South Kalimantan Project Location / Description
• Located at Barito River Mouth, Banjarmasin
• Channel very shallow, with high siltation rate
• Channel difficult to navigate
Banjarmasin Requirement:
• Channel 15 km long; 100mtr wide; 6mtr deep
• Volume to be dredged: 6,000,000 cub mtr

Why dredge the Barito River Access
Design Considerations
Channel?
• Busiest water passage for commodity transportation in • Siltation
South Kalimantan – Estimated at 5,000,000m3 yr
• Many delays experienced by transport barges – 80% occurs during monsoon
• High unnecessary consumption of fuel – Coming from upstream channel
• Only access during high tide (depth < 3mtr at low tide) – Encroaching Western bank
• Only one-way traffic for 6-8 hrs/day
• In-efficient use of available transport capacity • Capacity of Channel
• Improve future throughput capacity – Before; some 40 million tonnes / year
– Desired capacity 120 million tonnes / year
Design Considerations Channel lay-out options
• Barge Sizes
– Barges upto 12,500 dwt
– Draft of barges upto 6.1 mtr
• Channel dimensions
– Base width of 100mtr allows two-way traffic flow
– Depth of -6.0mtr LAT allows vessels to navigate
channel in all tidal conditions

Design Considerations – Cross Section Results Capital Dredging
• A straight channel, allowing easier navigation
• Channel completed on time and within budget
• New two-lane channel will allow vessel access 24hrs
per day
• Larger vessels will be able to pass through channel
• First successful trial with barges before handover
Convoy with first barges on 15th Oct 2008
