Sample Questions  Pre- 1914 War Poetry
1. Compare two poems from the pre-1914 selection which tell of horrifying experiences in wartime. Which poem are you more impressed with and why? You may wish to consider: what each poem is about how words and phrases are used the horrifying situations described reasons why you have been impressed as well as any ideas of your own.
2. Read again A Wife in London by Thomas Hardy.This poem concentrates on a woman left behind at home during wartime and the effect that war has on her.Compare the poem with one other poem from the pre-1914 selection, which shows the effect of war on people other than soldiers.
3. In the poem The Battle of Blenheim, Robert Southey uses simple language to tell the story of the battle. Compare this poem with one other poem from the pre-1914 selection which also uses language in an interesting way. You may wish to consider: what each poem is about how words and phrases are used how the events and characters are made interesting As well as any ideas of your own.
4. Look again at War by Edgar Wallace. This poem concentrates on the tragic after-effects of battle. Compare this poem with one other poem from the pre-1914 selection which considers a different aspect of war. You should look closely at the language used
