• Capital and largest city in Croatia, Zagreb is located in
the hinterland, on the slopes of the mountains
Medven, about 150 km from the beautiful coastline.
A crucial geographic position, as well as making an
important crossroads for trade between Central
Europe and the Adriatic, allows its residents to
address the hot sultry summers, thanks to its
proximity to the fantastic bays and beaches along the
coast. The charm of Zagreb, as well as in the Central
European suaeleganza, lies in its morphology: it
develops between hill and plain, splitting into Upper
town (Gornji grad) and Lower Town (Donji Grad). The
first, the oldest, is located on the hills Kaptol and
Gradec and the second, of the nineteenth century,
extends to its slopes until the route of the railway.
Ancient churches and monuments neoclassical
alternate so buildings more modern style and at the
same time, the streets and alleys of the past, give
way to ring roads and bypasses. Among the major
monuments of the capital's political, economic and
cultural life of Croatia, the cathedral, the Bane Jelacic
square, the church of San Marco
• In central Croatia, south of Zagreb, it was customary
to gather some girls called "ladarche" for the party in
early summer. The tradition was that the girls were
singing in front of every house in the village an
ancient ceremonial song to wish you well. These
songs had a word they had in common: the archaic
Slavic word "Lado", which means good, nice, nice.
From this echo ancient named the most prestigious
folk ensemble of Croatia, spokesperson worldwide
the rich musical and dance traditions of small and
strategic European country. Founded in Zagreb in
1949, Lado is a group of thirty-four professional
dancers, who are also skilled singers, whose
repertoire ranges in more than a hundred titles
representing the culture of the country. Alongside
them fourteen great virtuoso musicians in handling a
wide range of traditional instruments. The company
is also renowned for a curiosity: a rich wardrobe
consists of more than 1200 costumes, some of which
date back to the very first '900.
