Instructions: During this week you will build up seventy (70) points of tasks. These
tasks are completed using your choice of news articles from the pile provided.
Please complete each task in your English book.
You can choose which tasks you want to do. You don’t have to do every task.
You can only use each task a maximum of two (2) times.
You cannot use the same article for more than one task.
Read the whole article through before you begin the task.
Please write the title of the article and the author’s name at the top of each
task.
Points are only for completed tasks. An incomplete task gives you no points.
Task Points
Proper Nouns 5
Go through your article and list every single proper noun in the article. A
proper noun in a name of a person or a thing. For example Robert is a
proper noun and pencil is not.
Comprehension 15
Write and answer five comprehension articles from this article. Your
questions should demonstrate your understanding. A suitable question
might be “Who invented the traction kettle?”
Rhyme Time 5
Choose ten words from this article. Write them out the full sentence they
occur in. Underline your chosen word. On the next line write seven (7)
words which rhyme with your chosen word.
Summary 15
2. Write a two hundred (200) word summary of this article.
Letter to the Editor 15
Write a letter to the editor about the subject of this article. This letter
should be between 150 and 250 words long.
Write Me a Picture 10
Write a description of the image with your article. Write it as if you are
describing it to someone over the phone. Your description should be
between 150 and 250 words long.
3. Definitions 10
Choose ten words from the article that are between five and ten letter long.
List these words and then write your definition for each one. Choose
another five words you do not know the meaning of and list them. Check
with another student and get definitions for these if you can.
Verbs 10
List every single verb that appears in this article
Direct Speech 10
List every piece of direct speech in this article. List the entire speech
quoted. Direct speech is a quotation of the exact words someone has said.
“Nothing more than muddy drains” is an example.
Colours 5
Look at the picture with your article and list every single colour that is used
in that image.
Poetry Time 15
Write a poem about the subject of this article. This poem will be more than
100 words and less than 1,000 words long.
Write a letter 10
Write a letter to a specific person mentioned in the article about the subject
of the article.
Radio Days 15
Write a version of this story to be read out on the radio. This should be
between 100 and 200 words long.
