Easter at Phoenix
All Phoenix students participated in Easter activities during the
Easter period earlier this month.
On Thursday, April 2, under the guidance of our Art teacher Mr An,
the students learnt the traditional method of decorating Easter eggs
and they all got the opportunity to decorate their own eggs.
Then the following day all the students participated in an Easter egg
hunt, finding eggs that had been hidden earlier by the ―Easter Bunny‖.
Events of this nature help children to understand major celebrations
and festivities from around the world.

New Faces at Phoenix
Hello everyone. My full name is Hoang Tran
Mai Trang and I am a graduate from Hue Col-
lege of Economics. I love children so much
and that is why I feel excited to be a member
of the Phoenix staff. I now work as an Admin
Officer for the Kindergarten, Primary and
Secondary School. I look forward to
contributing to the development of Phoenix
Education.
My name is Nguyen Tran Bao Vy and I graduated
from the Hue College of Music Education. I have
lived in Hue with my family since I was born. I am
happy to be a music teacher at Phoenix Education.
My name is Hang and I live in Hue with my
family. I studied English of Education at Hue
University College of Foreign Languages. I
love children very much so I have become a
kindergarten teacher at Phoenix Education. I
have worked here since February 25th
, 2015. I
will try my best to learn from the working ex-
periences and knowledge in the educational
field from other colleagues and perform the job
effectively.

Xin chao everyone! My name is Abby Faires, and I’m a
new American teacher here at Phoenix. I’m from Rich-
mond, Virginia, but I’ve called Denver, Colorado—
where I graduated with a B.A. in Journalism—home for
the past 6 years.
I’ve always had a strong passion for writing, traveling,
and communication. But it wasn’t until I began work-
ing as a math interventionist with a non-profit organiza-
tion in Denver, that my eyes were opened to a new
world of teaching and working with young learners.
That experience ignited a fire within me to pursue a
career in teaching English—a fire, when coupled with
my love for travel and experiencing new cultures, has
brought me to teach in Vietnam.
Words cannot express how grateful I am to have found
the extraordinary team of educators here at Phoenix,
tucked away in the alluring city of Hue. Thanks to eve-
ryone who has welcomed me with open arms thus far. I
look forward to growing as a teacher with Phoenix and
meeting you all soon!
Hello everyone! My name is Duoc. I live at Hue
City. I completed my teaching diploma at Thua
Thien Hue College of Education and now I am a
new teacher at Phoenix Education. I like the profes-
sional atmosphere and active environment. I feel
happy to work with children and look after them. My
hobby is listening to music and I really love travel-
ling, too. My ambition is to become a good teacher
in this international educational environment.

Visit Phoenix
On Sunday, March 29, 36 teachers from a very large
Thai primary school, visited Phoenix School and met
with our teachers to share and exchange ideas.
The teachers were from Anuban Primary School in
Udon Thani Province, which is about 600km north-east
of Bangkok. (See map) Anuban Primary School has
more than 3000 students and 250 teachers.
The teachers were on an educational tour of Hue, Da
Nang and Hoi An.

Pass Karate Grading Test
On Saturday, March 28, three Phoenix students, Tyler,
Shawnee and BJ went for their Karate Gradings test. The
following report was written by Tyler, Grade 5.
Last Saturday week, Shawnee and I took a karate test for brown belt
and BJ took a test for green belt. When we got there our karate
teacher, Mr Loi asked my mom and dad to relax and have a coffee
while he talked to us about what to expect.
About 45 minutes later the test started. Shawnee and I were one of
the last ones to take the test. BJ took the test first because he was
going for green belt. Shawnee and I were the only people going for
brown belt. After I performed my kata I needed to go downstairs
and go to Mr Loi’s house to karate-chop bricks. Shawnee just
needed chop one brick but I had to chop two bricks, one with each
hand. I could only break one brick but I still passed. Shawnee broke
one brick as well. After that all we had to do was watch everyone
else finish their tests.
We were all happy to have passed our tests.

I Hate Harry
I hate Harry like...like...OOO!
I hate Harry like...GEE!
I hate that Harry like...poison.
I hate! Hate! Hate! HAR-RY!
Rat! Dope! Skunk! Bum! Liar!
Dumber than the dumbest dumb flea!
BOY!...do I hate Harry,
I hate him the most that can be.
I hate him a hundred, thousand million
Doubled, and multiplied by three,
A skillion, trillion, zillion more times
Than Harry, that rat, hates me.
Miriam Chaikin
Why Run?
Jane won’t touch a caterpillar,
Mary’s frightened of a mouse,
Sally shrieks and runs for Daddy
When a moth flies in the house.
Pam’s afraid of shiny beetles,
Spiders make Melinda squirm,
Susan nearly has HYS-TER-ICS
If you chase her with a worm.
Aren’t they foolish to be frightened?
Fancy making such a fuss
Over harmless creepy-crawlies
Who are scared to death—of US.
Norah Smaridge
Shawnee:
I like “I Hate Harry” be-
cause it is funny. I especially like
the way he said he hated Harry “a
skillion, trillion, zillion more times
than Harry, that rat, hates me.”
BJ:
I like “Why Run?” when it
said “Aren’t they foolish to be
frightened?” and where it says
“Spiders make Melinda squirm”

KARATE KIDS ARE KICKING KINGS
Sunday 29th March 2015
This semester I have been writing limericks and poems using
different styles such as alliteration and similes. Here are some
limericks I made that use alliteration with pictures.
Tia the talking turtle tried to tie
his tongue around the tall tree.
Dean the dumb kid likes to play
with a drum. Dozy Dean
dropped the drum down into the
dump.
Yesterday B.J. Russell and brothers
Shawnee and Tyler Troha joined kids
from other schools in Hue at the Hue
Dojo. They were there because B.J.
had to perform katas to get a green belt,
and the Troha brothers had to chop
bricks and perform katas to get brown
belts. Katas are karate movements that
students practice to help their move-
ments. When it was Tyler and Shawnees
turn, they had to perform many katas
and use their hands to make the bricks
explode. Shawnee said “I was kind of
nervous and scared but after the first
test I felt proud of myself.” In the end,
B.J., Tyler and Shawnee all passed their
tests and new belts. Their karate master
I recently took the IELTS exam in Da Nang City. I came home from school on the 27th
of March.
After that, I took a shower and checked my luggage. My friend came to our house at 5pm to take
us to Da Nang, but my mom was stuck at work so we had to wait until after 6 o’clock to get go-
ing. We arrived in Da Nang at 9:20 pm and checked in to our hotel. The weather was awful; it
rained the whole night so we had to call room service to bring us some fried rice.
The next morning, we ate an early breakfast and called a taxi. While we were waiting for the taxi,
the hotel’s porter recognized us because he used to come to my mom and dad’s clinic. My mom
told him to treat us just like he treated every other guest so we would not feel awkward. At the test
place, which was called ELI, all the candidates waited in room 6 on the sixth floor for ten minutes.
Ten minutes later, the examiners called out names and everybody took their seats. I was in room 2
with 49 other candidates.
The atmosphere inside the room was very comfortable. First, I took the listening test. After the lis-
tening test, I did a reading test, which was very difficult but I figured it out how to do it. Next was
writing test. I had to describe a diagram and talk about how computers and mobile phones affected
the students reading and writing skills. I took the speaking test in the afternoon. We walked to ELI
at 1:30 because my test was at 1:40. While we were walking, it rained heavily and we got so wet. I
changed my shirt inside the elevator because the old one was soaking. The speaking test was
about health and what can people do to stay healthy. It lasted for 15 minutes.
After the test, my mom and I stayed in our room because we could not go anywhere in the rainy
weather. But it was fine because the hotel room was very nice. At 6pm, we went to Starbeef Res-
taurant to have dinner. I ordered chicken with honey sauce and it was amazing. We came back to
Hue the next morning at 9.
Overall, I think I did well on the test and now I just have to wait for the results.

On Thursday, April 2, under the guidance of our Art teacher Mr An, the students learnt the traditional method of decorating Easter eggs and they all got the opportunity to decorate their own eggs. Then the following day all the students participated in an Easter egg hunt, finding eggs that had been hidden earlier by the ―Easter Bunny‖. Events of this nature help children to understand major celebrations and festivities from around the world. (More Easter Photos—Page 14)

  • 3. Xin chao everyone! My name is Abby Faires, and I’m a new American teacher here at Phoenix. I’m from Rich- mond, Virginia, but I’ve called Denver, Colorado— where I graduated with a B.A. in Journalism—home for the past 6 years. I’ve always had a strong passion for writing, traveling, and communication. But it wasn’t until I began work- ing as a math interventionist with a non-profit organiza- tion in Denver, that my eyes were opened to a new world of teaching and working with young learners. That experience ignited a fire within me to pursue a career in teaching English—a fire, when coupled with my love for travel and experiencing new cultures, has brought me to teach in Vietnam. Words cannot express how grateful I am to have found the extraordinary team of educators here at Phoenix, tucked away in the alluring city of Hue. Thanks to eve- ryone who has welcomed me with open arms thus far. I look forward to growing as a teacher with Phoenix and meeting you all soon! Hello everyone! My name is Duoc. I live at Hue City. I completed my teaching diploma at Thua Thien Hue College of Education and now I am a new teacher at Phoenix Education. I like the profes- sional atmosphere and active environment. I feel happy to work with children and look after them. My hobby is listening to music and I really love travel- ling, too. My ambition is to become a good teacher in this international educational environment. New Faces at Phoenix (cont) Ms. Abby Ms. Duoc

  • 5. Phoenix Students Pass Karate Grading Test On Saturday, March 28, three Phoenix students, Tyler, Shawnee and BJ went for their Karate Gradings test. The following report was written by Tyler, Grade 5. Last Saturday week, Shawnee and I took a karate test for brown belt and BJ took a test for green belt. When we got there our karate teacher, Mr Loi asked my mom and dad to relax and have a coffee while he talked to us about what to expect. About 45 minutes later the test started. Shawnee and I were one of the last ones to take the test. BJ took the test first because he was going for green belt. Shawnee and I were the only people going for brown belt. After I performed my kata I needed to go downstairs and go to Mr Loi’s house to karate-chop bricks. Shawnee just needed chop one brick but I had to chop two bricks, one with each hand. I could only break one brick but I still passed. Shawnee broke one brick as well. After that all we had to do was watch everyone else finish their tests. We were all happy to have passed our tests. • 12. Grade Five KARATE KIDS ARE KICKING KINGS Sunday 29th March 2015 This semester I have been writing limericks and poems using different styles such as alliteration and similes. Here are some limericks I made that use alliteration with pictures. Tia the talking turtle tried to tie his tongue around the tall tree. Dean the dumb kid likes to play with a drum. Dozy Dean dropped the drum down into the dump. Yesterday B.J. Russell and brothers Shawnee and Tyler Troha joined kids from other schools in Hue at the Hue Dojo. They were there because B.J. had to perform katas to get a green belt, and the Troha brothers had to chop bricks and perform katas to get brown belts. Katas are karate movements that students practice to help their move- ments. When it was Tyler and Shawnees turn, they had to perform many katas and use their hands to make the bricks explode. Shawnee said “I was kind of nervous and scared but after the first test I felt proud of myself.” In the end, B.J., Tyler and Shawnee all passed their tests and new belts. Their karate master
  • 13. I recently took the IELTS exam in Da Nang City. I came home from school on the 27th of March. After that, I took a shower and checked my luggage. My friend came to our house at 5pm to take us to Da Nang, but my mom was stuck at work so we had to wait until after 6 o’clock to get go- ing. We arrived in Da Nang at 9:20 pm and checked in to our hotel. The weather was awful; it rained the whole night so we had to call room service to bring us some fried rice. The next morning, we ate an early breakfast and called a taxi. While we were waiting for the taxi, the hotel’s porter recognized us because he used to come to my mom and dad’s clinic. My mom told him to treat us just like he treated every other guest so we would not feel awkward. At the test place, which was called ELI, all the candidates waited in room 6 on the sixth floor for ten minutes. Ten minutes later, the examiners called out names and everybody took their seats. I was in room 2 with 49 other candidates. The atmosphere inside the room was very comfortable. First, I took the listening test. After the lis- tening test, I did a reading test, which was very difficult but I figured it out how to do it. Next was writing test. I had to describe a diagram and talk about how computers and mobile phones affected the students reading and writing skills. I took the speaking test in the afternoon. We walked to ELI at 1:30 because my test was at 1:40. While we were walking, it rained heavily and we got so wet. I changed my shirt inside the elevator because the old one was soaking. The speaking test was about health and what can people do to stay healthy. It lasted for 15 minutes. After the test, my mom and I stayed in our room because we could not go anywhere in the rainy weather. But it was fine because the hotel room was very nice. At 6pm, we went to Starbeef Res- taurant to have dinner. I ordered chicken with honey sauce and it was amazing. We came back to Hue the next morning at 9. Overall, I think I did well on the test and now I just have to wait for the results. By Bob—Grade 9 My IELTS Exam (International English LanguageTesting System) Bob wrote about the IELTS exam he un- dertook in Da Nang as part of his plans to continue his studies overseas next year in Grade 10.
