The document provides information about video editing lab structure and Windows Movie Maker (WMM) for a multimedia journalism class. It outlines that lab time is built into class sessions and open lab hours are available for working on projects outside of class. It also notes that no late work will be accepted. Instructions are given for downloading and opening WMM, importing video files, and watching tutorial videos to familiarize oneself with the software. Students are advised to save their work to external drives.
2. LAB WORK STRUCTURE
• LAB TIME is built into the structure of the class in order to work on
projects. Even so, students work at different speeds so there are also
OPEN LAB hours you can use to work on your projects outside of
regular class meetings.
• LAB TIME is provided so you can stay on track with specific project
steps in a teaching environment.
• You can also download the software we use to work on your projects
outside of class.
• We have to stay together as a class so once the class lab time
allotted for a project is completed, we’re moving on. Remember -
NO CREDIT FOR LATE WORK! You will have plenty of time to
complete projects, but in order to do so you must attend class and
use the allotted time wisely
3. WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER
• WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER is a video editing
program that is “non-linear” which means it is
digital and non-destructive. No matter what you do
in the program, you don’t alter your original files
(unless you specifically delete them)
• It comes bundled with Windows and you can
download it for free for your own use (it is being
phased out)
• All digital video editing programs work on a similar
structure
• ALWAYS PLUG YOUR HEADPHONES IN BEFORE
STARTING PROGRAM!
4. • Go to the appropriate week’s folder and save
the file “PRACTICE MP4 VIDEO FILE-Raw
Footage Train vs Truck” to your USB drive in a
folder called “MMJ VIDEO”
• You should each have an WINDOWS MOVIE
MAKER icon on your desktop and/or on your
START MENU that looks like this:
• Double click it to open the program
WMM EXERCISE PRACTICE
5. • Within WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER (WMM) click on the “Add
videos and photos” button at the top and and select
“PRACTICE MP4 VIDEO FILE-Raw Footage Train vs Truck”
which you just saved to your USB drive
WMM EXERCISE PRACTICE
6. • After the MP4 file imports, your WMM canvas/layout
should look like this with one video file visible on the
timeline
WMM EXERCISE PRACTICE
7. WMM EXERCISE PRACTICE
• Now go to the appropriate folder and watch the
WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER tutorial video – it will
provide basic information about WINDOWS
MOVIE MAKER and how you can use it to edit
video
• Use the imported PRACTICE FILE to use for while
you watch the video
• The purpose of this is to familiarize yourself with
WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER
8. WMM EXERCISE/PRACTICE
• There’s only one of me so learn to help yourself
by using readily available resources about the
WMM software USE THE SUPPLIED RESOURCES
AND THE INTERNET – there is no shortage of
WMM Help out there
• SAVE YOUR PERSONAL WORK TO YOUR OWN
USB DRIVE! IF YOU LEAVE IT ON THE PC YOU’RE
WORKING ON, YOU COULD LOSE IT WHEN IT IS
REBOOTED! Lost work due to improper saving is
the same as not doing it in the first place
9. LAB TIME ATTENDANCE
•If you don’t come to class during LAB
TIME sessions you will most likely fall
behind – the PowerPoints are
designed to be as simple to follow as
possible but there is simply no
substitute for in-person instruction
