3. ORGANIC FARMING IN SIKKIM
Sikkim is the first state in
the world that is 100%
organic: All of its farmland
is certified organic. The
policy implemented a
phase-out of chemical
fertilizers and pesticides,
and achieved a total ban
on sale and use of
chemical pesticides in the
state. The transition has
benefitted more than
66,000 farming families.
6. Sikkim has approximately 5,000 blossoming plants,
515 extraordinary orchids, 60 primula species, 36
rhododendron species, 11 oak varieties, 23 bamboo
varieties, 16 conifer species, 362 types of ferns &
ferns' allies, 8 tree ferns and more than 424
medicinal plants. The Rhododendron is acclaimed to
be the state tree. Sikkim boasts of a wide range of
the species that grows in sub-tropical to alpine
regions. In the lower altitudes, orchids, figs, laurel,
bananas, sal trees and bamboo are traceable
enjoying the subtropical climate. Above 1,500 meters
(in temperate regions), oaks, chestnuts, maples,
birches, alders and magnolias are found in large
numbers. Under alpine-affected regions, juniper,
pine, firs, cypresses and rhododendrons are quite
common that happen to come across between the
altitudes of 3,500 to 5 000 m.

12. Birds at Pangolakha Wildlife
Sanctuary include kalij pheasant,
Oriental honey buzzard, blood
pheasant, white-crested
laughingthrush, striated
laughingthrush, chestnut-crowned
laughingthrush, bar-throated
minla, red-tailed minla,
white-browed shrike babbler,
white-browed fulvetta, rufous
sibia, whiskered yuhina,
stripe-throated yuhina,
rufous-vented yuhina, brown
dipper, rusty-flanked treecreeper,
dark-rumped rosefinch, little
bunting, etc. It is also home to
some rarities like the speckled
wood pigeon and bay woodpecker.
13. Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary is famous
for its varieties of both flora and fauna.
Located conveniently about 20 km from
Gangtok, Fambong Lho lies between
Singtam and Dikchu. The wildlife sanctuary
is also home to a variety of rare species of
plants and animals like red panda,
Himalayan bear, rhododendrons, barking
deer, yellow-throated marten, takin and
others. Tinjure is the sanctuary’s highest
point at 7,000 feet.
