SURAH AL-HIJR (THE ROCKY TRACT)
MECCAN PERIOD
Division: 196
1Alif/1, Lam/20, Ra/200.218 These are the Ayat of the Scripture and a
clear/explanatory Qur’an.
2Time to time those infidels; those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah
and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] will
wish “If only We became Muslims”.
12Thus We impose the Qur’an into the hearts of the sinners.219
3Let them eat, enjoy and be distracted by false hope. But they shall know soon.
4And we did not change/destroy a land without a known scripture.
5No community can advance its term nor delay it.
6,7And they said: “O you, upon whom the Admonition/the Qur’an has been
sent! Surely, you are possessed/a madman. If you are among those who are
righteous, you should have come upon us with angels”.
8We send down those natural forces only with the truth. Then they would not
be among those who have been given respite.
9No doubt that We have sent down that Admonition/Qur’an. and surely, We are
the protectors of it.220
10And surely, We sent messengers to the ancients before you.
11And when a messenger came to them, they ridiculed him.
13They do not believe the Scripture/the Messenger that is sent to them, but Our
law/what We did to ancients has been conveyed and informed to you.
14,15And even if We open a door upon them to the Heavens and they ascend up
to there, they will indeed say: “Our eyes have been dazzled/our sight has been
blurred. Truly, we are a possessed people”.
(54/15; Al-Hijr/1-15)

2. 2
16Surely, We created constellations in the Heavens and adorned them for the
beholders.
17,18And We protected the space from all thinking except for those who heed to
Our revelations, even if just a tad, and those who were followed by a column of
fire/those who travel into the space in rockets.221
19And We spread the Earth and placed stakes/mountains, standing firm. And
We grew plants from all things that are measured.
20And We created means of living on the Earth for you and for those for whom
you do not provide sustenance/And We created certain means of living and the
people for whom you do not provide sustenance.
21And the treasures of all things are only with Us. And We send them down
only by a certain measure.
22And We sent the winds as grafters and send down a water from the Heavens
and watered you with it. You are not the ones who hold the water in reservations/in
treasures.
23And only We resurrect and only We kill! And We are the inheritors.
24And surely, We know which of you who hasten to proceed and surely, We
know which of you lag behind.
25And surely, your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]
is the One Who will gather them all. Surely, He is the Best Law-Maker, the One
Who Precludes Corruption the Best/the One Who Makes Incorruptible the Best, He
is the Best Knowing.
(54/15; Al-Hijr/16-25)
Division: 198
26,27And surely, We created man from the clay that is seen, known and that
sounds, from malleable mud/a substance that is capable of many forms. And We had
created jinn; the unseen creatures222 from the fire of a burning breeze that can pass
through the narrowest hole/from the energy that knows no boundaries.
(54/15; Al-Hijr/26-27)
Division: 199
3. 3
28,29And your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] once
said to the forces of the universe: “I will create the mankind from dry clay,
formed/processed mud. And when I form him and give him the knowledge,223 you
will prostrate as the surrenderers”.
30,31Then all angels/forces of the universe but Iblis/thinking ability surrendered
and prostrated. He refused to be among those who prostrated and did not prostrate.
32Allah said: “O Iblis! What is the matter with you that you do not join those
who surrender and prostrate?”.
33Iblis responded: “I have not been created to surrender and prostrate before a
man whom You have created from the dry clay, formed/processed mud”.
34,35Allah said: “Then get out of there! You are now repelled, doomed and
curse be upon you only until the Day of religion”.
36Iblis said: “O my Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]!
Let me be against You/give me respite until the day they shall resurrect!”.
37,38Allah said: “Then you will be against Me/given respite until the time that is
known”.
39,40Iblis said: “O my Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer]! Because of the reason You have made me provoke men, I will adorn
them all on the earth and cause all of them to transgress!”.
41-44Allah said: “This is the righteous path that I assumed. You have no power
to compel over my servants except for those who follow you. Surely, promised to
them is Jahannah [Hell]. There are seven gates leading to there. For each of those
gates, a part of them is assigned”.224
(54/15; Al-Hijr/28-44)
Division: 200
45,46Surely, those who surrender themselves under the guardianship of Allah
will be in Jannah [Heaven/Paradise] and at springs: “Enter with peace and safely!”.
47And We removed the hatred from the hearts of those who surrender under the
guardianship of Allah. They shall rest on sofas, facing each other.
48Fatigue will not touch them in Jannah [Heaven/Paradise]. And they shall not
be evacuated.
4. 4
(54/15; Al-Hijr/45,48)

49,50Tell my servants that I am the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful, but
My wrath is painful and severe!
51And narrate to my servants the story of the guests of Abraham.225
52When the guests of Abraham had entered unto the presence of Abraham and
said: “Salam!”. Abraham said: “Surely, we are afraid of you”.
53The guests of Abraham said: “Do not fear! Surely we hereby give you the
good tidings of a wise son”.
54Abraham said: “Do you give the good tidings when I am old? Then, you give
the good tidings relying onto what?”.
55The guests of Abraham said: “We truly give you the good tidings. Be not
among those who despair!”.
56Abraham said: “Who loses his hopes on the mercy of my Rabb [the Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] other than the sinners?”.
57Abraham said: “O the messengers sent down to me! What is your affair?”.
58-60The messengers said: “Surely, we have been sent to the sinner people.
Except the family of Lot”. -Surely, We will save all his family but his wife. We have
set it up. Surely, she is among those left behind/who look back.-
61,62And when the messengers came to the family of Lot, Lot said: “You truly
are a strange people whose identity is blurred”.
63-65The messengers said: “Quite contrary, we have brought you that which
they doubt about. And we have brought you the truth and we surely are the righteous
ones. Now, set out your family in the middle of the night, and follow them. And let
none of you loiter/ think about those who are left behind; proceed to the place you
are commanded”.
66And We fulfilled Our command upon Lot: “Surely, they shall be eradicated
by the morning”.
67And the people of the city came happily.
68,69Lot said: “They are indeed my guests, then do not disgrace me and
surrender yourselves under the guardianship of Allah and do not humiliate me!”.
5. 5
70They said: “Did we not forbid you from all universes; interaction with your
surroundings?”.
71Lot said: “Here are my daughters!226 If you are among those who do…”.
-72You have never seen such sinners who struggle in their passion for lust.-
73By the sunrise that horrible shriek seized them.
74Thuse did We turn them upside down and rained upon them stones made of
baked clay.
75Surely, there are evidence/signs in this for those who understand signs and
symbols; those who think and comprehend.
76And surely, ruins of the city where the people of Lot used to live is on a path.
77Surely, it is evidence/a sign for those who believe.
78,79The Companions of the Thicket227 were among those who do wrong; act
against their own good by associating others with Allah and We took Our revenge
upon them/established justice by seizing and punishing them. Both of them; the
people of the Thicket and Lot are on a clear path.
80Surely, the Companions of the Hijr denied Our messengers as well.
81And when We had given them Our evidence/signs they turned away. 82And
they carved houses in the mountains safely.
83,84Then that horrible shriek seized them by the morning too. Then their
earnings were no avail to them.
(54/15; Al-Hijr/49-84)
Division: 202
85And We created the Heavens, the Earth and all that lies between with the
truth and that Qiyamat [the Day of Resurrection] will surely come. Now, overlook
and treat well.
86Surely, your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is the
One Who creates with the truth and He is the Most Knowing.
87Surely, We have given you Our blessings in abundance and the great Qur’an.
6. 6
88,89Never covet upon what We bestowed to them; wealth and fortune. Do not
sadden yourself for them either… Lower your wings for those who believe. And say:
“Surely, I am a clear warner”.228
94-96Now, convey what you are commanded and keep away from those who
associate others with Allah. Surely, We are sufficient for you against those who
adopt other deities along with Allah; those who ridicule. They shall know soon.
97Surely, We know that you heart strains at what they say.
98,99Then praise your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] and exonerate Him from all deficiencies and prostrate and worship your
Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] for “the knowledge/the
certain information” to come to you!229

219 12th Ayah of the Official Mushaf relocated to this position.
220 As can be clearly understood from the Ayah, our Rabb [the Lord, the Nurturer, the
Cherisher, the Sustainer] has assumed the protection of the Qur’an and He will protect it and will not
let it be spoiled. But, our Rabb [the Lord, the Nurturer, the Cherisher, the Sustainer] will not protect
the Qur’an by breaking wrists and ankles of those who try to alter it nor blinding them, … taking their
lives nor keeping the Qur’an in locked steel safe boxes. Protection of our Rabb [the Lord, the
Nurturer, the Cherisher, the Sustainer] will be as follows:
The Qur’an, a miracle in its literary and structural style and contents, was sent down Arabbian
[with the most perfect narrative style and grammatically accurate]. Therefore, any extraction, addition
of alteration would show itself up immediately, so to speak: A) Muslims formed the Qur’an in the
form of a book at the early periods; so early manuscripts and contemporary editions are the same. B)
From the first day forth, people have been reciting and memorizing the Qur’an easily thanks to the
harmonic nature of its literary style; therefore, in every period there always were thousands of hafiz
[anyone who has completely memorized the Qur’an] and the risk of corruption and alteration or being
lost was never a case for the Qur’an. C) As soon as it was first revealed, the Qur’an was started to be
recited and taught. Contrary to other religions, Islam does not sport a class of clerics, therefore
recitation and teaching of it has been accessible for all, for the rural and urban population alike; the
Qur’an has entered to every house with its many copies, and thus recited and taught by everyone. This
has led to a wide spread awareness and knowledge on the Qur’an and efforts of the ill-minded to
corrupt it has always failed. D) 610 A.D., the year the revelation of the Qur’an commenced, was a
period of enlightenment in comparison with the time periods during which other religions had been
revealed, and any and all incidents were recorded in a tactile form. Consequently, while some
historians deny the very existence of Moses and Jesus (P.B.U.T.), there is no such doubt about our
Prophet. Therefore, the sole miracle of our Prophet, the Qur’an, has survived to this day with such
records that eliminate all possible doubts. E) Islam did not emerge among mistreated, poor, weak and
miserable minorities, as in the time of Moses and Jesus (P.B.U.T.), but among those who were rich;
7. 7
those who had the authority and power; in the prosper, sovereign and free cities thus becoming the
religion of powerful communities.
221 The literal meaning of the phrases mentioned in the Ayah is as follows; “And We
protected the Heavens from all demons that are stoned. Except for the demons who steal ears, they
are clearly pursued by a column of fire”. In our interpretation, we have used the metaphorical
meaning thereof. For detailed information, see Tabyeen al-Qur’an.
