A washing machine is a machine used to wash laundry such as clothes and sheets. Early washing machines included the scrub board invented in 1797 and the rotary washing machine patented by Hamilton Smith in 1858, as most households lacked running water. The first washing machine designed for convenient home use was built in 1874 by William Blackstone, while modern washers now use computer controlled systems to automatically adjust wash cycles for load size.
