What does “Islam” mean?
The word الإسلام [Islam] is an infinitive word derived from س ل م [silm] root in if‘al pattern and used as noun and infinitive. The word silm means “release/keeping away; and to be distant from fear, doubt, trouble, lack of peace, unhappiness, fight, war, pain, suffering, material and spiritual inconveniences, weakness and decaying, and all the negativities.” This word is also the root of salim, selam, teslim, Islam etc. The word’s “Islam” form means “strengthening” [removal from problems, worries, fear, unhappiness, fights, wars, and similar negative things]. Hence, the religion Islam means the “the religion that strengthens humans [entire range of principles that protects and secures people by putting a distance between them and problems, worries, war, weakness, spiritual illness, unhappiness, and similar things].”

SURAH AL-QAMAR (THE MOON)
MECCAN PERIOD
Division: 60
1The hour/the moment of the Qiyamat has been brought close. And everything
has been disclosed.82
2Yet they turn away when they see evidence/sign and say: “It is nothing but an
ongoing sorcery”.
3-5But although the Qur’an is a command given to them, “a code, a doctrine and
a principle that is planned, sufficient at the Highest level, cast to preclude injustice
and chaos”, they denied the truth and followed their desires. Surely they had
received news that would make them give up. Nevertheless, the warnings do not
avail.
6-8Then do avoid them. On that day, on which the Caller will gather them for an
unknown/strange thing, they shall run out of their graves, with humbled look,
running fast towards that Caller. As if they are locusts scattered. Those infidels;
those who consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the
Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] will say: “This surely is a hard
day”.
9Before them, people of Noah denied the truth. Then, they denied Our servant
and said: He is possessed by secret forces/a madman”. And he was rebuked; all His
activities were forbidden.
10Then, Noah begged His Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer]: “I have been truly failed, so help me!”
11Then We opened the gates of the Heavens with a flooding water.
12And caused the earth bust out with springs; then waters met for a plotted
matter.
13,14As a reward for the one who had been denied, We carried Noah on a
boat/ship, which had boards that floated under Our protection/surveillance; woods
and nails/ropes.
15And surely, We left it as an Ayah [evidence/a sign]. So, is there anyone who
has taken the admonition and thought?
16Then, how severe My wrath and warnings are?
2. 2
17Surely, We made/prepared the Qur’an for easy thinking/admonition. Then, is
there anyone who has taken the admonition and thought?
18Ad denied too. Then, how severe My wrath and warnings are?
19,20Surely, on an ominous, long day, We sent upon them a freezing/screaming
wind that blew people away; they were like date-palm logs uprooted and thrown
away.
21Surely, We made/prepared the Qur’an for easy thinking/admonition. Then, is
there anyone who has taken the admonition and thought?
22Thamud denied the warnings too; they said: “24,25Really? A single man from
us will we follow? That would be a true perversion and madness; the Admonition;
the Book is revealed to him from among us? No! But he is a liar and arrogant”.
26Tommorrow will they know who is liar, who is arrogant. 27,28Surely, as a
duty, We will command them to establish social relief institutions83 and maintain
them.
So observe them and have patience. And let them know their duties; paying
Zakat/ tax and expenses, are allocated among them; how much each of them should
contribute to the community is predetermined as well.
29Then they called their companion/leader. Then he took all what he could and
drained all income resources that supported the social institutions thus collapsing the
system.
30Then, how severe My wrath and warnings are?
31Surely, We sent upon them a single horrifying sound; then they were like
stubble gathered by the one who pens the cattle.
32Surely, We made/prepared the Qur’an for easy thinking/admonition. Then, is
there anyone who takes admonition and thinks?
33People of Lot denied the warnings. 34,35We sent upon them a storm that
showered stones. Family of Lot was excluded. As a grace by Us, We woke them up
early in the morning; Thus We reward those who give thanks for the blessings given
to them.
36Truly, Lot warned them of Our seizure. But they doubted 37and surely they
tried to sexually harass His guests. Then We made them blind/eradicated their tribe,
lineage: “38Taste My wrath and warnings!”
3. 3
39And surely an abiding torment set upon them early in the morning: “Taste my
wrath and warnings!”
40 Surely, We made/prepared the Qur’an for easy thinking/admonition. Then, is
there anyone who take admonition and think?
41Surely, warners were sent to the family of the Pharaoh. 42They denied all Our
Ayat. So We seized them with the grip of one exalted in power.
43Are your infidels; those who deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He
is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer], are better than them?
Or is there a covenant or command by Allah in the scripture that states you will be
spared? 44Or they say: “We are a close people that help each other/can revenge”?
45Soon will those people be defeated and turn away and flee.
46Then that Hour is promised to them. That Hour is truly more grievous and
more bitter.
47Surely the criminals are in perversion and madness.
48On that day, they shall be dragged on the fire facedown: “Taste the touch of
the heat of Jahannah [Hell] that boils brains!”
(37/54; Al-Qamar/1-48)
Division: 61
49Surely, We created everything; yes everything in proportion and measure.
50And Our command is as momentary as the blink of an eye; it is instant.
51And surely, We devastated, demolished those who were like you. Then, is
there anyone who thinks?
52And every deed they have done is recorded. 53Minor and major, everything is
written down line by line.
54Surely, those who are under the guardianship of Allah will be in Jannah
[Heaven/Paradise), rivers/under the light. 55In the “place allocated for the righteous”
in the presence of the Most Potent Master, the Governor; in their place that is only
for the righteous, in which no lies can be uttered, a place that cannot perish.
(37/54; Al-Qamar/49-55)
4. 4
82 The “actual” meaning of the phrases mentioned in the Ayah is “the
Moon has/will be split”. We preferred the metaphorical meaning.
83 The term naqa, as originally mentioned in the Ayah, means “a she-
camel in its most productive age”. What actually meant here is the “social relief
institutions”. It is identical with the Qur’anic term salat. What actually meant with
the phrase its allocated water is the “zaqat and aids that sustain the social relief
institutions”. And the phrase killed by cutting its shins means that “they failed to
provide giving zaqat; fees, taxes and the aid they should have, thus precluding the
very existence of these institutions”. In our interpretation, we used the metaphorical
meaning.
