What is layout and its importance
• An arrangement or a plan especially the
schematic arrangement of parts and areas
• It plays a significant role in patient perception
which have a positive role on its sale potential
Objectives
1. To attract a large number of patients
2. To increase the sale and decrease the selling
expenses
3. To have space reserve for stock, office and
resting place for employees
4. Proper enterence for goods
5. To minimize the movement of customers in
premises of drug store
Types of layout designs
1. Clerk or personal service
2. Self selection
3. Self service

• Exposure of products is less
• Prescribed drugs
• Maximum interaction between patients or
customers and pharmacy staff or pharmacist

• Consumer may see, handle and select items
• For nutritional suppliments , OTC, cosmetic and
contraseptive drugs

Minimum requirements for pharmacy
• Premises
The word pharmacy shall be displayed in white writing against green
background having min length of 5 feet and width of 2.5 feet
Premises of pharmacy should be separated from room for private use
Premises shall be built dry, well lit and ventilated and shall be of
sufficient dimensions to allow the good in stock especially drugs and
poisons to be kept in clearly visible and appropriate manner.
The area of the dispensing room should not be less than 6 sq meters
for each additional person
The height of the room should be at least 2.5 sq meters
The floor should be smooth and washable
Walls shall be tiles, plastered or oil painted so as to maintain smooth
durable and washable surface devoid of holes and cracks
The dispensing department shall be separated to prevent the entry of
public
Hospital pharmacy
• The department of hospital that deals with
procurement, storage , compounding ,
dispensing , manufacturing , testing , packaging
and distribution of drugs .
Location and layout of hosp pharmacy
• In hospital so that staff and patients could easily
approach it
• In multi storied building , on ground floor
• Manufacturing room should be adjacent to
pharmacy
• Out patient pharmacy should give pleasant
appearance and must have enough space for seating
of patients who have to wait for medicines
• Medicine stores should be connected adjacent to
pharmacy
Community Pharmacy
• A pharmacy that deals directly with patients in
local areas.
• It has responsibilities like compounding
,counseling ,checking and dispensing of
prescription drugs to patients with care accuracy
and legality
