John Steinbeck A novelist is someone who writes novels, or writes a fancy work of fiction which
often has a complicated plot, many major and minor characters, a significant theme, and several
varied settings. A novelist will use literary devices such as characterization, tone, symbolism,
imagery, and figurative language. John Steinbeck, an American novelist, uses manyliterary devices
such as metaphors, similes, imagery, and figurative language along with excellent descriptive words
to develop his characters and vividly describe their surroundings. His masterly of these and other
techniques, in my opinion, is why John Steinbeck's novels, like The Grape's of Wrath and Of Mice

Joseph was a Jungian and a mythologist. He also was the person responsible for getting
Steinbeck's Pastures of Heaven published later that year. In 1933, Joseph also helped publish To
a God Unknown and The Red Pony Stories. 1934 was an extremely tragic year for Mr. Steinbeck,
the year began good when his story, "The Murder", appeared in O. Henry Prize Stories. Later that
year, John was dealt a tremendous blow when his mother died. John was so upset that he did not
write anything for another year. Then when he began to recover and start writing again, his father
died in 1936. At that time, John Steinbeck was about half way through writing Of Mice and Men.
Again because of John's despair, he was not able to finish this book right away. But finally he was
able to finish it in 1937, and it was published and became his first best seller. In 1939, Steinbeck's
had his favorite year, John was elected to The National Institute of Arts and Letters. He also
published his Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Grapes of Wraith. The year of 1944 had many
ups and downs for John Steinbeck. A wonderful event was the birth of his first son on the second
of August. John had to fight to have his name removed from the credits of Lifeboat because he
believed he did not believe in racism and he believed it was involved and promoted in the film. In
1962, Steinbeck was honored again with the award of The Nobel Prize in literature.

John Steinbeck's "The Chrysanthemums" shows the true feelings of the main character, Elisa Allen,
through the use of setting and her interactions with other characters in the story. By way of vivid
descriptions, Elisa's feelings of dissatisfaction over the lack of excitement in her life are portrayed.
Her role as a mere housewife and then the subsequent change to feelings of a self–assured woman

In the portion of the story where Elisa is talking to the "Fixer–Guy" who happens to pull down the
road to her farm, Steinbeck shows Elisa's eagerness for attention and how she comes to the
realization that there is a more exciting life outside the farm. In the "Fixer–Guy", Elisa finds
somebody who sees her as more than a housewife, someone who can appreciate her from an
unbiased viewpoint. He offers his services and she turns him down saying "I tell you I have
nothing like that for you to do." At first she resists conversation with him. Then when he asks
about her plants Steinbeck writes "The irritation and resistance melted from Elisa's face." "I raise
them every year, bigger than anybody around here", she boasts. She is now very eager to talk
about her chrysanthemums. Elisa's face becomes "tight with eagerness" as she talks about them,
as if they were her children. The vibes from her infatuation with these flowers are picked up by
the old man, and there is an unspoken connection between these two perfect strangers as they have

	One of John friends found him a job at Lake Tahoe in June of 1925. His plan was to make
enough money to become a freelance writer in New York City. Low on funds John signed on as a
working berth on a freighter headed to New York is November of 1925. When he arrived in New
York John got a job as a newspaper cub reporter. He finally seemed to a secure job and things
seemed alright. After a couple of months working as a reported John realized that he did not fit this
kind of job. "Due to his lack of experience John was never given a chance to show his talent
and he was given unimportant assignments with no value"(Morrow 75). Numerous times he
failed to show up at work and was soon after fired.
	Barely scraping by John wrote a collection of short stories. He went to two publishing
companies and he was shot down by both. One explained that they would not publish an unknown
writer, they other refused to publish short stories. Heart–broken and broke John got a job as a waiter
on a California bound freighter and headed back to his old job at Lake Tahoe.
	To just make things a little harder for John when he arrived at his old job, winter was close
behind and he got snowed in for eight months. He took advantage of this time and wrote A Cup of

Then, writers can present a true picture of life in their work. The microbiologist Edward F. Ricketts,

John Steinbeck was influenced by Ricketts's non–teleological thinking. As a result, his works are

Non–teleological thinking is based on the profound consideration of reality. It is primary concern
about what life is about rather than what life should be or why things happen. Steinbeck believed
that non–teleological thinking is a good way to stay close to reality and understand an aspect of life.

3. Writing Style and Technique
3.1 Description of Natural Scenery
It is worth noticing that the author uses present tense to portray the natural scenery at the beginning
of chapter one. The nature scene described in this novel truly exists in the reality. Steinbeck uses his
hometown as the setting.

Water is also an essential part of Steinbeck's connection of setting to familial conflict, with the lack
of water sowing seeds of discontent in both families, though Steinbeck's aforementioned theme of
choice between good and evil defines what both families do with such misfortune. Lack of water on
their property allows the Hamiltons to grow closer, with Samuel's disappointment with his lack of
success in farming being outweighed by his joy in his children, "Water would have made them
comparatively rich...all in all it was a good firm–grounded family....Samuel was well pleased with
the fruit of his loins," (Steinbeck 507). By contrast, the drought of the land in Adam's family is
representative of the lack of parenting, how Adam is completely devoid of emotion once Cathy
leaves, "Adam looked more gaunt than Samuel remembered. His eyes were dull, as though he did
not use them much for seeing," (655). This juxtaposition is further emphasized by Samuel's
biblical connection, as Samuel was a prophet, a man who could see into the future and thus see
the value in raising children despite the difficulties while Adam cannot see beyond his own
hardship. Furthermore, the lack of water enrichs the idea that if a family preserves through such
difficulties, they will be greatly rewarded, "And the Lord will continually guide you, and satisfy
your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones, and you will be like a watered

This novel sold 10,000 copies per week, and eventually leading him to earning the Pulitzer Prize
in 1940. He continued to write in his later years. During World War II, he was a war
correspondent for the New York Herald Tribute. Some of his later published novels were Burning
Bright, 1950, East of Eden, 1952, and The Winter of Our Discontent, 1961. He later earned the
Noble Prize for Literature in 1962 for "his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do
sympathetic humored keen social perception" (John Steinbeck – Biographical). There were many
people who disagreed with him earning this, but with what he had written, it was simply logical
for him to earn his Nobel Prize. He had multiple inspirations for his novels in his years. He had
travelled to Mexico to gather marine life with his marine biologist friend, Edward F. Ricketts.
From this inspiration he wrote Sea of Cortez in 1941. He would also listen to the stories of
homeless people and their lives, and from this he created Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. He
had also travelled with a friend, Horace Bristol, to California one time in his career and done

In 1902, John Steinbeck, a renowned twentieth century novelist was born in Salinas, California.
Before he was born his father moved to the West and became a manager at a flower mill; he later
married a strong characterized woman named Olive Hamilton. Because the Steinbeck family
became well known in Salinas, Mrs. Steinbeck was involved in many social activities. As a child,
this caused Steinbeck and his two sisters to believe that she spent more time with others than she
does with them. However, when she was home, Mrs. Steinbeck encouraged their literary efforts and
kept them busy with books and magazines. John Steinbeck soon came to love Malory's Le Morte
d'Arthur stories of the Kings at the Round Table.
Growing up, John Steinbeck exceeded in writing but as for athletics, sports were not his forte. He
was said to be a constant rebel and loner who drove people away. When graduating from Stanford

wife Carol Henning. During his second marriage with Gwyndolyn Conger he had two sons named
Thomas and John. His marriage with Gwyndolyn lasted until he met Elaine Scott 1949. It was not
until 1949 when he met his third wife Elaine Scott. This marriage was a success; unlike his other
wives she was very loving and certain of herself. This helped John Steinbeck find the strength to

Coming of his success in high school John felt very confidante that he would succeed. To pay for
his education John went to school half a year and worked the other half. John found college boring
and felt that he was a &quot;writer in training&quot;(Ito, 14) not a college student. After
