Radiology Technologist have been around for almost a century. "Radiology Technologist works in
various places taking diagnostic imaging examinations for patients, which are x–rays, magnetic
resonance imaging, and mammography." (eHow) This job is one of the few in the world that can
give the risk of cancer to the rad–techs. And is stilled one of the most needed in the medical field.

Sadly, this means that the more taxes will be taken out of your check. The amount a tech gets paid is
determined on their degree and the amount of experience that the individual knows. The way an x–
ray tech gets paid, is just like any other job, can differ from one hospital or medical center to the
next. The time between the time periods could be weekly, every other week, or monthly. This all
depends on the employers' view of the work place.
Although there have been signs of leukemia, there is still uncertainty if that long hours of radiation
exposure has any effect on x–ray techs. (RSNA) Although I first believed that as an x–ray tech I
would be diagnosed with cancer or some other disease, I now know that there is only a slight
possibility that I will even be diagnosed. Even though getting zapped by some kind of radiation

In order to understand the positioning of a part, a radiographer must be able to identify all the bones
and be familiar with where the anatomy lays. The different projections (PA/AP, oblique, lateral, etc.)
help to demonstrate different structures of the bones. For all the projections in radiology, there are
certain positioning and centering guidelines for each one. There is angulation of a part or x–ray tube
in order to see a certain structure or to project a structure above or below the part of interest. There
are also certain degrees of rotation to open the joints of a bony structure or to prevent
superimposition of the anatomy of interest. Positioning is important in order to correctly see the
anatomy and to identify what is normal and what is not. If the positioning is not correct, it could
throw the anatomy off and what could potentially be there would not be in sight (like a fracture or
cyst for example), leading to the patient being undiagnosed and not getting the proper treatment. The

When previously confronted with the question, "why radiology," my first response was,
"because they are not accepting any applicants for the sonography program right now, too full!"

Smoother Transition In Radiology
The opportunity to work together with physicians from every field, care for patients of all ages and
be at the forefront of diagnosing a wide range of pathology from acute to chronic make radiology
the right fit for me.
Early in my third year I had the opportunity to spend a half day per week with a local radiologists in
a small hospital while on my Family Medicine clerkship. Among many interesting cases, I
remember one in particular. Mrs. P was in her second trimester and had undergone an ultrasound

In the remainder of my third year I came to further appreciate just how integral radiology is to
patient care. Whether it was quickly diagnosing appendicitis in the middle of the night, helping an
oncologist determine staging to guide therapy, or draining an abdominal abscess; radiology was

prefer magnetic resonance imaging or MRI scan. MRI is auseful imaging modality when I do my
initial assessment and plan of care. However, I am limited only to the records my patients bring
along during the rehabilitation to some extent, I need to request to the referring physician about their
diagnostic results. Regardless of the limitation, it is crucial to read the imaging results in order to
recognize the pathology related to signs and symptoms of the patient and assist in clinical decision

used to diagnose and stage myopathic conditions such polymyositis, DMD, and polio that will assist
in early detection of the disease and immediate medical care that will help delay the progression.
MRI provides an excellent demonstration of soft tissues and bone marrow. It allows multiplanar
views of anatomy to some extent 3‐D images possible. If it is necessary to look into muscle tissue

The term angulation when used in radiology refers to the direction and degree of the x–ray tube
when it is moved from its standard "start" position, which is always perpendicular to the to the IR in
the Bucky tray. There are countless projections that utilize tube angulation for various reasons.
Frequently, projections use angulation to avoid the superimposition of different anatomic structures.
The reason angulation is used is to cause a controlled or expected amount of shape distortion. Shape
distortion is altering the typical anatomic layout of a structure and usually involves the elongation or
foreshortening of a structure. The direction and degree of angulation directly influence the amount
of shape distortion seen on a radiograph. Alignment of the anatomical part can also affect the image.
Shape distortion is when an image appears either longer or shorter based on the way it is positioned
in relation to both the central ray and the image receptor; foreshortening is when the object appears
shorter than it is in reality, while elongation is when the object appears longer than it truly is. When
imaging a part, the long axis is intended to be placed perpendicularly to the central ray and parallel
to the image receptor. Distortion happens when either the part or the central ray/image receptor are
