5. Designed to support your work, develop your
professional skills and enable you to enhance your
well-being.
The ‘routes’ (Head of House, Head of Department
etc) are not compulsory - if you are in one of the
named roles and would prefer to attend another
session, this may be possible.
The expectation is four sessions across the year (or
three if you have attended an external course).

Using data for departmental improve-
ment
This session will look at data sets within the school and how
they can be used to improve classroom learning and the per-
formance of students.
Improving your department/House - de-
veloping staff the ‘Multipliers’ way.
This session explores the ideas behind Liz Wiseman’s books
and how they can be used to enhance your leadership skills
and the capacity of those around you.
It may be helpful to read Liz’s books before you attend:
• ‘Multipliers’ by Liz Foster with Greg McKeown
• ‘The Multiplier Effect’ by Liz Wiseman, Lois Allen & Elise Fos-
ter
iSams for HoDs/HoHs
Alan Wallwin will take you through the features of iSams that
are related to your role such as how you can track student
achievement in your department/House with a few clicks.

Effective report writing
Will Gunary will lead two sessions (one for new staff at the start
of term) on how the reporting system works and the best way to
communicate the progress of a student.
Assessment, marking and feedback
Led by Dragonfly Training, the session will share the latest re-
search, thinking and practice around assessment and feed-
back.
Managing your time more effectively
In line with the ‘working smarter’ agenda this year, Dragonfly
Training will provide tips and strategies to enable you to be
more productive and achieve more of a work/life balance.
Conducting investigations
Richard Thompson will go through what makes a robust investi-
gation and raise awareness of the issues to consider.
Leading and managing the House team
The session will support and develop pastoral leaders’ capacity
to lead their House. Ashley Clancy will deliver this session.
Effective strategies for engaging stu-
dents with SEND.
The Learning Support team will outline the issues and strate-
gies to help our students with SEND. It is recommended that at
least one member of each department attend.
Supervising the EPQ/HPQ
Richard Coupe will take you through the process of the re-
search project qualification and the best way to monitor and sup-
port students.
Getting the best out of our overseas
students
Dragonfly will provide a session on issues of cultural awareness
and how you can use certain strategies to support our overseas
students.
Observations and appraisals
A variety of colleagues will share their experience about what to
look for in lessons and how the appraisal system works.
Drugs awareness talk
This is a practical session for pastoral leaders and focuses on
providing knowledge and awareness of the challenges young

people face. The Drugs Squad from Berkhamsted/Hemel Hemp-
stead Police will provide a hands-on session so you can identify
the different types of substances.
Building productive relationships with
parents
Chris Nicholls, former Head of Boys, will lead this session on
the best strategies to use when confronted with an unhappy par-
ent on the phone/email/in person.
Effective Tutoring
Peter Northcroft will share his experience and effective strate-
gies on how you can enthuse and encourage students to reach
their potential.
Preparing to become a HoD
Dragonfly training will provide advice and tips on making the
move into middle leadership.
Preparing to become a HoH
This session will allow you to explore the key qualities/
experiences needed to secure a pastoral leadership role.
Effective revision strategies
Led by Annmarie Mcnaney, Deputy Head at Chesham Gram-
mar School, this session will look at what strategies work well
withstudents (especially the most able).
The coaching process (parts 1&2)
Building on the work started last year, these sessions will focus
on the practical elements on how you can use coaching strate-
gies to develop your department and enhance student learning.
Counselling techniques for HoHs
This will be a practical session aimed at pastoral leaders so
they can support students at difficult times.
Differentiation
Dragonfly Training will provide practical advice on how to en-
able learners on differing levels to succeed in your classroom.
Managing Stress
Filled with practical techniques, this session will provide you
with guidance to manage yourself when the pressure is on.

Helping students deal with stress
As exams approach, a major problem is dealing with student
stress. Practical techniques will be shared that can be used the
next day with our pupils.
Dealing with self-harm, body image &
eating disorders
An ever growing problem exacerbated by magazines and vari-
ous media, this session will help you identify when there are
problems and what you can do to support students.
Helping students with the UCAS per-
sonal statement
Practical help on what to do/look for when supporting tutees/
students.
Improving your professional skills by
using social media
This session will introduce you to the world of blogging and Twit-
ter as a way of developing your professional knowledge and the
wider opportunities it can create for you.

Reflecting on the process of teaching.
Research
Launched this year in conjunction with the Expansive Education
Network, the research bursary is offered to members of the
Common Room to conduct a piece of action research. Supervi-
sions will take place at the Institute of Education in London and
with the Vice-Principal.
Research outcomes will be shared at the TeachMeet at the end
of the year and published internally.
The bursary is for one academic year and is £750. The supervi-
sions at the Institute of Education and at school are provided for
no extra cost.

professional development.

We are very pleased to be able to offer executive coaching to a
small number of colleagues this academic year.
Cathy Hall will provide the coaching sessions. Cathy used to be
a former Head of Human Resources at CNN and has a wealth
of experience that will benefit colleagues.

The Teaching, Learning & Assessment
Conference, Berkhamsted
We hosted the first conference this year and it was a success.
All tickets were sold and workshops were provided by educa-
tors across the country (and also from Berkhamsted)! The
event next year will be held on Saturday 22nd March and entry
to the event will be covered by the CPD budget (spaces are lim-
ited).

cation Pedagogies at Apple.

This year’s event has ‘Multipliers’ as its theme and we are fortu-
nate to have Elise Foster, one of the authors of ‘The Multiplier
Effect’ opening the conference for us.
There will be a range of workshops covering whole school is-
sues and they are provided once again by teachers across the
country and from Berkhamsted.
Workshop leaders include:
