World War I
1. 1
For the first time…
All men age 15 – 60 were
required to fight.
Women were needed to work
in factories to replace the
men.
Raw materials and other
supplies were rationed for
civilians and needed for the
army
3. 3
Germany’s “Breakthrough” attack ran into
The fresh, well supplied American Army
and failed.
The Allies were pushing Germany back
slowly. Trench warfare was failing.
In Austria-Hungary, the Emperor had died
and a new young emperor wanted to
withdraw his army from the war.
The Ottoman Empire had been defeated.
In Germany food, fuel and raw material
shortages were causing riots and protests
against the Kaiser and the war.

4. 4
With his army
retreating and a
revolution in Germany
occurring, the German

alternative but to ask
for peace.

5. 5
President Wilson had proposed
peace based on 14 points. These
were to provide a basis for a fair
and non-vengeful peace
agreement that would guarantee
that there would be no further
wars in Europe,
but
The French and British leaders
wanted to punish Germany so
harshly that it could never be a
threat again,
so
Clause 231 of the treaty forced
Germany to accept all blame for
the war. Wilson’s 14 points were
mostly ignored.

Financial
The cost of the war had been extremely high. Nations
were forced to borrow money to pay for the cost of the
war.
Germany was forced to pay an incredible amount of
Reparations to the Allies. $868 Billion (in today’s money).
Germany made their final payment in 2010
Money Spent Debt the Country owed
Germany – 212 Billion 305 Billion
France - 111 Billion 258 Billion
U.K. - 117 Billion 134 Billion
U.S.A. - 288 Billion 33 Billion
A/H - 114 Billion 107 Billion
Russia - 293 Billion 370 Billion – ( unpaid )
The large debts would have to be paid back. The Allies owed more than
$200 Billion to the United States. Where would they get the money from?

Physical
1918 – 1920 “The Spanish Flu”
A deadly strain of the flu virus broke out
in France in 1918.
The close proximity of soldiers aided in
spreading the virus.
When the war was over, returning
troops carried the virus around the
world.
500 million people contracted the virus.
100 million died.
(that was 3-5% of
the world’s pop.)
