2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
“A Descriptive study to assess the
knowledge regarding hemodialysis
and self care among patients
undergoing hemodialysis at selected
hospitals of Hubli, Karnataka.”
3. OBJECTIVES
To assess the knowledge regarding
hemodialysis and self care among the
patients undergoing hemodialysis.
To find out an association between
knowledge scores of patients undergoing
hemodialysis and their selected
demographic variables.
4. HYPOTHESES
H1: There will be association between
the knowledge scores of patient
undergoing hemodialysis and their
selected demographic variables at 0.05
level of significance.
5. KEY WORDS…
Hemodialysis: Hemodialysis is the
process of circulation of patient’s blood
through an artificial membrane(Dialyzer)
which acts as a semi permeable membrane
to remove waste products and excess
fluids.
6. Self- care: Refers to a modality which
introduces the patient into a continuum of
care ranging from dependency to
independency. greater knowledge of the
dialytic process itself is achieved. it is
thus a means by which patients can again
achieve an active and meaningful lifestyle
associated with a feeling of physical and
emotional wellbeing.
8. SAMPLING
Target Population : patients undergoing
hemodialysis.
Sample size : 100
Sampling Technique : Purposive
Setting : Dialysis units of KLE’S Heart
Hospital and central Hospital, South
Western Railway, Hubli.
9. o Variable :
Dependent Variable : knowledge
regarding hemodialysis and self care
among patients undergoing hemodialysis.
ExtraneousVariables: Age, sex,
occupation, family income, dietary
pattern, type of family, religion,
residential area, period of undergoing
dialysis treatment. Frequency of dialysis
and source of information.
10. Instruments
Section A- It includes the personal and
socio-demographic.
Section B- Includes 42 knowledge based
items regarding the hemodialysis and self
care among patients undergoing
hemodialysis. These items are categorized
into 4 parts
11. Data Collection Procedure
Formal administrative permission was
obtained from the ethical committee and
Director of K.L.E’S Heart Hospital,
central Hospital southwestern, Hubli.
12. Demographic Characteristics
Maximum number of patients undergoing
hemodialysis 53% belongs to age group
41-60 years.
Majority of patients undergoing
hemodialysis 74% were females.
Maximum number of patients undergoing
hemodialysis qualification is secondary
school education.
13. Majority of patients undergoing
hemodialysis 50% are income less than
Rs.1,00,000 per year.
Majority of patients undergoing
hemodialysis 55% are vegetarian
Majority of patients undergoing
hemodialysis 53% are Nuclear type of
family.
14. Pie graph showing the percentage distribution of patients
undergoing hemodialysis according to their residential area
15. Pie graph showing the percentage distribution of patients
undergoing hemodialysis to years of dialysis treatment
16. Pie graph showing the percentage distribution of
patients undergoing hemodialysis according to
their frequency of dialysis
17. Cylindrical graph showing the percentage distribution
of patients undergoing hemodialysis according to
their associated illness/diseases
18. Bar graph showing Mean, median, mode, Standard
deviation and range of knowledge score of patients
undergoing hemodialysis
19. Pie graph showing the Frequency percentage
distribution of knowledge score of patient
undergoing hemodialysis
20. Conclusion
The over all knowledge regarding
hemodialysis and self care, among
patients undergoing hemodialysis was
inadequate, therefore the finding reveal
varying degree of knowledge in different
aspects of hemodialysis and self care.
There is need for improvement in the level
of knowledge regarding hemodialysis and
self care of patient undergoing
hemodialysis.
21. Supporting study..
Similar findings were reported by a
previous study done by Bhuvanesh S,
Amandeep K in Selected Hospital of
Punjab, to assess knowledge and attitude
regarding self care among patients
undergoing hemodialysis
22. The study was conducted among 44
patients undergoing hemodialysis. The
finding showed that 25% of patients had
excellent knoweldge regarding self care
followed by 22.73% of patients had below
average knowledge. It was also confirmed
that most of the patients undergoing
hemodialysis i.e 63.64% have moderately
positive attitude towards self care followed
by 36.36% of patients having highly
positive attitude towards self care.
23. It was confirmed that there exists a
moderately positive correlation
between knowledge and attitude i.e
with the increase in knowledge there
will be positive attitude of patients
regarding self care.
