I delivered this talk in a Teacher Orientation Programme on 27th July, 2014 at Nivedita School in Odisha. It was an orientation programme where teachers from English medium schools participated.
1. A New Approach based on NCFTE (National
Curriculum Framework for Teacher
Education,2009,NCTE)

2. Who are we ?
Men and women, teachers, Bhatliaa, Mulbaariaa, Keshaipalia
What are we ?
Men and women made up of flesh and blood having a thinking
and decision making stuff (call it mind, call it brain). We eat,
drink, sleep, share or communicate.
Why are we here ?
Do you agree that we are communicative beings ? If yes, we
are here for communication, that to effective communication.
What are we doing ?
We are sitting. We are looking at one another. We are
listening. We are talking.
3. Who was ?
Authoritative, prescriptive, self-centered
Who is ?
Democratic, descriptive, student-centered
4. Who was ?
Memorizer, blind-follower, taking things for
granted
Who is ?
Questioning, logical, creative
5. What was ?
House of fear and stress, teacher-centric
What is ?
House of no fear, house of play, student-
centric
6. It is not a static one. All three are concrete
objects. They influence one another. The
relationship changes among them. Teacher
has a socio-cultural-political religious
background, likewise a student has. The
classroom is a meeting place of various
backgrounds. Background counters the
background. It may affect the relationship
of meeting.
7. Education is not a mechanical activity of information
transmission and teachers are not information
dispensers. Teachers need to be looked at as crucial
mediating agents through whom curriculum is
transacted and knowledge is co-constructed along with
learners. Textbooks by themselves do not help in
developing knowledge and understanding.
Learning is not confined to the four walls of the
classroom. For this to happen, there is a need to
connect knowledge to life outside the school …making
it less textbook-centered. (NCFTE,2009)
8. Sir, I want to sit here.
Sir, I want to go with X & Y.
Sir, I could not do my home work.
Sir, he is scolding me.
9. The teacher must have in-depth
understanding of various psycho-social-
cultural factors which affect learning and
the learners. For this, the teacher may take
the help of the learner’s parents. So as to
modify the behavior and attitude of the
learners.
10. Why are you sitting alone, Raju ?
Why are you upset ?
Is it because of your low performance ?
Did anybody scold you ?
11. No teacher and no student should feel
isolated in school. As school is an
educational institution and a social one,
there should not be any differences based
on caste, class, gender and religion. At the
same time, there should not be any visible
different attitude on performance.
12. I have dictated the answers now. You mug
up ! ( You are giving an order to a creative
creature.)
Present approach: Are you getting it ? If
yes, write your own answers in your own
words.
13. Not all the students are same. Not all the
teachers are same. Talented students
should be given a different attention and
others should be developed as per their
competency.
14. A. Neither the student nor the teacher exists in isolation. They are
related. They come to school with many worlds(social, religious,
cultural).
B. Teaching children is a highly serious profession. This teaching
should be interesting, interactive, informative and effective. While
teaching a child, remember that you are teaching a soul for a
lifetime.
C. Books are not the all-in-all and as a teacher you are not the all-
in-all. Education is a mutual affair, doesn't take place only with
books, doesn't take place only with teachers or doesn't take place
only in schools, it takes place with all.
D. Teacher should go abroad. No student should be left out in
accessing the advanced technology. Update your knowledge and
skills. Try to explore how is learning taking place in the schools of
developed countries.
