2. VIKRAM SARABHAI
early career:-
• Son of Sheth Ambalal Sarabhai, he came from the
famous Sarabhai family of India who were major
industrialists committed to the Indian
independence movement.
• Vikram Sarabhai married the classical dancer
Mrinalini in 1942. The couple had two children.
His daughter Mallika gained prominence as an
actress and activist, and his son Kartikeya
Sarabhai too became an active person in
science. During his lifetime, he
practiced Jainism and belonged to the Shrimal
Jain community of Ahmedabad.
3. EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
•After passing the intermediate Science examination from the Gujarat
College in Ahmedabad he went to England for his further studies. He
enrolled at the St. John’s College, University of Cambridge from where he
received the Tripos in Natural Sciences in 1940.
•After coming back to India he joined the Indian Institute of Science in
Bangalore to carry out research on cosmic rays. This was something he
undertook on the advice of the eminent scientist C.V. Raman. His first
scientific paper ‘Time Distribution of Cosmic Rays’ was published in 1942.
•He returned to Cambridge in 1945 to further his research on cosmic rays
and earned his Ph.D for his thesis ‘Cosmic ray investigations in tropical
latitudes’.
4. CAREER:-
•He returned to India when the country had newly become independent. Sensing the
need for better scientific facilities in the country, Sarabhai convinced the charitable
trusts his family managed to establish The Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in
Ahmedabad in November 1947.
•K.R. Ramanathan, an atmospheric scientist was the founder director of PRL and under
his able guidance the institution went on to become a leading research organization
dedicated to cosmic rays and space sciences.
•He was the founding director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad
which was the second IIM in the country. Along with businessman Kasturbhai Lalbhai
he played a key role in setting up the institute of learning in 1961.
•He was the driving force behind the setting up of the Centre for Environmental
Planning and Technology University (CEPT University) in Ahmedabad in 1962 which
offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in disciplines like architecture,
planning and technology.
•In 1965, he founded the Nehru Foundation for Development (NFD) which is dedicated
towards the promotion of basic study on the current problems of societal and individual
development.
5. Major Works:-
• Vikram Sarabhai is remembered as the Father of the Indian Space
Program for his contributions to the field of space science. He founded the
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) which eventually became the
largest government space agency in the world.
Awards & Achievements:-
• For his visionary work in the field of space science, this scientist was
decorated with two of India’s most honorable awards: the Padma
Bhushan (1966) and the Padma Vibhushan (awarded posthumously in
1972).

She began her career as a Lecturer in Political Science (1970–72) at Khalsa College

She served in a number of tough assignments ranging from New Delhi traffic
postings, Deputy Inspector General of Police in Mizoram, Advisor to the Lieutenant
Governor of Chandigarh, Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau
She is popularly referred to as Crane Bedi for towing the Prime Minister Indira
Gandhi's car for a parking violation, during the PM's tour of United States at the time
Kiran Bedi influenced several decisions of the Indian Police Service, particularly in the
areas of narcotics control, Traffic management, and VIP security
She was last appointed as Director General of India's Bureau of Police Research and
Development.
9. The Officer:-
• In May 2005, she was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Law in recognition
of her “humanitarian approach to prison reforms and policing
• On 27 November 2007, she expressed her wish to voluntarily retire from the police
force to undertake new challenges in life
• On 25 December 2007, the Government of India agreed to relieve Bedi of her
duties as Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development.
• Kiran Bedi along with 17 other police officers set up Navjyoti India Foundation (NIF)
in 1987
• In 1994 Bedi setup India Vision Foundation which works in field of police reforms,
prison reforms, women empowerment and rural and community development

15. Dhirubhai Ambani
Early Life:-
• Dihrubhai Ambani was born in a Modh baniya family to Hirachand
Govardhandas Ambani and Jamanaben in the village of Chorwad in the
district of Junagarh. His father was employed as a school teacher while
his mother was a homemaker.
• While at school at Junagarh, he was elected as the General Secretary of
the Junagarh State Union. He organized a rally on Indian Independence
Day, defying the rules of the Nawab, head of the state.
16. Major Works:-

He was the mastermind, the initiator, conceptualizer and the visualizer
behind Reliance Group. Starting off as a mere yarn dealer, he wrote history
by establishing Reliance Industries at grassroot level and making it the
largest business conglomerate in India.
• Dhirubhai revolutionized the way capital market functioned by drawing
large amount of retail investors in a market till then dominated by financial
institutions. He shaped the 'equity culture' in India and generated billions
of rupees in wealth for those who put their trust in his companies
• Reliance was the first Indian company to feature in Forbes 500 list.
17. Awards & Achievements
• For his excellent business acumen and never-say-die spirit which made
Reliance one of the topmost business empires in the country and the
world, he was conferred with numerous honors including Dean’s Medal,
Lifetime Achievement Award for Corporate Excellence and Man of the
Century award. Additionally, he was named ‘Man of 20th Century’ by the
Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
• Posthumously, he was conferred with the ABLF Global Asian Award at the
Asian Business Leadership Forum Awards.
