and utilitarianism often play a big role in the choices

Often Victor Frankenstein's creation is given his surname in modern depictions. While in the book
Mary Shelley never truly gave the creature a name. Whether out of convenience or not, Victor
Frankenstein and his creature share a deeper connection that makes them similar and different in
many ways. By using Victor Frankenstein's surname for the creature, there is an implied closeness
between the two. Stemming from Victor's refusal to acknowledge the creature and the 'chance' that
brought the creature into being. By acknowledging the creature, Victor would be admitting to his

While the creature explains to Victor that he is not inherently bad, Victor chooses to see him in a
much different light. The creature reveals that before the rejections that created hatred, vengeance
and loneliness in him, he was kind and took into consideration his actions and how they affected
others. Due to these actions, he believed that his negative emotion arose when his appearance kept
him from creating close relationships. Notably, this argument demonstrates that nurture trumps
nature and the creature became vengeful due to his treatment by others, originating from Victor's
desertion. Victor Frankenstein on the other hand, believed that the creature was born bad and did not
develop this behavior. He blames the creation of the creature on the Angel of Destruction, as if the
Angel of Destruction planted a seed of evil into the very being of the creature. Thus blaming the
actions of the creature on nature rather than nurture. This ideal allows him to dissociate himself from
the fact that he created the creature and is responsible for the creature just as a father would be
responsible for his child. For the most part the creature and Victor Frankenstein share an unusual
bond that helps to reveal their similarities and differences. While neither want to take the blame for
the creature's action they both go down a path that starts out well enough and soon takes a turn for
the worst. Overall the strange connection between the two fuels their later encounters and personal

The Qualities Of A Leader
Qualities of Leadership
A leader is someone has the capacity to influences a group of people to achieve a goal. Leader
commands a listening ear at first and gradually progresses over time. Leader leads by example and
other are motivated to follow him. Leader must visualize his goal and possess persuasive skills and
ability to influence follower. There lies a strong relationship between leadership and integrity.

Human Resource Management ( Hrm ) And Corporate Social...
The recent advent of Critical Management Studies has suggested inconsistency between
management in theory that was rather 'rational and technical' as compared to management in
practice which was more 'complex' (Cunliffe, 2014). This has led to a re–evaluation of the methods
used to conduct management and its specialisms such as Human Resource Management.
Over the years, Human Resource Management (HRM) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
have been seen as separate variables in both practice–oriented as well as academic discourses.
(Schoemaker, Nijhof and Jonker, 2006) Hence, there is serious skepticism regarding the ability of
HRM to significantly contribute towards CSR within organizations. However, with priorities of a

Following the efforts of management researchers to narrow the gap between management theory and
practice, a third variable has emerged: Human Value Management (HVM). Touted as the future of
HRM, it is a function that ensures a business is driven by both market–orientation as well as social
responsibility. Employees desire to be identified with an organization that is aligned with its
commitment of taking accountability for its activities that may impact the society as well as bringing
about a sustainable change. It is thus essential that HRM develops processes that integrate CSR and
ethics practices into an organization's brand rather than make it a mere publicity strategy.
The prime focus is on the integration of HRM and CSR as a whole, rather than two different entities.
Data gathered from online research and academic literature shall be used to analyze the role of HRM
in promoting CSR in an organization. This idea can further be supported through the example of The
University of Manchester, the efforts invested by its Human Resource function to ensure that what
the university is teaching as part of its Human Resource Management module aligns with how
people are treated within the university itself as well as the programs initiated by the university to
contribute towards building a knowledgeable workforce in the society.

Family life education is about preparing individuals and families for the role and responsibilities of
family living (Arcus & Thomas, 1993, p. 1). Some of the topics covered under family life education
are: "how families work; the interrelationship of families and society; human growth and
development throughout the life span; the physiological and psychological aspects of human
sexuality; the impact of money and time management on daily family life; the importance and value
of parent education; the effects of policy and legislation on families; ethical considerations in
professional conduct; and a solid understanding and knowledge of how to teach and / or develop

Analysis Of Rajeev Ravisankar's Sweatshop Oppression
In his opinion essay, "Sweatshop Oppression," published in the student newspaper, The Lantern, at
Ohio State University, writer Rajeev Ravisankar uses his article as a platform to raise awareness
about the deplorable conditions in sweatshops. Ravisankar awakens his readers from their slumber
and brings to light the fact that they are partly responsible for the problem. His first goal in the essay
is to designate college students as conscious consumers who look to purchase goods at the lowest
prices. Then he makes the connection between this type of low–cost consumerism and the high
human cost that workers are forced to pay in sweatshops. His second goal is to place the real burden
of responsibility directly with the companies that perpetuate this system of exploitation. Finally, he
proposes what can be done about it. By establishing a relationship that includes himself in the
audience, working to assign responsibility to the reader, and keeping them emotionally invested,
Ravisankar makes a powerful argument that eventually prompts his student reader to take
responsibility for their actions and make a change. For Ravisankar's argument to be effective, he
makes a connection with the readers. He accomplishes this by including himself in the audience and,
also, by earning their trust. This style of writing uses "us" and "we" in the dialog which establishes
himself as being part of the conversation. To make the trust connection with his readers, he first
clarifies how their low–cost consumerism is partly responsible for the problem, but he does so in an
empathetic way. He sees their position as, "being the poor college students that we all are," which is
an understandable way of including himself while consciously giving the students' a personal stake
in the argument and assigning them responsibility. In this way, the writer immediately connects with
his audience and draws them in by being sympathetic to their needs. After he gains their trust, he
works toward gaining sympathy for the worker who are forced to pay the price for the students'
irresponsible but unintentional choices. During this discussion of the problem, Ravisankar writes as
if he is assuming that the students are unaware of how much their

Social Responsibility Of Human Trafficking In The United...
Human trafficking is the exploitation of humans to make money. There are more slaves today than
ever in history. Most times victims are trafficked by people they know, trust and love like friends
and family.
On average 300,000 children are trafficked in the United States every year. Personally, I feel that
Human Trafficking is something everyone should be informed about because it is a worldwide
dilemma that could happen to anyone no matter, age. In Portland Oregon, August 1st 2017 a woman
was charged for connection to trafficking a teen.
Approximately 300,000 people die from being trafficked for sex from abuse, disease, and torture
every year. Some victims are runaway girls that have been sexually abused as children. 98% of sex

They will be trafficked to do work for long hours and suffer from abuse just like women. In more
recent years male prostitution has occurred. In all reality, "men and boys are subjected to
commercial sexual exploitation in many countries around the world, and they even outnumber
female victims within certain subcategories of trafficking. To ignore these facts is not only
inaccurate, but also dangerous – it has led to the oblivious abandonment of tens of thousands of
victims".
While researching for this paper I found a website talking about TVPA. This organization helps only
surviving victims, I understand it is important to help the victims but I feel it's more important to
help the current victims. Most programs are only focusing on the survivors when there are people
still getting abused and tourchered.
In conclusion, human trafficking is modern day slavery and a violation of human right. Anyone can
be trafficked no matter their background. The most common types of trafficking is forced labor,
forced prostitution and domestic servitude. Girls are young as 6 years old can be victims of sex
trafficking; boys can be forced into intensive labor at just 10 years old. Human trafficking is more
than wrong and should not exist, but it does and all anyone can do now is help not only survivors

My Personal Characteristics Of Personality
Many people who are living in this world have different personalities. There are no two people who
have the exactly same personalities. Each one of them is unique in their own ways and one's
personality is something that does not change which makes one unique and special. However, some
people may act differently. For example, they may act quiet and reserved around their family but
around their friends they may feel boisterous and loud. People may feel more comfortable around
their family as they can show their true personality. People cover up their true personality sometimes
just to appease other people. They do not want to show their true colors in case it leads to
humiliation. Some people wear certain clothes just to fit in with a certain group. Others don't voice
their true opinions and just go with the flow and don't stand up. The baker in the WAM painting
might appear to be haughty and selfish who just tries to sell his products. But I see him as a caring,
responsible, independent, and grateful individual who is willing to share his bread to others and give
his skills to others with the care. From my personal viewpoint, I feel that I am like this and found it
difficult to identify my true internal qualities until I came to America and realize my qualities. The
Baker also reminded me of my five greatest strengths: Independence, Caring, Gratitude, Learner,
and Responsibility. Independence was always been right up my alley. It was my defining
characteristic. More honestly, independence was something I had to embrace from a young age. As
an only child to working parents, my memories as a first grader include waking up to an empty
home and coming back to one after school. It was par for the course for my parents to miss school
performances, parent–teacher conferences, you name it. My first flight alone took place in the sixth
grade: Korean Air Flight 37 from Seoul to O'Hare International Airport, a one–way itinerary that
brought me under the care of my aunt and uncle in Kalamazoo. For me, self–reliance was the path to
maturity; the less I burdened and worried those around me, the better.
With one foot in Seoul and the other in Kalamazoo, I have been juggling two homes for going on six
years. For the first

In The Dark Side Of Science Book Review
In The Dark Side of science by Heather E. Douglas that published in the November (2011) issue of
The Scientist, promotes the use of forethought on studies done by scientists. Dr. Douglas focuses on
the great need for the studies done to include the negative outcome on life vs just the positive. In a
closer reading Dr. Douglas is humanizing the situation to connect with scientists explaining why we
need to take responsibility for our actions.
Dr. Douglas feels it is in the scientist of who discovers the work are responsible for future uses. She
goes to talk about how gene science is important and has done great things to advance humanity.
She also states that is it not perfect as a result of there being people that will always do harm; Dr.
Douglas says, "Scientist are responsible for both the impacts they intend and any of the impacts they
do not intend, if they are readily foreseeable in specific detail." Here, the author is calling out to the
scientist that it is up to them to prevent their work from causing harm. She does not expect the

Both are not words that the average American uses and I'm sure majority does not even know what
they are. The only time I hear those words is in a doctor's office. Another is where she goes deeper

Understanding Empowerment From An Employee Perspective :...
The article this group chose to critique is titled, "Understanding Empowerment from an Employee
Perspective: What Does It Mean and Do They Want It?", by Kay Greasley, Alan Bryman, Andrew
Dainty, Andrew Price, Nicola Naismith, and Robby Soetanto. The purpose of this article is to figure
out exactly how employees define empowerment, and decide if they want to be empowered in the
workplace. The methodology used for this study was a qualitative interview process consisting of,
"Four employees [that] were sampled within each project, with the exception of one project where
three employees were selected. Each employee was interviewed three times over the course of a
year to provide a total of 45 interviews." (Greasley et al., 2007, pg.45). The employees and 45
interviews only came from one sector. They were asked a series of question regarding their personal
perception of empowerment in the workplace, and whether or not they felt like it was something
they wanted. The only recommendation for further research in this study was to test more sectors
since only one sector was tested in this study (Greasley et al, 2007, pg.49).
Findings: Do employees Know what empowerment is? The general findings for this study were that
most employees did not understand the term empowerment as it applies to their job. From the
reading it appeared many of the employees assumed it had something to do with power at work,
possibly meaning a supervisorial role. However most questioned could identify with

Essay on Human Nature at its Worst
When Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" was first published in The New Yorker in 1948, it struck a
nerve with readers. "The story was incendiary; readers acted as if a bomb had blown up in their
faces . . . Shirley struck a nerve in mid–twentieth–century America . . . She had told people a painful
truth about themselves" (Oppenheimer 129). Interestingly, the story strikes that same nerve with
readers today. When my English class recently viewed the video, those students who had not

in high school. Our English teacher chose to show the video before any student had read the story.

Throughout more modern history, wars have been fought resulting in the deaths of millions.
Murders and other violent crime are inescapable. Throughout the entire history of mankind, it can be
shown that man's capacity for evil has no limits. But is this what troubles readers of Jackson's story?
"We cannot, in all honesty, make any serious claim that our own culture really abhors violence. . . .
Modern society still feels the need to watch violent events, whether it be at a boxing match or
spattered across the cinema screen" (Baker 5). Society today is bombarded with violence. There is
graphic, and often gratuitous, violence in movies and video games. Most people do not give this
type of violence a second thought. This may be because they know that the violence in the movies or
games is not real, but "The Lottery" was just a story; it, too, was not real. So what is it about
Jackson's story that hits readers so deeply? What makes "The Lottery" so disturbing? For years,
critics have been trying to answer these questions. Some have focused on the story's symbolism
while others have focused on its relationship to the horrors of World War II. Jay Yarmove writes,
"Coming after the revelation of the depths of depravity to which the Nazis sank in their eagerness to
destroy other, 'lesser' peoples, 'The Lottery' upsets the reader's sense of complacency." (242) He goes

The Charter Of Human Rights And Responsibilities Act 2006...
LEGAL ADVICE
QUESTIONS PRESENTED:
1. Does the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic) ("Charter") protect the
conduct of Josh, Dianne and Cary?
2. Is Section 6 of the Summary Offences Act 1966 (Vic) compatible with the Charter?
3. Is Victoria Police in breach of the Charter?
4. Is AX6 Pty Ltd in breach of the Charter?
5. Is the Adult Parole Board in breach of the Charter?
Short Advice
In relation to the Charter, my advice is that Josh's conduct is not protected and the cancellation of his
parole by the Adult Parole Board was not in breach of the Charter. Moreover, the conduct of Dianne
and Cary is initially protected by the Charter however due to the limitations placed upon human
rights it can be argued that Dianne and Cary's conduct are indeed in breach. Additionally Victoria
police in partner with AX6 are in breach of numerous rights set out in the Charter, which will be
discussed in further detail.
Long Advice The Charter was established to create a framework for the protection and promotion of
human rights for those within Victoria.
Conduct
Section 15 of the Charter provides every human being with the right to freedom of expression; every
person has the right to hold an opinion without interference and has the right to freedom of
expression, whether it is orally, in writing, in print or way of art. Josh's expression in regards to an

Three Responsibilities Of A Good Parent
What are three responsibilities of a good parent?
Being a parent could be one of the most difficult occupation a person could ever possess. Parenting
is a full–time job that never ends; regardless the fact that children mature. One can become a parent
once his wife conceives an offspring or they adopt a child. Being a good parent accompanies
numerous great or terrible times. A good parent exhibits the difference between what's right and
reprehensible. It's significant for parents to teach their children what's right from an early age.
Children ought to have respect for elders, leader, parents and the laws of the nation in which they
live. Parents ought not to spoil their child as to quote a saying "spare the rod and spoil the child".

Firstly, a good parent shields the child from physical, sexual and emotional abuse. For example, a
single mother dating or in a relationship with a male panther must be careful with her daughter
around him particularly in the event that he's concentrating or engross with her daughter. As a dating
single parent, your children are in danger of being sexually or physically abused. The headline of the
daily newspapers published various sexual abuses towards children under the age of sixteen. As
parent's, it's one's obligation to take a silent promise to shield one's child from being abused.
Secondly, a good parent would keep all hazardous objects locked up or out the reach of the child.
For instance, mothers with babies need to ensure all cords and electrical sockets are secured, to
avoid infants from pushing any objects into it. Thirdly, parent's must consider safety persecutions to
protect the child. For example, when taking your little child for a drive, one ought to ensure that the
car seat is strapped in and the car door is locked before leaving the garage. As a result, the well–
being of your child must be crucial to the

Corporate Social Responsibility: Corporate social responsibility is a form of corporate self–
regulation integrated into a business model. CSR policy functions as a built–in, self–regulating
mechanism whereby businesses monitors and ensures its active compliance with the spirit of the
law, ethical standards, and international norms.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become an increasingly accepted topic for both
mainstream practice and academic discussion. It focuses on moving organizations away from a
single bottom–line philosophy (economic) to encouraging organizations to undertake roles
traditionally seen as beyond the scope of the profit–seeking organization such as environmental
protection, supporting education and involvement in the community. One of the most commonly
referenced terms for this is the "triple bottom line" (economic, social and environmental). This
bottom focuses on reducing the organization's negative impact on the world and it helps to improve
their positive image.
CSR is the commitment of a company to behave ethically and to improve its employee's quality of
life, while contributing to economic development. Companies are expected to work with CSR and it
can be rewarding for both customers and companies. However, CSR can be damaging for a
company if it is performed incorrectly. For example, if the organization`s CSR efforts are focused on

Report: Basanta Adhikari
Journal–2 Pre–100 Basanta Adhikari Questions: 1) What is self–responsibility? What is the key to
gain maximum control? Answer: Self–responsibility is the sole attribute of an individual of being
accountable of their action while utilizing, controlling and mobilizing their personal resources.
However, being self–reliant and punctual matters the most. The key to gain maximum control over
ourselves is to figure out how to make a habit of being punctual in action. Individuals can widen
their knowledge either by doing personal research or by socializing in the community in to collect
foundation of self–reliance. Moreover, an individual can incline his ability to be self–responsible

In order to address the various sort of people we might have to adjust the usage of vocabulary. We
have to be straight forward and oriented to the point while expressing our thoughts and views in the

other fancy word may create ambiguities. This may result in failure to address the topic properly.
However, there is variety not only in the social composition, the race, but also in the literary
background. Therefore, to synchronize our words into their point of view; the way we clarify our
words matters the most. This concept is so prominent in day to day life. The way our leaders and

The Code Red By Lance Corporal Harold
Lance Corporal Harold Dawson and Private First Class Louden Downey enter Private First Class
Santiago's bunk room to perform a "code red," a form of punishment used by military personal that
is not in protocols; the two men were following an order given to them by a superior officer. At
Guantanamo Bay orders are taken very seriously. A quote from the film, A Few Good Men, states
"they are not permitted to disobey orders," showing that the two men had no other choice "because
they were ordered to do it"(Reiner). The men followed through with a code red rather than
disobeying direct orders, which is against their beliefs as a unit. So sometimes following an order

Following commands is a very important part of keeping order. Now imagine a row of blue clad
Navy soldiers, carrying out drills in perfect unison, if just one person were to break orders and fail to
correctly initiate their portion of the drill it makes every singular other soldier look bad, including
themselves, thus creating an incentive to not break orders and not mess up no matter what the
situation. Furthermore, should someone always follow orders? In the case of Downey and Dawson
following an order ended up getting an innocent man killed. Milgram points out that "the ordinary
person who shocked the victim did so out of a sense of obligation – an impression of his duties as a
subject" (par 96). Dawson and Downey carried out the requested code red because they felt
obligated. As a result, they were obligated to ignore their own personal morals and do the commands
of another person. Another explanation is provided by MacDonald is "the mission in way–to get the
job done–might at times cause a certain degree of sadism." (par. 8) So, it seems that over time
soldiers derive satisfaction from acting out violent orders and because of this and the combined
effects of war, they seem to disregard other humans' physical pain which in turn makes taking orders
that much easier. This disregard for

Human Rights And Citizen Responsibility
Such policy is not legitimate. Citizens should be allowed to freely move and migrant. Their natural
rights should always surpass citizen responsibility. However, when their natural rights and citizen
responsibility do not contradict with each other, citizens should obey their citizen responsibilities.
Citizenship means that the citizen of this country has the nationality of this country and has the
rights and the obligations in accordance to the constitution and laws of the state. Citizens should
have the rights to vote for the candidate in the election and participate in the politics. Citizens are
equal under the laws. Citizens should have the freedom for the speech and the religion. Citizens also
have the rights to have the basic education, start the business and keep the possession if the
possession is achieved by legal process. When citizens go to another country, they are under the
protection of their mother country. At the same time, citizens have the duties to respect the
constitution and the laws of the state. Citizens also have the duties to protect the public goods and
pay taxes. In order to close the gap between the rich and the poor, it is necessary for governments to
enforce the hierarchy of tax laws and it is duty for citizens to pay such taxes. However, when the
society climbs its ladder to a status that is mostly equal, citizens will have less and less
responsibility to countries and the taxation should be reduced dramatically. Instead, citizens will

Coca Cola 's Responsibility Of Human Rights Violations
Coca–Cola's responsibilities include remaining respectful of all cultures and their laws and
traditions, maintaining their ethics and values, while being accountable for their actions. They
should offer compliance and social good as required by law, yet extends farther than their own
interests. Utilitarianism also comes to mind.
The company is responsible to society as a whole. Unfortunately, transnational corporations do not
seem to be accountable to anyone. In this case, Coca–Cola is responsible to civil society as well as
governmental obligation. Approaching business with an operational point of view is seen as a more
acceptable method.
The company's responsibility to society is that their ethical framework should be a balance between
sustainability and that which benefits society collectively.
Whether or not Coca–Cola should support bottlers accused of human rights violations is a tricky

The Strategic Role Of Human Resources Management In...

  • 1. The Strategic Role of Human Resources Management in... THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN PROMOTING CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN BUSINESS ORGANISATIONS IN ZIMBABWE 1. InTRODUCTION This study will critically analyse how industry in Zimbabwe is exploiting the strategic role of Human Resources Management in promoting Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives in order to give their business organizations competitive advantage. This introduction presents a context of the research proposal and helps to clarify how fulfilment of the research aims and objectives will make a contribution to Strategic Human Resources Management (SHRM) theory and practice. To achieve this, the discussion starts with a brief background and purpose of the research study and then it explains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Porter and Kramer (2006) believe that there is space where the interest of pure philanthropy and pure business can converge and create both social and economic benefits. It will be argued in this study that CSR can give business organisations in Zimbabwe a competitive edge, a strategy that business in developed markets are already exploiting. Inyang, Awa and Enuoh (2011) observed that traditionally CSR has been a top–management driven initiative nurtured from policy conception to implementation mainly by the organisations executives. Sharma, Sharma and Devi (2009) also noted that from the very beginning the key player in undertaking CSR activities in business organisations has been top management; other stakeholders who include employees have been rarely covered under the ambit of CSR. It will be argued in this study that the exclusion of other stakeholders, especially employees, and their non– involvement in CSR initiatives tend to affect successful implementation of CSR programmes. As Battacharya, Sen and Koschun (2008) have argued, this top–down approach to CSR creates a gap between top management and employees concerning appropriate sources and ownership of CSR initiatives. Perhaps a more strategic approach would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Social Psychology : The Bystander Effect Each of us has the capacity to help others. Demonstrations of courage by everyday heroes are lauded, as they show the best of human nature. Unfortunately, human nature has its faults as well, and people fall victims to others when others seek to do harm; additionally, people fall victim to others when those around fail to act in preventing that harm. Social psychology research and experimentation have defined a "bystander effect." This describes how, when in the presence of many others, an individual will diffuse responsibility when seeing a potentially dangerous interaction occurring and will be less likely to intervene. Despite our intentions and self–serving biases, most of us are susceptible to the effect. Our vulnerability to the bystander effect is exhibited in this dramatic and disturbing video. The video depicts a young girl acting as a victim in a staged abduction by an older man while yelling "let go of me, you're not my dad!" Throughout the video, we see the girl's mother watching the reaction– and lack of reaction– of each of the passersby as they witnessed her daughter struggle in the man's grasp. Each time a person or group of people passes the actors, they merely look at the situation and keep on walking. The observing mother and producers were horrified by everyone's apparent lack of overt concern for the young girl until, finally, two men ran up to the actors and a third man drove by, all three of them with the intent to rescue the girl and stop the assailant. The producers and mother were relieved that it had become clear people were willing to step up in this situation; however, the experiment painted a bleak picture for human nature when faced with a perceived diffusion of personal responsibility. This video was chosen because it is particularly stunning in its conclusions and it is particularly horrifying for parents and caregivers. It exposes an uncomfortable truth: that even the most protected in our society are vulnerable to the effects of a dangerous world, full of potential bad actors. Parents do as much as they can for their children, up to and including teaching children self– defense mechanisms for situations such as those depicted in the video, but the reality is that parents are ... • 5. Alan Greenblatt's What Is The Age Of Responsibility? Some people like to try to pick an age of responsibility for people to be able to do all things that the average adult can do. What does the general public think the age of responsibility is? Through all the panicking about the chosen age, no one is bothering to look at the facts that people mature and develop at different times. Basically, I believe there is no specific age that will work for everyone so there isn't one responsible age, there's several. In Alan Greenblatt's article What is the Age of Responsibility (2011), he mentions a young police officer named Justin McNuall who was allowed to be in police pursuits but wasn't allowed to rent a car. Car rental shops have an idea in their head that after so many years of driving people should be safer drivers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are multiple sides to this argument though. Some people believe the drinking age should be lowered to 18 because 18 years olds already do drink alcohol due to the law being, "...out of step with social and cultural reality." according to Jack McCardell (Greenblatt,par.12–13). Though, seen from the perspective of Alexander Wagenaar (Greenblatt, par.14) lowering the drinking age would be disastrous because the underage drinking ages would drop to 15 through 17 year olds. He says, "The people who are advocating going down to 18, should acknowledge that they're willing to risk an extra thousand deaths per year and double the number of injuries." Some people know how and when to drink. A friend of mine, who is underage, used to get at least buzzed once a month. He knew his limit for drinking, when he would lose his own personal control, and what times and places are appropriate for drinking. Personally, I don't believe I would be able to tell my limit, as I have never been drunk. This is the difference, his personal age requirement was whenever he started drinking, mine still hasn't ... The Responsibility of a Catholic Citizen in a Free Society Before we start to talk about our responsibilities we should be grateful that we are able to practice our own faith and we can stand up for our religion and speak up about it. We are here to be an example for the rest of the people out there who do not know any better and are falling in there lives. It is our responsibility to help them. We also have responsibilities of our own – respecting authority of both the church and government, evangelizing or spreading the word, donating time and money to church and those in need, tolerance and many more. Those are some of our responsibilities. We also need to help the ones who are in need and the poverty that goes on now days. It is unfair to those who are in need and we are greedy. We need to share our wealth with others. Also we need to stop the racism that goes on. We are all from different varieties of races. Ranging from every ethnic background to living in urban, rural, and suburban communities. Some people have lower status jobs than others. Wherever they fall in the category we need to respect everyone. Human life is a gift from God, and it is our responsibility to protect it because God gave it to us. We should encourage the government and higher officials to pass laws that protect life. Like we should help those who are pregnant and cannot manage to take care of the baby, people who live in very poor conditions and do not have enough money to pay medical expenses are examples of problems we face today, which take lives. Another way of violence is war. The church has always been against war. The church says to solve the problem by peaceable means. We are the ones who have to defend ourselves and society against violent crimes and matters like that. Another issue is that we have to strive to make the needs and concerns of families. Marriage is something that God intended to be good and the starting of a family. That is the basic starting of a family life. • 13. Human Responsibility In Frankenstein Patrick Lee Mr. Delfin Search For Human Potential / Period 5 27 October 2017 The Irresponsibility of Mankind Fracking, an effective way to reduce the cost of power and strengthen the economy, shares many similarities with the themes of humanity reflected in Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. It undoubtedly has the potential to destroy ecosystems, just like how Frankenstein's monster can hurt everything around it. Additionally, both of them can make a huge mess that is really hard to clean up. The consequences humanity faces if fracking companies don't take responsibility for their greedy actions of obtaining more fossil fuels for monetary profit is the unintentional and irreversible damages towards the environment that will be extremely difficult to clean up. Fracking companies can hurt their surrounding environment in the same way that Frankenstein's monster can spread death and sadness everywhere it goes. The monster exerts a physical prowess, being able to survive a "ball [entering his] shoulder" to "advancing towards [Frankenstein] with superhuman speed." (Shelley Ch 10) Like the monster, fracking companies are very potent, since people like the "head of the EPA" support them and is determined to "dismantle [his own] agency and protections." (Stone) Both fracking companies and the monster have a huge influence on their surroundings, and their power can be used for good or evil. Huxley has stated that consciousness is filtered and diminish by the brain instead of producing (Kripal, 2011). What does Huxley perception of "human potentialities" mean exactly? How I view Huxley's human potentialities is that there are special abilities that the humanity has yet to uncover for the moment. • 21. Corporate Social Responsibility And Human Rights CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBLITY Nicholas S Jones ACED 4050 Valdosta State University March 20, 2016 CORPORATE SOCIAL RESRPONSIBILITY (CSR) Introduction Today, the world faces numerous challenges ranging from dreadful environmental conditions through poverty and human rights, to energy and resource supply issues. Social responsibility policy focuses on using the capabilities of a business to improve lives and sustain our planet through contributions to local communities and society at large. In other words, a business should fully realize it's potential as an organization to make a better world through corporate self–regulation assimilated into a business module. CSR and Human Rights The global community expects companies to operate with due admiration for human rights. Beyond meeting regulatory requirements and social expectations in areas in which they operate, by proactively presenting more rigorous international standards such as the United Nations Global Compact, companies will reinforce their commitment to human rights. In 1998 the Secretary General of the UN, declared that he "was building a more solid relationship with the business community. Thriving markets and human security goes hand in hand: without one we will not have the other" (Annan, 1998, p. 1820). Afterwards, a World Economic Forum was held in 1999. Are you responsible for a sibling, a neighbor, or even a stranger across the world? The short stories I read help me think about the world around me and enlighten my understanding of my personal responsibility to others. First, these short stories show personal responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for the weaker or oppressed members of society. Second, the short stories I read helped me think about to what extent should we be driven by personal responsibility to act with compassion, empathy, and concern for others. Finally, short stories exemplify how we are personally responsible for our friends and how we live our own lives. First, short stories show personal responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for the weaker or oppressed members of society.Throughout the short stories, I have seen how the weaker and oppressed member of society are being helped. For example, in the short story, the "Scarlet Ibis", the narrator has a responsibility, given to him by his mother, to help his younger brother who cannot care for himself. As the narrator says in the story, "It seemed so hopeless from the beginning that it's a miracle I didn't give up. • 27. Human Resource Development : An Element Of Corporate... Human Resource Development – Is this an element of Corporate Social Responsibility or should it be left to the individual autonomy? The function of human resource development (HRD) is fundamentally connected to individual and organisational development. As a result of this fundamental connection, it is ultimately human resource development (HRD) units in organisations that are well positioned to help develop an understanding and implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The purpose of this literature review will be to examine the definition of CSR and the role of HRD in organisations. In considering the function of HRD in response to CSR, there is much inconsistency and debate in defining what exactly constitutes socially responsible practice. The reason for this is corporate social responsibility (CSR) practice occurs in different contexts and is dependent on perceptions to the individual. Ultimately there are gaps in literature, which occur as a result of key problems in defining what CSR is to organisations and the role of HRD professionals. There is much inconsistency and debate in defining what exactly constitutes socially responsible practice. The issue of HRD and it's impact in relation to CSR has been brought to light by the emergence of increased awareness both of the power of corporations in the global economy, and of some of the negative repercussions of global economic activity (Wilcox 2006). • 29. Moral Responsibility In Susan Wolf's Analysis In an attempt to explain moral responsibility, Susan Wolf puts forth a modified version of what she calls the Deep Self View (DSV) first expounded on by Harry Frankfurt, Gary Watson and Charles Taylor (Perry et al. 460–462). The key to her argument the condition of sanity; a deep self must be sane in order to be considered morally responsible. However, I will argue that her attempt fails for the following two reasons: 1. Wolf's definition of sanity is too vague and to be useful and relies on the collective view of lay persons. 2. Wolf raises the bar of moral responsibility so high as to make it nearly impossible to reach and in the process seems to defeat her own argument. Wolf's attempt to make sense of DSV by creating her own definition of sanity (CITATION) does not add clarity to DSV but instead creates more confusion. Her definition seems to rely too heavily on the views of the general population for determining what is and is not sane (CITATION). What is sane then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "...the minimally sufficient ability cognitively and normatively to recognize and appreciate the world for what it is" (Perry et al. 465). In other words, society at large is the yardstick for judging what is and is not to be considered sane and acceptable behavior. While few would object to the role sanity plays in a person's moral responsibility, Wolf's definition of the sane DSV is far too vague and subjective to be of any real value. So, if we accept Wolf's vague definition of the sane DSV and assume our view of the world is the correct one, we may create even bigger problems. All too often the tyranny of the righteous majority has violated the rights of the weak and savage minority. Therefore, it is my argument that Wolf's definition of the sane DSV has the very real potential of creating even more Jo Jo's on an even larger scale. Wolf acknowledges the difficulty of this objection and admits there are no satisfactory answers (Perry et al. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Lord Of The Flies Symbolism Symbols of Lord of the Flies In society murder is considered heinous and unforgivable, yet it is still occurs every day. In "Lord of the Flies", William Golding uses the symbol of the conch and the fire to show that without strict rules in order, human nature implicitly gives into the temptations of savagery. William Golding uses the symbol of the conch to represent power and order in the boy's society, and when it shatters, order is lost, leaving the boys victim to the temptations of savagery. The conch was one of the first things the boys find when they first arrive on the island and is blown to first unite them altogether. This immediately gives the conch a form of power and is continuously used throughout the novel to call important meetings and restore order. When the boys decide to vote for who is chief, most of the boys are inclined to pick Ralph because of his good looks and strong stature, but "most powerfully, there was the conch" (Golding 22). Almost immediately after the boys first come together everyone is already aware of the power of the conch. The conch is the thing that brought them all together, and most of the boys have not even seen a conch before, giving it an even more ominous and controlling vibe. Most importantly the conch represents power and order, which is why the boys use it as a primary factor in choosing the chief, thinking that will bring the most order. To restore order to a meeting Ralph shouts, "'Hear him! He's got the conch!'" (Golding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Impact Of Human Decisions On The Social Responsibility This quote by J.W. Goethe focuses on the impact that human decisions have on their surrounding environments. Goethe's view is that everyone, no matter their status in society, has the ability to make choices that determine their actions which inevitably affect other people either positively or negatively. This can be projected onto the social corporate responsibility context through the various decisions made by business personnel based on their ethical values which directly or indirectly affect their employees and other people in the society as well. People's decisions are often based on their moral perceptions of things. These perceptions are often sculptured by their diverse cultural backgrounds thereby bringing varying moral perceptions of global issues. In corporate social responsibility, the social concept of morality can be traced to the traditional ethical theories attributed to ethical decision making especially among business personnel. These theories can be classified as either non–consequentialist or consequentialist theories. Consequentialist theories often base moral judgements on the results of engaging in a particular action and are often based on intended outcomes, the aims or the goals of the undertaken action. Non–consequentialist theories on the other hand base their moral judgements on the underlying principles of the decision maker's motivation (Crane 2010). Consequentialist theories such as Egoism and utilitarianism often play a big role in the choices ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By using Victor Frankenstein's surname for the creature, there is an implied closeness between the two. Stemming from Victor's refusal to acknowledge the creature and the 'chance' that brought the creature into being. By acknowledging the creature, Victor would be admitting to his mistakes. The creature reveals that before the rejections that created hatred, vengeance and loneliness in him, he was kind and took into consideration his actions and how they affected others. Due to these actions, he believed that his negative emotion arose when his appearance kept him from creating close relationships. Notably, this argument demonstrates that nurture trumps nature and the creature became vengeful due to his treatment by others, originating from Victor's desertion. Victor Frankenstein on the other hand, believed that the creature was born bad and did not develop this behavior. He blames the creation of the creature on the Angel of Destruction, as if the Angel of Destruction planted a seed of evil into the very being of the creature. Thus blaming the actions of the creature on nature rather than nurture. This ideal allows him to dissociate himself from the fact that he created the creature and is responsible for the creature just as a father would be responsible for his child. For the most part the creature and Victor Frankenstein share an unusual bond that helps to reveal their similarities and differences. The recent advent of Critical Management Studies has suggested inconsistency between management in theory that was rather 'rational and technical' as compared to management in practice which was more 'complex' (Cunliffe, 2014). This has led to a re–evaluation of the methods used to conduct management and its specialisms such as Human Resource Management. Over the years, Human Resource Management (HRM) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) have been seen as separate variables in both practice–oriented as well as academic discourses. Employees desire to be identified with an organization that is aligned with its commitment of taking accountability for its activities that may impact the society as well as bringing about a sustainable change. It is thus essential that HRM develops processes that integrate CSR and ethics practices into an organization's brand rather than make it a mere publicity strategy. The prime focus is on the integration of HRM and CSR as a whole, rather than two different entities. • 50. Analysis Of Rajeev Ravisankar's Sweatshop Oppression In his opinion essay, "Sweatshop Oppression," published in the student newspaper, The Lantern, at Ohio State University, writer Rajeev Ravisankar uses his article as a platform to raise awareness about the deplorable conditions in sweatshops. Ravisankar awakens his readers from their slumber and brings to light the fact that they are partly responsible for the problem. His first goal in the essay is to designate college students as conscious consumers who look to purchase goods at the lowest prices. Then he makes the connection between this type of low–cost consumerism and the high human cost that workers are forced to pay in sweatshops. His second goal is to place the real burden of responsibility directly with the companies that perpetuate this system of exploitation. Finally, he proposes what can be done about it. By establishing a relationship that includes himself in the audience, working to assign responsibility to the reader, and keeping them emotionally invested, Ravisankar makes a powerful argument that eventually prompts his student reader to take responsibility for their actions and make a change. For Ravisankar's argument to be effective, he makes a connection with the readers. He accomplishes this by including himself in the audience and, also, by earning their trust. This style of writing uses "us" and "we" in the dialog which establishes himself as being part of the conversation. To make the trust connection with his readers, he first clarifies how their low–cost consumerism is partly responsible for the problem, but he does so in an empathetic way. He sees their position as, "being the poor college students that we all are," which is an understandable way of including himself while consciously giving the students' a personal stake in the argument and assigning them responsibility. In this way, the writer immediately connects with his audience and draws them in by being sympathetic to their needs. After he gains their trust, he works toward gaining sympathy for the worker who are forced to pay the price for the students' irresponsible but unintentional choices. During this discussion of the problem, Ravisankar writes as if he is assuming that the students are unaware of how much their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each one of them is unique in their own ways and one's personality is something that does not change which makes one unique and special. However, some people may act differently. For example, they may act quiet and reserved around their family but around their friends they may feel boisterous and loud. People may feel more comfortable around their family as they can show their true personality. People cover up their true personality sometimes just to appease other people. They do not want to show their true colors in case it leads to humiliation. Some people wear certain clothes just to fit in with a certain group. Others don't voice their true opinions and just go with the flow and don't stand up. The baker in the WAM painting might appear to be haughty and selfish who just tries to sell his products. But I see him as a caring, responsible, independent, and grateful individual who is willing to share his bread to others and give his skills to others with the care. From my personal viewpoint, I feel that I am like this and found it difficult to identify my true internal qualities until I came to America and realize my qualities. The Baker also reminded me of my five greatest strengths: Independence, Caring, Gratitude, Learner, and Responsibility. Independence was always been right up my alley. The methodology used for this study was a qualitative interview process consisting of, "Four employees [that] were sampled within each project, with the exception of one project where three employees were selected. Modern society still feels the need to watch violent events, whether it be at a boxing match or spattered across the cinema screen" (Baker 5). Society today is bombarded with violence. It focuses on moving organizations away from a single bottom–line philosophy (economic) to encouraging organizations to undertake roles traditionally seen as beyond the scope of the profit–seeking organization such as environmental protection, supporting education and involvement in the community. One of the most commonly referenced terms for this is the "triple bottom line" (economic, social and environmental). This bottom focuses on reducing the organization's negative impact on the world and it helps to improve their positive image. CSR is the commitment of a company to behave ethically and to improve its employee's quality of life, while contributing to economic development. Companies are expected to work with CSR and it can be rewarding for both customers and companies. However, CSR can be damaging for a company if it is performed incorrectly. For example, if the organization`s CSR efforts are focused on areas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We have to be straight forward and oriented to the point while expressing our thoughts and views in the form of words. In this situation, knowing a technical word can hit the dart, whereas delivering some other fancy word may create ambiguities. This may result in failure to address the topic properly. However, there is variety not only in the social composition, the race, but also in the literary background. • 71. The Code Red By Lance Corporal Harold Lance Corporal Harold Dawson and Private First Class Louden Downey enter Private First Class Santiago's bunk room to perform a "code red," a form of punishment used by military personal that is not in protocols; the two men were following an order given to them by a superior officer. At Guantanamo Bay orders are taken very seriously. A quote from the film, A Few Good Men, states "they are not permitted to disobey orders," showing that the two men had no other choice "because they were ordered to do it"(Reiner). The men followed through with a code red rather than disobeying direct orders, which is against their beliefs as a unit. So sometimes following an order can cause a series of unfortunate events or worse to happen, but it is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Following commands is a very important part of keeping order. Now imagine a row of blue clad Navy soldiers, carrying out drills in perfect unison, if just one person were to break orders and fail to correctly initiate their portion of the drill it makes every singular other soldier look bad, including themselves, thus creating an incentive to not break orders and not mess up no matter what the situation. Furthermore, should someone always follow orders? In the case of Downey and Dawson following an order ended up getting an innocent man killed. Milgram points out that "the ordinary person who shocked the victim did so out of a sense of obligation – an impression of his duties as a subject" (par 96). Dawson and Downey carried out the requested code red because they felt obligated. As a result, they were obligated to ignore their own personal morals and do the commands of another person. Another explanation is provided by MacDonald is "the mission in way–to get the job done–might at times cause a certain degree of sadism." (par. 8) So, it seems that over time soldiers derive satisfaction from acting out violent orders and because of this and the combined effects of war, they seem to disregard other humans' physical pain which in turn makes taking orders that much easier. This disregard for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Human Rights And Citizen Responsibility Such policy is not legitimate. Citizens should be allowed to freely move and migrant. Their natural rights should always surpass citizen responsibility. However, when their natural rights and citizen responsibility do not contradict with each other, citizens should obey their citizen responsibilities. Citizenship means that the citizen of this country has the nationality of this country and has the rights and the obligations in accordance to the constitution and laws of the state. Citizens should have the rights to vote for the candidate in the election and participate in the politics. Citizens are equal under the laws. Citizens should have the freedom for the speech and the religion. Citizens also have the rights to have the basic education, start the business and keep the possession if the possession is achieved by legal process. When citizens go to another country, they are under the protection of their mother country. At the same time, citizens have the duties to respect the constitution and the laws of the state. Citizens also have the duties to protect the public goods and pay taxes. In order to close the gap between the rich and the poor, it is necessary for governments to enforce the hierarchy of tax laws and it is duty for citizens to pay such taxes. However, when the society climbs its ladder to a status that is mostly equal, citizens will have less and less responsibility to countries and the taxation should be reduced dramatically. Instead, citizens will focus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Theme Of All My Sons By Joe Keller There is nothing ruthless about Joe, no hint of the robber baron in his make up , his ambitions are small a comfortable home for his family, a successful business to pass on to his sons, but he is not completely fastidious in achieving his goals. Joe Keller is the most important character in the play, All My Sons. Miller who wrote All My Sons with human understanding but moral sinew as well as dramaturgy summarised his theme, John Gossner says as, "the responsibility of man to society or the responsibility to the world and outside his home as well as in his own home". Joe Keller is a social, amiable man with a strong sense of humour. Indeed, Joe Keller strikes us as an eminently social man with an amiable nature. When, soon afterwards, ... After having been confronted by Chris with his guilt and his responsibility in the death of Larry as well as other young pilots, Joe begins to realise his guilt and grows a sense of disillusionment with money which he has earned with such a hard labour, for the sake of his family. Joe listened Chris realises Larry's letter. Joe Keller said with broken heart, "They were all my sons" (89). Thus, the exposure of his guilt in the supply of defective cylinder heads, and of the fact of his being responsible for the suicide committed by Larry and the death of 21 young pilots whom he comes to acknowledge as his own sons, pains Joe very much. Joe Keller is a moving character whose place in All My Sons is quite important. Chris Keller, son of Joe Keller, becomes a prototype of a person having moral values of living life. While his father regards the family as the biggest or most important thing in life, he puts the society or humanity as a whole on a higher plane than the individual or the family.

  • 78. Coca Cola 's Responsibility Of Human Rights Violations Coca–Cola's responsibilities include remaining respectful of all cultures and their laws and traditions, maintaining their ethics and values, while being accountable for their actions. They should offer compliance and social good as required by law, yet extends farther than their own interests. Utilitarianism also comes to mind. The company is responsible to society as a whole. Unfortunately, transnational corporations do not seem to be accountable to anyone. In this case, Coca–Cola is responsible to civil society as well as governmental obligation. Approaching business with an operational point of view is seen as a more acceptable method. The company's responsibility to society is that their ethical framework should be a balance between sustainability and that which benefits society collectively. Whether or not Coca–Cola should support bottlers accused of human rights violations is a tricky question. On one hand, there is a definite history of horrific crimes taking place in some of the plants with which they are affiliated. The findings which were determined by the Cal–Safety Workplace Assessment Colombia (CSCC), was quite telling, since the workers did not appear to be fearful in any way. The CSCC also reported that they did have a few serious concerns. If these concerns do not correlate with human rights violations or any more critical violations, then Coca– Cola should continue to support the bottlers. However, the CSCC was criticized for its prior history of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
