the name of their homeland in varied sectors
with success.

Sikkimese have excelled without any limitations.
Many stalwarts of the nation are from Sikkim.
7. 1. Baichung Bhutia –
He is often nicknamed the Sikkimese
Sniper because of his shooting skills in
football.
Born in a small village in Sikkim to
farmer parents, Baichung’s sheer talent
took him to the greatest of successes.
From being the second Indian footballer
to professionally play in Europe to wear
the captain’s jersey for the Indian football
team, he has done it all.
Three-time Indian Player of the Year I. M.
Vijayan described Bhutia as "God's gift
to Indian football".
9. 2. Danny Dangzongpa–
Danny Denzongpa was one of Hindi
cinema’s favorite villains of the 70s and
80s.
Born in Gangtok, Danny did his
schooling from the state capital.
Alumni of Film and Television Institute of
India (FTTI), he soon joined the film
industry.
Apart from being part of numerous Hindi
films, Danny also has to his credit the
famous international film “Seven Years in
Tibet”.
11. 3. Omi Gurung–
A reputed fashion designer, Omi Gurung was
born and brought up in Sikkim.
Before becoming a full-time designer, he worked
as a fashion editor.
He owns a very popular eco-friendly boutique
called Green Gangtok.
He is the youngest son of R.K. Gurung, former
Secretary, Department of Mines, Minerals &
Geology, Government of Sikkim and Beena
Gurung.
He was conferred with national award
"Karmaveer Chakra" instituted by United Nations
and iCongo on 26 November 2019, in an event
held at NCR, New Delhi
13. 4. Karma Paljor–
If you follow English news channels in
India, you would have definitely come
across Karma Paljor’s face.
He is a regular newsreader and journalist
for CNN-News 18.
He did his schooling from Tashi Namgyal
Academy in Gangtok.
Karma was awarded the reporter of the
year in 2010 by Indian Television at the
News Television Awards.
15. 5. Nirmal Chettri–
Date of birth: 21 October 1990 (age 30)
Full name: Nirmal Chettri
Height: 1.77 m (5 ft 10 in)
Born in Melli, Sikkim is an Indian footballer who
plays mainly as a defender for DSK Shivajians in
the I-League.
Nirmal is strong with both his feet and is versatile
to play in the defensive midfield or the centre
back position.
Chettri made his debut for East Bengal in the I-
League in 2008.
At the age of 10 Nirmal began his footballing
journey in the Namchi Sports Hostel. He was
quickly recognized as a talented youngster in the
‘ Search for More Bhaichung's’ campaign.
17. 6. Tarundeep Rai–
Born in Namchi, Sikkim, India is an Indian archer.
Tarundeep is a recipient of the Arjuna Award
(2005) for his achievements in archery.
Tarundeep made his debut in international
archery at the age of 19 years when he played at
the Asian Archery Championship 2003 held
at Yangon, Myanmar.
He was a member of the Indian archery team that
won the bronze medal at the 15th Asian
Games in Doha in 2006.
Tarundeep Rai became the first Indian to win an
individual men's silver medal in archery at
the 16th Asian Games on 24 November 2010
in Guangzhou, China.
19. 7.Gadul Singh Lama:
Gadul Singh Lama, commonly referred to as Sanu Lama,
is an Indian fiction writer, poet and translator of Nepali
literature.
An engineer by profession, he has published three short
story compilations and his stories have been translated
into English, Hindi, Urdu, Assamese and Oriya languages.
He is a receiver of Sahitya Akademi Award (1993), apart
from other awards.
The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest
civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2005, for his
contributions to literature.
21. 8. Keepu Tsering Lepcha :
Keepu Tsering Lepcha is an Indian social worker, educationist, former civil servant, and
The founder of the Human Development Foundation of Sikkim (HDFS), a non-
governmental group serving the socio-economically challenged people of Sikkim.
A former secretary of the Government of Sikkim, she has served as the project director in
the Rural Development Agency of the government.
She is a member of the PeaceWomen Across the global organization which was
shortlisted for the Nobel Peace Prize of 2005, and a recipient of the 2012 Real Heroes
Award of the Reliance Foundation and therefore the 2013 oldster Award of the CNN-IBN.
The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri,
in 2009, for her contributions to society.
