3. KEY POINTS FOR BRITAIN
Lloyd George was the most satisfied of the peacemakers.
He wanted a moderate peace which would allow the European economy
to revive.
He persuaded Clemenceau to adopt a more moderate approach towards
Germany by offering him an Anglo/American guarantee against future
German aggression.
He promoted British interests by extending her colonies, adding 1.8
million square miles and 13 million people.
The British Empire was at its peak in 1919.
George was very happy when Germans sank their fleet at Scapa Flow,
because German naval threat was removed.
4. RETURN TO BRITAIN
Lloyd George felt that the Treaty punished Germany without destroying its
economy or ability to contributed to the future prosperity of Europe.
This was good for British businesses and reassuring for those who feared
the westward spread of communism.
In contrast to Clemenceau, Lloyd George returned from Paris in triumph
and the House of Commons voted to approve the treaty with an
overwhelming majority.
