Activities Description
Cleaning/ Preparation of pen The pen was prepared by removing old
litter. We cleaned and disinfected the
Walls, floors and cracks. We wash down
the pen with boiling hot water in case
there were any diseases.
Preparation of Brooder The floor of the brooderwas constructed
1 foot for one broiler. It was covered with
a cardboard that was from a fridge box. A
hundred watt bulb was placed about 18
inches above the floor though the
cardboard. A drinker was placed on the
floor and filled with water. 2 feeders was
placed hanging over the brooderabout18
inches as well.
Purchased of chicks We received 30 chicks from Baker
Enterprises in Kingstown.
Arrival of chicks The brooderhousing temperature was
measured. The temperature showed about
95 F. The Feeders and drinkers were filled
1 hour before the chick’s arrival. Vitamin
was added to the water to comeback
stress.
The water and feed levels were
maintained regularly.
4. Once a day the chickens were fed while
the litter was raked. After three weeks
they were being fed broiler starter and
they were moved to a larger pen than the
brooder.
Weighting of chicks The weight of the chickens were recorded
after they were weighted once a week and
at 6 weeks they had an average weight of
4 pounds.
Slaughtering and Dressing A live chicken was taken and the
feathers were plucked using a plucking
machine. After the feathers were plucked
the chicken was washed and dried, it was
placed in boiling hot water at 60 C.
Marketing The schoolstaff was very anxious to buy
the chickens because of the upcoming
Christmas season.
