John Donne (1572-1631) was an English poet and cleric in the Church of England known for his Metaphysical poetry. He was born into a Catholic family in London and lost his father at a young age. Donne secretly married Anne More in 1601 against her family's wishes and they had 12 children together. His writing focused on themes of love and religion. He is considered a pioneer of Metaphysical poetry, known for its use of wit, paradoxes, and unusual metaphors to explore spiritual and philosophical ideas.
