  • 2. Emily Brontë  1818-1848  Grew up in empty moorlands of northern England  Father= clergyman  Mother = died when Emily was 3  Educated at home  Teacher for 6 months, resigned  Died of tuberculosis a year after publishing her only novel
  • 3. Emily Brontë’s writing  Created imaginary world in writing: Gondal  Setting for many of her best poems  Wrote a lot about her home landscape (moors)  Published a book of poetry with sisters  Emily’s 21 poems were considered the best  Wrote one novel  Wuthering Heights
  • 4. Thomas Hardy  1840-1928  Grew up in rural southwest England  Educated as child, never went to college  Thought about becoming a man of the church, but lost his religious faith  Worked for an architect  1st wife encouraged him to write
  • 5. Thomas Hardy’s Writing  Pessimistic view of life  Wrote about the difficulty people experience when trying to rise above their circumstances  Central theme: the struggle of man against the force that governs the world and causes him to suffer in life and love  Wrote tragic novels: Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure  Disturbed readers  Quit writing fiction, moved to poetry
