1. Evaluation Question 2; How effective
is the combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
2. Font
The font that we used on our digipak we made sure we matched it to the colour on
our main characters coat which was a dark green. We were able to locate the colour of
the characters coat on the programme Paint and then make that the colour of the
font, so it wasn’t a guess it was the actual colour. We did this because we thought it
would look more effective and make it look more appealing to look at. The font that
we used was called Adobe Carlson Pro which was on the digipak and our finished
music video which features at the very beginning introducing the name of the song.
This made this look neat and showed that we had a reoccurring theme, so all of it
linked in with each other.
3. Images
The images that we have used on the website and the digipak are all from the music
video, which allows it all to link. We used the same images on both the website and
digipak because we thought that these specific images have signposted the key
moments in our music video. The images that we chose are outside, so it gives the
audience an idea that the video will involve travelling and it also links in with the band
name being ‘The shape of the earth’ because the pictures shows the setting.
4. Message to fans
We wrote a message to the bands fans which we put on the websites homepage and
inside the digipak. We thought this would link together both materials as it shows the
connection between the two and builds a relationship with the band and the audience.
Both messages are short but we thought it would be thoughtful to add that in
somewhere on both as it shows the band cares about their fans and wanted to get a
message across wherever they could.
5. Effects
The effects that we used on the digipak were
that the boxes that were around the font
were faded as we thought this linked in with
the music video being black and white at the
beginning. This helped to show the clear link
of transition and emotion throughout the
video. We used the faded effect instead of
black and white because we wanted to bring
attention to the digipak so this made sense
for it to be in colour. We also shows to do all
of the images in colour to show the majority
of the music video, the faded boxes only
indicate that the music video will be black and
white for a short amount of time. We felt this
acted as a clue to the audience of what was
going to happen in our music video.
6. Main character
Our main character is featured in the music video,
the website and the digipak. We put her pictures
on every thing we designed in order for the
audience to really know who she was and it allows
them to see her emotions through the pictures
and it shows how her mood changes throughout
the music video. Putting her pictures on the
website and the digipak from the music video
from ‘Alone in This’, it shows how they all link and
makes it certain that she is from that exact music
video and it creates more of a star image to the
audience. This was important to do as we used a
character and not the band. By using the main
characters pictures it promotes the song more by
advertising her on all three materials. It makes
that song easier to identify as they recognise the
main character.
7. Main character
The main characters pictures inside the digipak are showing her when she’s happy
which we thought would link with when you open up the digipak. The meaning of this
is that before you open up the digipak, the main character looks unhappy on the front,
but when you open up the digipak it shows her happiness, so her happiness is hiding
until she finds happiness within herself. This shows the progression of her mood
throughout the music video, which is her starting off being down to then travelling and
becoming more happy with her surrounding and the people that she meets.
8. Locations
All of the images that are featured on the website and digipak are from the music video
and majority of the pictures are the outside locations. This shows where our main
character has travelled and that she loves the outside as it makes her happy. The clips
are from the woods as it helped to show the audience before they had watched our
video that they knew it was going to be an outdoorsy travelling story. This was a
reoccurring theme in all of our designs because it really linked in with the band name
to which is The Shape Of The Earth. The images of the outside we started off with was
the one that was at the beginning of the video which shows the dullness of her first
travelling and then as the pictures progress it shows the sun and how her day has
become brighter. The picture that we used on the digipak were mainly when our
character is happy as we didn’t want it to be to depressing to look at and wanted it to
appeal to our audience.
9. Theme
On our website we made the whole shape of it as a circle, this was done intentionally
to fit in with the name of the band which is The Shape Of The Earth. Even though the
audience may not notice this when they look at it, it is very symbolic and we thought it
linked really well. To then carry on this we also added pictures of trees which links in
with the fact that there are trees on the earth, so this fits in with them being in the
circle. The digipak also links in with this as the cd holder part of it is a circle and we
decided to design this with trees to which in the same way links in with the name of the
band.
