RAW VIDEO
LOGGING
EXERCISE
C O M M 1 0 6 : M U LT I M E D I A J O U R N A L I S M
• Go to the appropriate week and save the file
“PRODUCTION EXERCISE MP4 VIDEO FILE-
Raw NY Prison Break” to a folder called “MMJ
VIDEO” on your DESKTOP (you will backup to
your USB drive later)
• You should each have an ADOBE
PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS icon on your
desktop and/or on your START MENU that
looks something like this:
• Double click it to open the program and
choose VIDEO EDITOR – NEW PROJECT
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE

•You can also complete this
exercise simply by
downloading and watching
the video in whatever
player program you desire
– you just need to be able
to see it and know its TIME
CODE.

• Choose “EXPERT” mode from choices above – the
following instructions are based on this mode
• Within ADOBE PREMIERE ELEMENTS (APE) click on the
“Add Media” section at the top
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
• Go to FILES AND FOLDER and navigate to
“PRODUCTION EXERCISE MP4 VIDEO FILE-Raw NY
Prison Break” which you just saved to your MMJ VIDEO
folder on the DESKTOP
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
• Once added you should see the video in PROJECT
ASSETS and the program will conform the video so you
can view/edit it
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
• After the MP4 file imports, you DRAG IT DOWN INTO THE
TIMELINE AREA SO IT LANDS ON VIDEO 1 and AUDIO 1
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
You can now watch and listen to the imported file through
your headphones
Simply hit the SPACE bar to start the video or use the
control buttons underneath the preview screen

Just as with Audacity, you can move around the file by
moving the Blue PLAYHEAD to where you want to
start/edit
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
•So you’ve got over five minutes of
footage – now what?
•Before you start any editing you
need to know what you have to
work with so LOGGING VIDEO
FOOTAGE IS ESSENTIAL!
•Download the LOGSHEET TEMPLATE
from Blackboard via the appropriate
folder

• Starting at the beginning and using the TIME
CODE display you’re going to go through the
footage and LOG what’s there on your
LOGSHEET

CODE display you’re going to go through the
footage and LOG what’s there on your
LOGSHEET
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
• Watch the entire Raw Video and record the basics of
what you see and hear on your logsheet alongside the
provided timecode information with any other notes
you might have:
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
• List each shot’s time code duration in minutes and
seconds
– (00:08 – 00:12, for example)
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
• List each shot’s video description by recording what you see and
what kind of basic shot it is (field of view):
– (“Wide shot (WS)/EL; 2 trooper vehicles – one in foreground,
one in background” for example)
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
• List each shot’s sound content – if it’s an
INTERVIEW/SOUND BITE transcribe/paraphrase the
entire sound content!
RAW VIDEO LOGGING EXERCISE
• Use the notes column for other information
about the shoot you want to record
– “Good search shot” for example

• Once you fully complete the 4-page Video Footage
Logsheet you will submit it via Blackboard – this is for a
PRODUCTION EXERCISE grade
APE EXERCISE PART #1

• There’s only one of me so learn to help yourself
by using readily available resources about the APE
software USE THE SUPPLIED RESOURCES AND
THE INTERNET – there is no shortage of APE Help
out there
• BACKUP YOUR PERSONAL WORK TO YOUR OWN
USB DRIVE! AT THE END OF CLASS DRAG YOUR
ENTIRE MMJ VIDEO FOLDER TO YOUR USB DRIVE
TO COPY/BACK IT UP
• Lost work due to improper saving is the same as
not doing it in the first place
LAB TIME ATTENDANCE
•If you don’t come to class during LAB
TIME sessions you will most likely fall
behind – the PowerPoints are
designed to be as simple to follow as
possible but there is simply no
substitute for in-person instruction
