In modern culture, societal views on individuality are vastly effecting the new generation of people.
Individualism, emphasizes the ability for one's morals to be independent from society. Many who
express individuals tend to dismiss the status–quo, as they recognize their self worth and the

Individualism is a core value of American culture. It has been influencing all the fields of society,
economics, politics and culture. It has played an immense and extensive effect to shape the character
and mindset of the American nation. In the colonial period of 1607 – 1776, these Europeans had

school, I worked three jobs, participated in many clubs, and band; but my highest accomplishment
was graduating eighth in my class as an honor student. My mother struggled to take care of four

Many people look at their government and how it affects them on a day to day basis but do not see
what it does to everyone at once. The government's total authority over a country can vary from
place to place, but they all make laws and rules that constrict their citizens in some way. Sometimes
those laws can either have positive or negative consequences, which is dependent on the
government's views on how to run the country. Those consequences lead the country into one of two
categories – individual or collective. The government sets boundaries for individualism because of

If we all work together to help people out we can get a lot of ideas put together and do a lot of good
for the group. In Canada we are a mostly collective country especially next to the states. We have
universal health care which widely helps out people who wouldn't otherwise be able to see a doctor

In 323 B.C., the Hellenic Humanistic civilization came to an end, and Hellenistic individualism was
born. Hellenistic individualism was everything that Hellenic Greece was not. This new time period
would be described as "Greekish" because it was not purely Greek in culture (Humanities, 83).
Before the Individualistic era began, the civilization was united in language, philosophy and
religion, having a strong historical impact that connected them. Hellenistic individualism was
created in a time of loneliness and isolation. When the polis were replaced, individualism emerged,
because people were searching for continuity, they were searching for identity through the
individual (Humanities, 91). I will be contrasting the different viewpoints from Hellenic Age and the

This training and rearing of children in individuality projects a great air of importance, however, it
places many Americans in a position of being lonely. The connotation of individuality in America is
that of being strong and confident yet many Americans struggle with loneliness because they have
been taught to do for themselves, think for themselves, and to stand on their own two feet. While I

Over the past 150 years American Individualism has been changed. People have started to feel this
sense of fear against one another, and even the government. The government are the individuals that
are suppose to protect our values, and make us feel safe. Privacy is no longer a guarantee, and it can

Society and Solitude written by Ralph Waldo Emerson states what society means to him. Emerson
states, " To be a member of society is to be a conformist, and this makes self reliance impossible."

to go with the normal. He states that society makes it hard to come up with your own ideas or
opinions. Emerson emphasizes that "It is so easy with the great to be great; so easy to come up with

Upon granting citizenship to all persons in the United states, the government created an
environment in which anyone can be a part of something greater. No longer would immigrants and
slaves be treated of lower value, or given less. This was an immense step in allowing workers to
