21. Religious Trip at the City of Beautiful Lotus
As soon as the plane landed, we were charmed by the atmosphere and
the identity of Ubon Ratchathani. This is no exaggeration, for Ubon
Ratchathani is a city of a long history with the outstanding cultures and
architecture inherited from its long civilization and the prosperity of nature
from mountains, waterfalls to caves and cliffs.
A short while from the airport towards the inner city, you will see a
building of the architecture from the King Rama VI reign, standing tall,
Ubon Ratchathani National Museum, a single building with a beautiful roof
pattern of no gable, the unique style of that era.
After visiting the museum, walk out of the museum from the front,
you’d see the city park, Tung Sri Muang Park. There are four gates from
four directions to entry the park. This park is the spot of family gathering,
teenage, small kids and all ages activities from exercise to live music.
There is the Grand Holy Candle built for the celebration of the Royal Jubilee
inside of the park.
Despite the nicknames of the lotus kingdom and the city of two-shaded
river, Ubon Ratchathani is also known as the city of the wise men, for it is
the home of many respectable Buddhist monks. For a Buddhist tourist, a
trip here can be taken a religious trip and for others, Buddhist temples here
are, however very interesting historical significant places.
Such a temple as Wat Tung Sri Muang, an ancient temple located in
the middle of the inner city. The temple has three must see parts which are
the ancient Budhha image in the subduing mara position, the marvelous
wall paintings of historical Buddhist stories and the Tripitaka Hall above the
pond, this Tripitaka Hall’s architecture is the design mixture of Thai,
Burmese and Laotian art.
Further along there is Wat Phra That Nong Bua locals often talk of its
beauty. The place is nothing less than the words. An interesting architecture
here lies on the Phra That Chedi Sri Maha Bodhi Sang, an imitation of Bodh
Gaya Chedi, which shines more beautifully during the night.

Heavenly Plan for a Retirement
Dr. Nathnicha Poemthong-inPresident
of the Ministry of Defense Secretariat
Wives’ Association
039
Having moved to Bangkok for her husband’s
promotion (General Sathian Poemthong-In, the
current secretary of The Ministry of Defense) Dr.
Nathnicha Poemthong-in travels back and forth from
Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani for she must
administrate the housing development business,
luxurious resorts namely Warinburi Villa and Spa and
The Boutique Warinburi Hotel, Nathnicha Decorative
Plants and Flower Garden, all in Ubon Ratchathani.
And for she is also an honored part-time lecturer at
Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University.
Both her resorts have attracted and impressed a
number of local and foreign tourists with their
elegance. Dr. Poemthong-in said she dared to invest
for she had aimed the happiness of the residences as
her first priority, making them feel at home and long to
return plus, such elegance serves her taste.
Not only Ubon Ratchathani is a big city with all
kinds of facilities that has been the center of the south
region of the North-East for long, the travelling has
become even more convenient with the bus, the train
and the airplane.
It is also a Buddhist’s merit destination where
respectable monks live eg. Wat Nong Pah Pong, The
International Forest Monastery (Wat Pah Nanachat),
Wat Pah Yai and Wat Baan Na Muang. Being
religious both in Dharma study and practice, Dr.
Poemthong-in was inspired to build an all-in-one
meditation center as her retirement plan. She’d let
those interested to join learning Dharma at her center
free of charge. The center’s construction is almost
complete. It is called Prohmnivas Sassanasathan.
Dr. Nathnicha Poemthong-in gave us the words of
wisdom; the absolute truth no-one can escape, that is
death.
“As we are still breathing, never postpone to do
good, both in the thought and in the practice. Then as
soon as we are out of breathe our goodness will lead
us to a good and appreciative place. This cannot be
taken lightly, we must always be prepared”

The journey to the precious culture of the Lotus Kingdom
Admire the gorgeous silk and the handcrafted brassware
Brassware and bronze ware at Baan Pa Ao has been selected as a OTOP (One Tambon One
Product), the producing process is inherited from the ancestors for six generations and of over
200 years. The process is called Lost Wax Casting Process, the same method as bronze
molding in the ancient Ban Chiang of the Bronze Age. The making of the brassware isn’t the
mere uniqueness you may witness only at Baan Pa Ao community. The uniqueness also lies in
the design appearing over the rim of each small shinny ware. Each has a different flow and
pattern, inspired by nature which shows how the precious handcraft has developed along with
the agricultural lifestyle. The products of the wisdom are such as pocket bell, betel leaf roll case,
casket, water bowl and betel nut tube etc.
Less than five minutes from Baan Pa Ao brassware community, there’s a handmade silk
bags community sewing bags from the local hand woven silk. Here, they weave the silk with
amazingly beautiful patterns called glass balls, and they weave Kab Bua Silk with carp fish
pattern.
Then one may take a journey to witness the method of Kab Bua Silk hand weaving, the kind
of silk found only in Ubon Ratchathani. In the peaceful green space of over 790 acres of Baan
Yang Noy Promotion of Supplementry Occupations and Related Techniques Center is the
center of the local North-Eastern wisdom which also serves as a food treasury. It is
administrated by Lieutenant Veera Sinthuwongsanont. According to the center’s director,
Yureewan, the center provides experimental agricultural fields and gardens herbal plants,
organic plants, growing mulberry to keep the silk worm, producing silk with the Royal Thai Silk
standard. They have a brown rice and grain recipe which enhances the antibiotics.
There is a silk exhibition hall acknowledging on Ubon Ratchathani’s own unique silk and
cotton called Kab Bua fabric, the term Bua or lotus has the same meaning to the city’s name,
‘Ubon’. Kab Bua Silk is woven with silk and Kab Bua Cotton is woven with cotton then both are
added at least two colors of jeans threads during the weaving to make a beautifully unique
pattern of streak. Both the Kab Bua Silk and the Kab Bua Cotton are very delicately woven and
so the textures are very fine. Wandee, one of the professional weavers working at the center
has won the award in hand weaving three years in a row. She was granted the award by H.R.H
Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. And of course, all of her weaver colleagues are just about
equally skillful.
There is another exhibition hall showing North-Eastern local hand woven fabrics. Moreover,
the center serves as a shopping center for the products by the members of all Promotion of
Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques Centers from all over the country.
A day journey in Ubon Ratchathani can give one the perspective on its precious culture,
how people have successfully preserved the culture for centuries. At the same time one would
find pleasure in witnessing the crafting process and may as well add some of their handcraft
products to one’s collection.
